Policy and tariff talks key to Thai economic recovery, says Thaksin

BANGKOK: Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has outlined Thailand's path to economic recovery, focusing on public policy and tariff negotiations. Thaksin told The Nation on May 30 that the government must urgently deliver key policies to the people in its remaining two years in office, particularly tackling drug abuse and improving the economy, with a focus on reducing the cost of living. Looking ahead to the second half of the this year, Thaksin stressed that the government needs to raise agricultural product prices as a way to directly support the public. However, he acknowledged that the government no longer has the capacity to offer extensive subsidies as it once did, due to high public debt levels and a steep household debt-to-gross domestic product ratio. It's essential that the government addresses the debt issues while simultaneously stimulating the economy, he said. Concerning the 157 billion baht or about US$4.8bil budget initially earmarked for a digital wallet scheme in the 2025 fiscal year, Thaksin explained that changes were now needed. This is largely due to complications arising from US tariffs, prompting the government to reallocate part of the funds to directly support affected citizens, while directing the remainder toward broader economic stimulus efforts. Thaksin reiterated that the digital wallet policy was still on the agenda but would be implemented once economic conditions improve. 'Whatever we promised the people must be delivered, be it the 20 baht flat fare electric train or the digital wallet. It may take time, but it must be done. It's like having a 100 baht debt and only 10 baht in hand – you still need to start paying it back bit by bit,' he said. Speaking about the current economic uncertainty driven by US tariff policies, Thaksin remarked that Thais must fundamentally change how they earn a living. He pointed out that Thailand is facing intense competition, particularly due to a surge of Chinese imports flooding the market and affecting multiple sectors. He noted that the government is currently investigating improperly imported Chinese products, many of which fail to meet quality standards. The illicit imports, he warned, threaten the survival of Thai businesses and must be addressed urgently. As for ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, Thaksin observed that progress may stall temporarily due to a US trade court ruling suspending a previous directive on tariffs by President Donald Trump. However, Thaksin expressed confidence that Trump could appeal the decision and eventually win. 'Therefore, trade talks must continue. Negotiations are happening on several levels, and the current conditions are starting to ease, giving Thailand more room to engage,' he said. When asked about his own involvement in the negotiations, Thaksin clarified that any assistance he offered would be limited to within Thailand, as he had requested permission to travel abroad but was denied. When asked about his greatest economic concern at present, Thaksin identified household debt as the most pressing issue. He noted that out of five million affected households, debt resolution had already been achieved for 500,000. He expressed confidence that resolving the debts of this initial group within the year would help ease the overall burden and allow the public to better adapt. Regarding proposals by members of parliament to write off debts for the poor, Thaksin dismissed the idea. He stated that such an approach would not be adopted. Instead, he said the government plans to use funds from the Financial Institutions Development Fund, along with mechanisms from state-owned specialised financial institutions, to manage and restructure household debt. Full debt forgiveness, he warned, could lead to moral hazard. Thaksin also emphasised the importance of ensuring policies truly reach the people. He pointed to the Interior Ministry as the key ministry responsible for this, but criticised it for not fully engaging at the grassroots level. With just two years remaining in the current government's term, he said it is crucial that the Interior Ministry steps up its efforts to serve the public effectively. — The Nation/ANN

