Social media major Meta on Thursday apologised for inaccurate Kannada translation and claimed to have fixed the issue, after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah raised concerns over faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on its platforms.Raising concerns over the faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on Meta platforms such as Facebook and Instagram , Siddaramaiah said that it was leading to the distortion of facts and misleading users."We fixed an issue that briefly caused this inaccurate Kannada translation. We apologize that this happened," a Meta spokesperson said.Siddaramaiah said social media platforms must act responsibly, especially when dealing with official communication, and cautioned citizens to be aware that translations displayed on these platforms are often inaccurate."Faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on Meta platforms is distorting facts and misleading users. This is especially dangerous when it comes to official communication. My media advisor has formally written to Meta urging immediate correction," Siddaramaiah posted on 'X'."Social media platforms must act responsibly. I caution citizens to be aware that translations shown are often inaccurate. Such negligence by tech giants can harm public understanding and trust," he added.In an email sent to Meta on July 16, the chief minister's media advisor, K V Prabhakar, raised serious concerns on behalf of the CM regarding the automatic translation of Kannada content on Facebook and Instagram.The Karnataka government has asked Meta to temporarily suspend the auto-translation feature for Kannada content until translation accuracy is reliably improved.Machine translations are shown to users in various instances on Facebook and Instagram, including public biographical info and specific pieces of content.In the case of Kannada auto-translation, Meta's AI machine translation model provided a machine translation error which caused inaccurate Kannada translations in Facebook-- which the company claims to have been fixed now.

CM Siddaramaiah to Chief Secretary: Why state authority gave in to Centre at Metro event?
BENGALURU: In an assertion that has left the state's bureaucracy rattled, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reportedly pulled up Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh over the 'complete surrender' of the state's authority during the recent opening of the Yellow Line Metro, which was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on August 10. It is said that Siddaramaiah wanted to know how and why the reins of the prestigious event -- hosted and organised by the state government -- were allegedly handed over to the central team. 'Why was the control given to them, when we were the organisers and hosts,' the CM is said to have asked pointedly. Eyewitnesses described Rajneesh responding, saying she would 'check' the matter. 'This is not done. We organise a programme and allow someone else to take control,' Siddaramaiah is supposed to have said. Even at the Metro line inauguration, Siddaramaiah publicly reminded Modi that Karnataka's contribution to the Yellow Line project was nearly four times that of the Centre, stressing an oft-repeated point that the state has received a raw deal.

Karnataka government allocated Rs 96K crore for guarantees: CM Siddaramaiah
BENGALURU: Expressing concern over 10% of the rich holding 80% of the nation's wealth, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah here on Friday said the state government's ambitious five guarantee schemes were envisioned to bridge such disparity. In his Independence Day speech after hoisting the national flag on 79th Independence Day celebrations at Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground here, he said the state has allocated Rs 96,000 crore for Anna Bhagya, Shakti, Gruha Lakshmi, Gruha Jyothi and Yuva Nidhi schemes. 'United Nations General Assembly President Philemon Yang too has praised the schemes,' he said. 'To bridge the wealth gap, guarantees and other welfare programmes were introduced. The schemes have led to an increase in per capita income, and studies have indicated that women's workforce participation has increased by 23%,' he added. The state is spending Rs 1.12 lakh crore on welfare measures, including guarantees. 'Karnataka is 1st in per capita income, and in the past decade, it has achieved a growth of 101%. It is already India's IT capital, and it is now stepping forward to become the world's Capital of Innovation. The state attracts the second highest foreign direct investment in the country,' he pointed out. In all, 44,166 acres in 18 industrial areas have been declared special investment regions, and investors have expressed interest in bringing investments of Rs 10 lakh crore, he said. Rs 65,000 crore has been allocated to the education sector, while steps are being taken to bring a comprehensive State Education Policy, he said. He said, 'The Platform-based Gig Workers Bill which covers 5 lakh gig workers will be implemented. An insurance cover of Rs 4 lakh will be given to these workers.' He said, 'The state has made significant achievements in the services sector, which contributes 66.7% to our Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP).'
