I was on Loose Women - I know the REAL reason ITV viewers are switching off and episodes are being slashed

Daily Mail02-07-2025
A former Loose Women panellist has revealed the real reason ITV viewers are switching off from the chat show and episodes are being slashed.
Carol McGiffin, 65, who featured on the show on and off from 2000 until 2023, said it is suffering because it is 'rubbish' - not because of competition with streaming.
She also blasted producers as being out of touch, casting influencers to try to bring in younger viewers which she said is 'ridiculous' and will not work.
Her comments come amid scheduling chaos at ITV, after it was announced in May both Loose Women and Lorraine would air only 30 weeks per year, not year-round.
Loose Women will also lose its live studio audience to save costs, MailOnline revealed last month - while Lorraine's run time was slashed from an hour to 30 minutes.
ITV will also axe more than 220 jobs - nearly half its daytime TV staff, who also work on Good Morning Britain and This Morning.
Speaking on Dan Wootton's Outspoken podcast, Carol said: 'They can stand there and say, "The reason that we're suffering is because of online TV. People don't watch TV anymore, they go online for news or entertainment or anything, or streaming services".
'Maybe it's just because it's rubbish and they just aren't very good at it anymore. They don't consider that.'
Carol took a break from Loose Women in 2013, featuring on the twelfth series of Celebrity Big Brother, before returning to the panel in 2018.
The broadcaster, who then made her second and final departure from the show in 2023, added: 'When I went back to Loose Women, I thought, "This is great, we might be able to make Loose Women great again."
'But it just proved completely impossible.'
Venturing the reason behind viewers changing channels, she continued: 'They really don't know what people want and they tell them what they want all the time and they give it to them and force it down their throats.
'That's probably why.'
Influencer GK Barry (pictured), 25, joined the chat show in 2024, making her the programme's youngest ever panellist since it began in 1999
Carol finished: 'A lot of young people never watch television.
'The fact that ITV thinks, "If we get all these young influencers on, everyone's going to start watching daytime TV", is just ridiculous.'
Love Island star Olivia Attwood, 34, who appeared on the ITV2 dating show in 2017, joined Loose Women as a regular panellist in 2023.
Influencer GK Barry, 25, joined the chat show in 2024, making her the programme's youngest ever panellist since it began in 1999.
Carol exited Loose Women in 2023 after a bizarre radio rant claiming the Covid pandemic was a World Health Organisation plot to take over every government, MailOnline revealed at the time.
She had announced in May that year she was leaving the lunchtime show, protesting ITV insisted she sign a contract with clauses that were 'totally unjust and unworkable'.
The Mail On Sunday then disclosed a free speech row was at the centre of her departure, after a backlash over her tirade in an interview on TNT talk radio.
Speaking about her dramatic exit, Carol told Women's Own magazine in December 2023: 'No, I don't miss Loose Women at all.
'My pronouns are P and Off. It's just very woke and I can't deal with the wokeness.
'That's not why I am not there. I am not there because of other stuff.'
She added she misses her co-stars but 'doesn't miss being on TV'.
MailOnline contacted ITV at the time for comment about this scathing attack.
A spokesperson previously said, about the contract issue: 'ITV will not comment on speculation around individual contracts.
'We understand Carol has decided to leave Loose Women and we wish her well.'
But Carol has not been the only Loose Women star to speak out on the cuts at ITV, with current panellists also weighing in.
Kaye Adams, 62, who has been a panellist on the daytime show since its inception, has revealed she has had 'sleepless nights' since the cuts were confirmed.
Nadia Sawalha (left, in her YouTube video speaking out on the cuts), 60, has also hit out at the dramatic changes, choking back tears earlier this year as she described scenes of 'shock and fear' in the ITV corridors
Speaking on her podcast, How To Be 60, early last month, Kaye revealed the cuts 'came out of the blue', adding her 'life's just imploded'.
She admitted even she does not know what will happen to her or her fellow panellists' jobs in the wake of the cuts.
Nadia Sawalha, 60, has also hit out at the dramatic changes, choking back tears earlier this year as she described scenes of 'shock and fear' in the ITV corridors.
One of the show's most popular presenters, also present from its first series, she also admitted even she does not know her fate on the show.
Nadia explained she is self-employed and 'could be let go tomorrow'.
Speaking alongside her husband Mark Adderley on the couple's YouTube channel she explained: 'Do you know what? At the moment, all of us on screen are in work and are proud of what we do.
'But behind the scenes, there are people that are really suffering and what you don't realise is when you attack the show, you attack them, because you never see all the army of people behind the scenes and how hard they work.'
Struggling to hold back her tears, Nadia added: 'So, to all my friends and colleagues behind the scenes who have just got a huge shock out of the blue: I'm so sorry.'
Sue Cleaver, 61, has similarly admitted 'we're all devastated' and 'people are struggling' amid the cuts 'affecting people's lives'.
The former Coronation Street star and regular panellist told The Express: 'We've been through it at Corrie as well and these are people's lives and I just feel very much for all the production and the crew because people are struggling.
'It's affecting young families and it's obviously been a pretty hard time for people to hear that.
'But, you know, we have to just embrace change, and we'll see what happens.'
Carol's remarks on the cuts come after she spoke out on other aspects of her time on the panel too - including ITV's exhausting dress code.
According to Carol, during her 23-year stint on the show, the Loose ladies were given some rules on what they could and could not wear while live to the nation.
Writing in her column for Best magazine last month, Carol said: 'We went from wearing our own clothes to being bought stuff to adhere to ludicrous wardrobe policies like "no arms on show"...
'Presumably because our ageing biceps were morphing into bingo wings which the (male) boss at the time had decided were offensive.
According to Carol (second left, with Loose Women co-stars in 2009), during her 23-year stint on the show, the Loose ladies were given some rules on what they could and could not wear while live to the nation
'Another female(!) boss once ordered all the women to wear high heels as well.
'I always loathed being "dressed" or "styled" as they preferred to call it.
'You always had to be coordinated up to the eyeballs in nice slacks, wrap dresses or boiler suits.'
She added: 'It used to make me shudder, nearly as much as the insane amount of waste on unimaginable amounts of clothes that had mostly only been worn once.'
The same column had also seen her previously explain her departure in May 2023: 'I haven't been on the show for two months now because I've had to step away from it.
'It was causing me too much stress, which was mostly down to a difficult contract issue I'd been challenging since January.
'The problem was, ITV were insisting, for the first time since I went back in 2018, that if I wanted to carry on doing the show, I would have to sign a contract that was totally unjust and unworkable for me, so I had to say no thanks.
'And I know it looks like I've thrown my toys out of the pram, but the whole saga was affecting my health.'

