Sarina Wiegman responds to Lucy Bronze's iconic celebration
The reigning European champions looked destined for an early exit when they trailed 2-0 at half-time following a lacklustre display.
Indeed, it wasn't until Bronze's header 11 minutes from the end that the Lionesses threatened the comeback that was completed 130 seconds later when Michelle Agyemang pounced to score her first tournament goal.
An absorbing, but ultimately goaless, period of extra time ensued before a dramatic penalty shootout which England victorious from by the skin of their teeth.
Astonishingly, only five of the 14 spot kicks taken were successfully converted as goalkeepers Hannah Hampton and her opposite number, Jennifer Falk, excelled themselves.
Bronze, who wore the armband after Leah Williamson limped off, led the way in sudden death, hammering her effort straight down the middle before retrieving the ball and slamming into the turf.

It was an astonishing show of emotion, reminiscent of Stuart Pearce's iconic outburst following his successful penalty conversion, six years on from a costly miss against West Germany, against Spain at Euro 96.
'Lucy Bronze is just one of a kind,' said a relieved Wiegman after the game. 'I have never ever seen anything like this before in my life.
'I'm a very lucky person that I've worked with so many incredible people, incredible football players.
'What she does and her mentality and how she does it, the penalty, the goal, that's not what defines her.

'What defines her is that resilience, that fight. I think the only way to get her off the pitch is in the wheelchair.' More Trending Why is EastEnders not on tonight? Latest news on today's episode
As the contest wore on and with the time in Zurich approaching midnight, the incredulous crowd wondering if anyone would score, Bronze limped up to the spot minutes after she had been on her back strapping her own thigh while England's physios were busy elsewhere.
Having seen a succession of weakly-hit penalties saved, Bronze removed the strapping before stepping up to slam her attempt home with unstoppable power.
'I just felt a little bit tight at the end of the game and I thought I just need to get through to make sure I can keep going, but I thought (the bandage) is going to hinder me in a penalty,' Bronze said.
'I didn't expect it to go to the sixth penalty, so I didn't take it off. And then it was my penalty, I thought 'I need to take this off because I'm going to absolutely smack it'.

Arsenal can offer Eberechi Eze dream shirt number after £34m deal that stung Mikel Arteta
Arsenal are targeting a move for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze and have an added incentive available to the England international if he does join the Gunners Arsenal will hope that the prospect of handing Eberechi Eze his ideal shirt number can help sweeten a possible move from Crystal Palace. The Gunners have made Eze their latest priority after finally signing striker Viktor Gyokeres for £63.7million to end the long-running transfer saga. Mikel Arteta has been eager to improve his squad after falling short in the title race once again last term. Arsenal have spent close to £200m so far on centre-midfield pair Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera and new striker Gyokeres. Eze has consistently dazzled throughout his time at Palace, ending last season with 25 goal contributions, including the winner in the club's first FA Cup triumph. The attacking midfielder has donned the No. 10 shirt for most of his career, a squad number that Arsenal have not used since Arteta allowed Emile Smith Rowe to join Fulham for £34million last summer. When previously asked if he was upset by Smith Rowe's departure, the Arsenal boss confessed: "A lot. When I had the talk with Emile, I really felt it. First of all because I have huge gratitude because he came into the team at a tough moment. 'I think he was the player that made our supporters and the team click, in a way. I don't know how to explain it but that was my feeling. Something changed when he came in the team. He created a different energy straight away. 'And I have a feeling like, 'argh', that I have not got the best out of him. Obviously a lot of things happened in that time. 'From my side it was really sad, because I know how those boys feel when they are in that building, how hard everyone works to get them close to the first team, so I feel a huge responsibility to give them the chance. And now, can they sustain this level and make us better? That is the idea." Mirror Football understands that the Gunners opened talks over a potential deal for Eze last month. The 27-year-old has a £68m release clause in his contract, but Arsenal are aiming for a move around the £60m mark. The club considered offering Reiss Nelson as part of a swap deal, but the midfielder is a target for Fulham. The vacant shirt number could appeal to Eze, who has been Palace's No. 10 since 2021 and also wore the same number in his last two seasons at QPR. Arsenal icons such as Paul Merson, Dennis Bergkamp and Mesut Ozil each donned the No. 10 shirt. However, Palace boss Oliver Glasner has insisted that his team cannot afford to sell their star players, amid interest in Eze and captain Marc Guehi. The club made a slow start to the summer window due to the dispute over which European competition they would be allowed to enter. "Even though all the players are still here, we haven't made the most of the transfer window so far," Glasner admitted to Austrian outlet Kronen Zeitung. "I was promised that we would be more active and bring in the new players earlier this year. "As of now, I have 17 outfield players. I hope we don't lose any more. If that happens and we get four new ones on deadline day like last year, another false start is possible."

