
Jayant Narlikar, renowned astrophysicist and Padma Vibhushan, dies at 87
Family members confirmed that he died peacefully in his sleep. He is survived by his three daughters. According to people aware of the developments in his family, the last rites are likely to be performed on Wednesday.
A pioneer in cosmology and the popularisation of science, Narlikar was instrumental in establishing key scientific institutions and nurturing generations of researchers.
Born on July 19, 1938, he spent his formative years at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus, where his father, Vishnu Vasudeva Narlikar, served as the Head of the Mathematics department. He later studied at Cambridge University, where he was awarded the Tyson Medal and recognised as a Wrangler for his outstanding performance in the Mathematical Tripos.

After returning to India, Narlikar joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in 1972 and led the Theoretical Astrophysics Group until 1989, during which the group gained international recognition.
In 1988, the University Grants Commission (UGC) entrusted him with the task of establishing the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) inside the Savitribai Phule Pune University campus in the city. As the founding director, he led IUCAA until his retirement in 2003. The centre has since become a globally respected hub for research and education in astronomy. He continued his association with IUCAA as Emeritus Professor.
Dr Narlikar received international acclaim for both his research and science outreach. In 2012, the Third World Academy of Sciences honoured him for creating a centre of excellence in science. Earlier, in 1996, UNESCO awarded him the Kalinga Prize for his contributions to popular science writing and communication.
He authored several science books and articles and was known for his engaging science fiction writing. He also reached audiences through television and radio programmes, making complex scientific concepts accessible to the public.
Among his many accolades, Narlikar was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1965 at the age of just 26.
He later received the Padma Vibhushan in 2004. In 2011, the Maharashtra government conferred on him the Maharashtra Bhushan, its highest civilian honour. His autobiography, written in Marathi, received the Sahitya Akademi award in 2014.
He was also selected to preside over the Marathi Sahitya Sammelan but was unable to attend the 2021 event in Nashik due to ill health.

Properly purified, bacteriophages are considered safe and are being used worldwide under 'compassionate use' protocols for stubborn infections. Clinical trials are under way in the UK, U.S., and Europe.

In 1947, at just 28 years old, he founded the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad. Sarabhai played a significant role in establishing major Indian institutions, including the ISRO in 1969 and the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), in collaboration with local industrialists. He also chaired the Atomic Energy Commission, succeeding his mentor, Dr. Homi Bhabha. Birth Of India's Space Dream After the launch of the Soviet Sputnik in 1957, Sarabhai advocated for a dedicated Indian space programme. We do not have the fantasy of competing with the economically advanced nations in the exploration of the moon or the planets or manned space-flight. With Dr. Bhabha's support, Sarabhai identified Thumba in Kerala as the site for India's first rocket launching station. On November 21, 1963, the first sounding rocket carrying a sodium vapour payload was launched. Through his engagement with NASA, Sarabhai also laid the groundwork for the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) in 1975-1976, a project that brought educational television to rural India. He also initiated the project for India's first satellite Aryabhata, which was launched from the Soviet Union in 1975. ISRO: From Vision To Reality Sarabhai's chairmanship of the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) in 1962 marked a new era. By 1969, INCOSPAR evolved into ISRO, India's premier space agency. Sarabhai's groundwork laid the path for India's later achievements: Indian National Satellite System (INSAT) Series in 1983, Chandrayaan-1 in 2008, Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) in 2014, Chandrayaan-3, and beyond. Academic Life Born in Ahmedabad on August 12, 1919, Sarabhai began his higher education at Cambridge, earning an undergraduate degree in physics and mathematics. He pursued his PhD under the guidance of Nobel laureate CV Raman at IISc, Bangalore. In 1942, he published his PhD work, 'Time Distribution of Cosmic Rays.' He passed away on December 30, 1971, at the age of 52. He was honoured with several awards, including, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (1962), Padma Bhushan (1966) and Padma Vibhushan (1972, posthumously).

IIT-BHU study validates fairness of Random Number Generators in online card games
IIT Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, has confirmed through an independent study that Random Number Generators (RNGs) used in online card games meet high statistical fairness by Dr Bhaskar Biswas, Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the research applied internationally accepted methodologies to evaluate the randomness and integrity of card shuffling non-Personally Identifiable Information gameplay data from RummyCulture, the study examined both 53-card and 106-card formats over a three-month TESTING USING DIEHARDER SUITE The team used the globally recognised 'Dieharder' statistical test suite, a benchmark for RNG quality, to assess thousands of card distribution tests evaluated multiple aspects of randomness, including uniformity, independence and findings showed that RNGs passed 97.34% of all Dieharder tests for 53-card games and 98.25% for 106-card games.P-value distributions were largely uniform in both cases, with only minimal clustering at the edges, which is consistent with theoretical expectations.'These results demonstrate a high level of statistical conformity and provide reassurance about the robustness of RNG implementations in digital card games,' said Dr Biswas. 'In games such as online rummy, the underlying randomness must be beyond reproach.'FIRST ACADEMIC VALIDATION OF REAL-WORLD RNG DATAThis is the first time in the skill-based Real Money Gaming and wider global gaming industry that an independent academic body has analysed actual gameplay RNG IIT-BHU team conducted multiple Dieharder tests, such as the Birthday Spacing Test, Bitstream and Rank Tests, Parking Lot and Minimum Distance Tests, and DNA and OPSO/OQSO results consistently confirmed no detectable bias or predictability in RNG AND INDUSTRY SIGNIFICANCEThe report highlights the regulatory importance of these findings.
