Refrain from holding pol events over next wk: HC
Kolkata: The
Calcutta High Court
on Thursday urged all political forums to refrain from holding any programme over the next week, "keeping the country's current situation in mind".
The HC observations came after the Centre on Thursday told it that due to
Army training
on a 'war-footing basis' at Brigade Parade Ground, they could not allow All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) to stage an
anti-Waqf demonstration
there on Saturday (April 26). The
AIMPLB
had moved the HC after their application was "not granted" by the Army commanding officer without specifying any reason.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh dismissed the Army's order on April 21 and directed them to cite a "reasoned communication" to the board "in respect of the reservations, if any, of the Army to grant permission for the meeting at Brigade Parade Ground... preferably within 24 hours". The judge asked the Board to apply afresh for permission on May 3 and the Army to reply.
Asked the reason for not granting permission, the additional-solicitor general (ASG), Ashoke Kumar Chakraborty, spoke about rioting in Murshidabad. "This (anti-Waqf protests) necessitated riots in Murshidabad and Malda. The other (Calcutta HC) division bench permitted the deployment of paramilitary forces without the state permission." he said. Asked for the reason for not granting the permission, the ASG admitted, "There is no reason, it's a simple rejection, based on the given situation and circumstance."

New Delhi Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Friday (June 6, 2025) launched the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) portal, a centralised digital platform for real-time uploading, verification, and monitoring of Waqf properties. The Minister said the portal will bring about a paradigm shift in administration of Waqf assets by introducing greater transparency, accountability, and public participation. 'The UMEED portal will add a new chapter in the history of Waqf property management and administration in India. It will not only bring transparency but will also help common Muslims, particularly women and children,' said Mr. Rijiju. Developed by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, the UMEED will feature a digital inventory with geo-tagging of all Waqf properties. Other key features include an online grievance redressal system for better responsiveness and integration with GIS mapping and other e-Governance tools, the Ministry said, adding the portal will also provide the public access to verified records and reports related to the Waqf. Terming the portal a historic step, Mr. Rijiju emphasised that the UMEED was more than just a technological upgrade. 'It is a symbol of the government's firm commitment to safeguarding the rights of minority communities and ensuring that community owned Waqf assets are utilised effectively and fairly, for poor Muslims, for whom it was originally meant,' he added. George Kurian, Minister of State for Minority Affairs, said that the portal was a long-awaited reform that will curb misuse and bring Waqf administration closer to the people. 'The system ensures that every property is accounted for and used in accordance with the purpose it was endowed,' he added. Chandra Shekhar Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry, said that he expected the UMEED portal to become the backbone of digital Waqf governance, thereby ensuring that Waqf assets contribute meaningfully to education, healthcare, livelihood generation and social welfare, especially for underprivileged sections within the Muslim community.

Chhattisgarh: Another senior Maoist carrying Rs 45 lakh bounty, killed in Bijapur encounter
RAIPUR Another senior Maoist rank cadre was killed in an encounter on Friday, that broke out in same area where a central committee member Sudhakar was neutralized on Thursday in forests of Bijapur district. The encounter was part of the same anti-Maoist operation underway since Wednesday being carried out by personnel from the state police's Special Task Force (STF) and District Reserve Guard (DRG) and CoBRA. Intermittent firing between security forces and the Maoist ultras took place the whole day and after the guns fell silent, security forces recovered body of Maoist Bhaskar, a 45-year-old, who carried cash bounty of Rs 25 lakh in Chhattisgarh and Rs 20 lakh in Telangana. Bhaskar was a Special Zonal Committee member of Telangana State Committee and was reportedly operating in the dense forests of Indravati National Park — a known Maoist stronghold. Speaking to TOI, Bastar range inspector general of police P Sundarraj said, 'As part of the ongoing anti-Naxal operation in the National Park area of Bijapur district, security forces have recovered the dead body of another male cadre. Preliminary identification indicates that the recovered body is that of Bhaskar alias Mailarapu Adellu, a member of the Telangana State Committee.' IG stated that an AK-47 rifle along with other explosives, weapons, and ammunition have been recovered from the encounter site. 'Bhaskar, a resident of Adilabad district in Telangana, was the Secretary of the Mancherial-Komarambheem (MKB) division of the CPI (Maoist) outfit,' IG said. In the same operation on June 5, security forces recovered body of Central Committee member Gautam alias Sudhakar along with an AK-47 rifle. The search operation in the area is still ongoing to trace other Maoist cadres in the nearby area. This action is entirely illegal and clearly constitutes contempt of court," the AIMPLB had said in its statement.