Slovenian ace Sesko and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins formed the two man shortlist as United sought to give Ruben Amorim the firepower he craves. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Man Utd have launched an all-out bid to land Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko Credit: Rex But with Villa insistent that no deal for their England front man will be considered, United switched their sights and are now aiming to blow Newcastle out of the water to land the £70m-plus Sesko. United director of recruitment Christopher Vivell and negotiator Matt Hargreaves flew out to Germany in a bid to get the deal over the line, although the Old Trafford club will try to negotiate Leipzig's asking price down. Vivell was previously with the Red Bull group that owns Leipzig and Sesko's previous club Salzburg for seven years and knows the 6ft 5in striker, 22, well. In a recent interview in Germany, Vivell said: 'Benjamin Sesko is among the game's top young talents and has enormous potential to become a top player. He has all the qualities to do that. 'He's extremely quick, has a great jump on him and is strong in the air. Benjamin is a real goalscorer, who is mobile and technically strong. His abilities make him a special player with a special profile.' Sun Sport understands that Sesko, who was also on Arsenal's shortlist over the summer, would prefer to move to Old Trafford rather than Tyneside. That is despite the fact that Newcastle offer the prospect of Champions League football, while United have no European football at all this season. Toon boss Eddie Howe is also thought to be growing apprehensive about his prospects of landing Sesko, who has scored 39 goals over his two seasons in the Bundesliga, now that United are making their move. They are sticking to their £70m valuation and dismissed all attempts by Arsenal to bargain them down, leading to the Gunners eventually landing Viktor Gyokeres instead.

Man Utd make final Benjamin Sesko and Ollie Watkins decision as transfer 'accelerates'
Benjamin Sesko has moved above Ollie Watkins in Manchester United's pecking order as they look to add the RB Leipzig striker to their squad ahead of the new season Benjamin Sesko has moved to the top of Manchester United's wish-list as they look to add the striker to their ranks. The Red Devils have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, but Ruben Amorim is open to adding more firepower to his side following the club's dire 2024/25 campaign. The highly rated Sesko looks set to move on after Leipzig missed out on Champions League football. United will be absent from European football completely this season, but that is not thought to have put the Slovenian off. Sesko is reportedly favouring a move to Old Trafford over Newcastle, who are also in the market for a top forward, with Liverpool-linked Alexander Isak angling for a move away from Tyneside. According to The Athletic, Sesko is Man United's priority if they go for another striker this summer and they are said to have made 'informal' contact with Leipzig. The Red Devils are also admirers of Ollie Watkins, although Aston Villa have insisted the 29-year-old is not for sale. A move for Sesko looks more realistic, with United also favouring a player of potential over a proven quality like Watkins. United have been linked with Sesko in the past, but they balked at paying his previous club, RB Salzburg, around £2m in 2019. He will now cost many times more after emerging as one of the most promising strikers in Europe, scoring 39 goals in 87 appearances for Leipzig since his arrival in 2023. His current contract runs until 2029, having only signed a new deal last year. It reportedly came with an understanding that he would be allowed to depart if another club offered in the region of £69m to £78m. Untied's signings will need to be offset by some outgoings, with a number of players declaring their desire to leave the club. Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia were left out of the tour of the United States, with the so-called 'bomb squad' training at the club's Carrington complex. Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan. United's transfer dealings have been widely criticised in recent seasons but Amorim has said chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox would not be taken advantage of just to get rid of those surplus to requirements.