Sabah Umno must accept reality

Published on: Thursday, June 05, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 05, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: Nizam said Umno still cannot accept the fact that within a coalition of political parties, the party with the highest number of seats has the priority to lead the coalition. TAWAU: Sabah Umno needs to accept the reality that it is no longer the political 'big brother' as it continues to lose support both nationally and in Sabah where the people are tired of the same old script, said Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Information Chief Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan. He said the current Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government has chosen to look forward by forging a strategic partnership with Pakatan Harapan (PH) to ensure post-GE15 stability and in preparation for the 17th State Election (PRN17). 'Ultimately, real power does not lie in the hands of any individual, party, or propaganda — but in the hands of the people… Let the people of Sabah judge who is truly working and who is merely acting,' he said, in a statement, Wednesday. The Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister said he read with interest the remarks by Kota Kinabalu Umno Division Chief and Umno Women's Exco member Musliati Moslimin, who claimed that Umno is not a 'political tool,' not a 'script filler' and not a 'buyer of false promises.' Ironically, he said, such statements come from a party with a long history of writing political scripts full of loopholes — including in Sabah. Nizam said during the 2020 Sabah state election, history clearly showed who actually violated agreements and moral principles when, just two days before nomination day, Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) had agreed to contest 27 seats. 'However, when the time came, they contested 41 seats, which was not only a breach of understanding but also caused confusion and early cracks in the coalition. 'If they want to talk about 'dignity' and 'betrayal,' Umno should first reflect on its own historical record,' he said. Nizam, also Apas Assemblyman, said Umno still cannot accept the fact that within a coalition of political parties, the party with the highest number of seats has the priority to lead the coalition. He said GRS, which Musliati labelled as a coalition of 'splinter parties,' managed to secure the highest number of seats and therefore had the right to choose the Sabah Chief Minister—something that is not a betrayal, but the foundation of real democracy. 'Even more surprising is that Musliati did not mention the 'Kinabalu Move' incident in January 2023, when several Umno leaders, including Datuk Bung Moktar Radin, were involved in an attempt to overthrow the existing government,' he said. According to him, the actions of Bung and several other Umno leaders not only threatened the State's stability but also gambled with the people's mandate. Therefore, he said, their removal from the State Cabinet and positions in agencies was the Chief Minister's prerogative in order to safeguard the State's stability and interests. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Oil settles 1pct lower after US data shows large builds in fuel stocks

Brent crude futures closed down 77 cents, or 1.2 per cent, at US$64.86 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate crude settled 56 cents, or 0.9 per cent lower at $62.85. US gasoline stocks swelled by 5.2 million barrels, the Energy Information Administration said. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected a rise of 600,000 barrels. Distillate stockpiles rose by 4.2 million barrels compared with expectations for a rise of 1 million barrels. Crude inventories dropped by 4.3 million barrels. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected a draw of 1 million barrels. "The report is in my view bearish, due to large builds in refined products," Giovanni Staunovo, an analyst with UBS. "There was a strong increase in refinery demand for crude, resulting in a large crude draw. But post-Memorial Day, the strong supply increase with weaker implied demand resulted in large refined product inventory increases," he added. Plans by OPEC+ producers to increase output by 411,000 barrels per day (bpd) in July were also weighing on investors. On Tuesday, both benchmarks climbed about 2 per cent to a two-week high, driven by worries about supply disruptions and expectations that OPEC member Iran would reject a US nuclear deal proposal key to easing sanctions. Russia posted a 35 per cent decline in May oil and gas revenue, which could make Moscow more resistant to further OPEC+ output hikes, as such moves weigh on crude prices. On Tuesday, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) cut its global growth forecast as the fallout from Trump's trade policies takes a bigger toll on the US economy, which would in turn impact oil demand. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are likely to speak this week, days after Trump accused China of violating a deal to roll back tariffs and trade curbs. US economic activity has declined and higher tariff rates have put upward pressure on costs and prices in the weeks since Federal Reserve policymakers last met to set interest rates, the central bank said in its latest snapshot of the economy. Geopolitical tensions continued to escalate. Russian President Vladimir Putin told Trump that he must respond to high-profile Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia's nuclear-capable bomber fleet and a deadly bridge bombing that Moscow blamed on Kyiv. "Overall, we see limited upside potential amid ongoing concerns about a supply glut and softening demand growth," analyst Ole Hansen at Saxo Bank said in a note. Meanwhile, production operations in Canada, some of which was shut-in due to wildfires, were restarting on Wednesday. Canadian Natural Resources said it has restarted its Jackfish 1 oil sands site in northern Alberta after determining wildfires in the region were a safe distance away. Wildfires in Canada had reduced the country's output by some 344,000 bpd, according to Reuters calculations on Tuesday.