The family trio all looked in good spirits as they soaked up the sun together. 5 5 Taking to Instagram, Cruz shared a series of snaps including on the superyacht. He captioned the post: "Sorry I don't have more speedos pictures." He was joined in the snap by brother Romeo and While a third chimed in: "Lovely picture with your brother." It comes as eldest son Brooklyn, 26, and wife Nicola Peltz, 30, have reportedly been keeping their distance from his family, This originated after they failed to attend David's 50th birthday party earlier this year. The Sun revealed Brooklyn and Nicola were left "blindsided" after Romeo and Cruz seemingly blocked them on social media. It was initially thought that Brooklyn and Nicola had unfollowed his younger siblings but those close to the couple said this was not true. A friend said: 'Brooklyn had no idea about any of this until he read about it online. 'It's possible Romeo and Cruz blocked them, which would make it appear as no longer following the brothers 'They certainly didn't unfollow them or block them - they're as confused as anyone else. 'The first they heard about it was when it was being reported on.' The Beckham Family Feud April 2022: Brooklyn marries Nicola Peltz. Wedding Dress Controversy: Rumours begin circulating that there's tension between Nicola and Victoria Beckham after Nicola chooses not to wear a Victoria Beckham -designed wedding gown. Nicola later clarifies in August 2022 (and again in March 2023) that Victoria's atelier couldn't make the dress in time, but reports in May 2025 suggest Victoria actually changed her mind about making the dress. Post-Wedding (2022 onwards): Minimal interaction between Nicola and Victoria on social media, and noticeable absence of Nicola at key Beckham family events. May 2025: David Beckham's 50th Birthday Snub: Brooklyn and Nicola are notably absent from David Beckham's 50th birthday celebrations in London, despite being invited. Reports suggest their absence was due to Brooklyn not wanting to be in the same room as Kim Turnbull, the girlfriend of Romeo who had previously been reported to have been dating Brooklyn, who David allegedly opted to have at the party over Nicola. Rumours emerge of a falling out between Brooklyn and his younger brother Romeo, reportedly due to Romeo's new girlfriend, DJ Kim Turnbull, who allegedly had a past connection with Brooklyn. Reports surface that the Beckham parents are "hurt and disappointed" that Brooklyn is "playing no part in family life." Sources claim that tensions between Brooklyn and Nicola and his parents are "definitely not beyond repair." June 2025: Brooklyn and Nicola reportedly enlist a "crisis team" similar to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for "reputation management" due to the growing media scrutiny. Cruz Beckham posts cryptic lyrics on Instagram that some interpret as a swipe at Brooklyn. July 2025: Reports indicate David and Victoria are "desperate" to reconcile with Brooklyn. Brooklyn publicly wishes his sister Harper a happy 14th birthday on Instagram, tagging Nicola, which is seen as a potential "olive branch" and a rare public message to his family amid the rumored rift. Brooklyn UNFOLLOWS his brothers Romeo and Cruz just 24 hours after his birthday message to Harper. Nicola quickly follows suit and also ditches the Beckham bros from her Instagram following. Romeo and Cruz are now also no longer following Brooklyn. 5

Katie Taylor's dad CONFIRMS legendary daughter's relationship status after pics emerge of her wearing ‘wedding ring'

KATIE TAYLOR'S dad Pete has confirmed that the Irish boxing legend is married. In pics ahead of her trilogy bout against Amanda Serrano, the Wicklow fighter appeared to be wearing a ring on her left hand. 2 2 And during an appearance on the Anything Goes podcast with James English, her dad Pete confirmed that she had indeed tied the knot. He said: "Ever since the fight there with Katie, people are seeing the two of us back together, even some of the s*** you hear about that. "I was reading somewhere that Katie Taylor never got married because of her father, he wouldn't let her. "Katie's married, you know, and I'm thinking, 'where are you getting this s*** from?'" Dad and daughter reunited to work together in the lead-up to the 39-year-old's sensational trilogy win over Amanda Serrano on July 11. Pete had coached her during her amateur career, peaking with her winning an Olympic gold medal in London in 2012. However, they parted ways after Pete split from Katie's mum Bridget. Taylor controversially lost her title at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and turned pro later that year, and has been trained by Ross Enamait ever since. In an exclusive interview with the Irish Sun a week on from her victory over the Puerto Rican, Pete sought to dispel preconceptions concerning their relationship. He said: "We posted online that we were training together, but we were still very close. I was still over visiting her. "This is a media thing that me and Katie got back together for the fight. It's not true. "We've always been close, and we've been talking for the last five or six years. It was just that I didn't get involved in the training. "We were always talking boxing. That's just natural. When I call over to her, we go to the gym together. "She just asked me to help out in this camp, and that was it - but it wasn't that we rekindled this relationship. "We were close all the time. "People love these stories. I think they must have boring lives or something, because they're so interested in other people's lives. "I don't post anything about my own personal life on Instagram. Katie's the same, and then, when we put it up, you could say it went viral. "We've always been close. I was actually shocked that it went so viral, to tell you the truth."

Could Pep Guardiola's 'imminent' divorce 'hurt Man City'? Sources close to legendary boss say there is 'more urgency' to finalise split as start of season approaches

Pep Guardiola and his wife are set to divorce imminently, as fears grow that their split could hurt Manchester City. The details of the Spanish football manager's divorce from wife Cristina Serra are expected to be finalised within weeks and made official as early as next month, The Sun reports. The couple had hoped to keep their separation on friendly terms, but there is now 'more urgency' as their relationship seems to have deteriorated, sources said. Pep's relationship from estranged wife Cristina has reportedly moved from 'friendly to cordial' amid 'complicated negotiations'. Spanish journalists Laura Fa, who broke the story of their split said: 'The signing of this divorce is going to be imminent. Evidently their relationship sentimentally has come to an end.' And there are now fears his marriage troubles could overshadow the start of the new season, sources say. Daily Mail has approached Manchester City for comment. Pep, 54, and Cristina, 52, have been together for 30 years and got married in 2014. Cristina, who runs a fashion business, struggled to settle in Manchester and moved back to Spain five years ago. The couple reportedly agreed to go their separate ways in December shortly after he signed a new contract with the football club, with sources claiming that it was the last straw for Cristina. The estranged couple even hired the same lawyer to avoid a messy divorce. They both attended an Oasis concert in Heaton Park last month with their two children Maria, 24, and Marius, 22, but were not pictured together. The Manchester City's boss marriage troubles, which were first reported in January, also come during his worst slump as the club's manager. Pep has already said he will leave the club in 2027 after his contract runs out to 'focus on myself'. It was claimed back in April that the couple had been trying to give their marriage a second chance after Pep and his fashion entrepreneur wife spent three days together at their former Barcelona marital home over Easter. It was the second time since news of their shock split became public in January that the former Barcelona footballer had travelled to the Catalan capital and spent time with Cristina. Barcelona-based newspaper El Nacional said after the second reunion they were prepared to 'give each another chance' and claimed 'all was not lost in their marriage.' But the journalists who broke the story of their shock split have shot down the chances of a fresh start for Pep and Cristina after their decision to call time on their 30-year relationship. Lorena Vasquez, one of a duo of well-respected Spanish showbiz reporters who call themselves the Mamarazzis, went on a Spanish TV show in February to say they had launched divorce proceedings which were 'amicable' because they were using the same lawyer. She also linked the split again to the Man City manager's unexpected decision last November to renew his contract with the Premier League club until 2027.
