He said the reforms would also extend to tax fraud investigations, with new safeguards to prevent arbitrary arrests. Under the new policy, arrests during investigations would only occur in cases of sales tax fraud exceeding Rs50 million, and only after approval from a three-member Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) panel.
The opposition lawmakers; however, sharply criticised the budget, saying it lacked vision and heavily favoured the handful elite. They decried the increase in allocations to the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), which rose from Rs592 billion to Rs716 billion, arguing it came at the expense of education, whose allocation remains comparatively low.

The opposition also slammed what they termed a symbolic 10 percent salary raise for government employees and a seven percent hike in pensions for retired government employees. They noted the budget failed to increase the minimum wage, allegedly due to pressure from industrialists.
The Finance Ministry did announce some tax relief for salaried individuals, a promise previously made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. But opposition members ridiculed the tax relief for those earning above Rs1.2 million annually, calling it a 'cruel joke.'
At the outset of the session, Federal Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb laid four Statutory Regulatory Orders (SROs) before the House, issued under the Customs Act and Income Tax Ordinance. He confirmed to the speaker that he would conclude the budget debate on Monday.
Several lawmakers belonging to both opposition and treasury participated in the ongoing debate on the Finance Bill for 2025-26, voicing a wide range of concerns and suggestions.
Pakistan People's Party (PPP) MNA Nafeesa Shah called for greater support to the agriculture sector. Saba Talpur echoed this sentiment, urging the government to cut prices of seeds, fertilisers, and pesticides to support farmers.
Junaid Akbar Khan of PTI said the budget had nothing for the people and called attention to sacrifices made by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the war on terror.
Agha Rafiullah of PPP demanded that the government review proposed family pension reforms and remove limitations affecting spouses and disabled children.
Sahibzada Hamid Raza of SIC criticised the apparent neglect of health and education sectors in the budget.
Minister for Religious Affairs Muhammad Yousaf described the budget as balanced and praised the government's handling of Hajj arrangements, noting that over 115,000 Pakistani pilgrims participated this year. Saudi Arabia awarded Pakistan for its management, and planning for next year's pilgrimage has already begun, he added.
Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, Minister for the Board of Investment, said macroeconomic indicators were improving, with inflation falling and remittances rising. He urged all political parties to agree on a Charter of Economy to attract investors.
Minister for Public Affairs Rana Mubashir Iqbal said Rs250 billion had been allocated for Balochistan, including Rs100 billion for road infrastructure and further allocations for dams, agriculture, energy, education, and health.
Minister of State for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Kesoo Mal Kheal Das stressed that no new taxes had been imposed on agriculture and reaffirmed the government's commitment to completing the Sukkur-Karachi motorway.
Murtaza Mahmud lauded the government's steps toward economic stability, while Pullain Baloch called for tax relief for the public.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar reiterated Pakistan's stance against Israeli aggression – whether in Gaza, Lebanon, Iran, or elsewhere – stating that the country will continue to oppose and condemn such actions.
Other lawmakers who took part in the debate included Fayyaz Hussain, Azimuddin Zahid, Shaharyar Khan Mahar, Osama Sarwar, Noor Alam, Farah Naz and Zulfiqar Ali, Zahra Wadood.

PAF launches flood relief operation in GB, evacuates 75 stranded
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has evacuated 75 stranded individuals from Gilgit-Baltistan in a large-scale flood relief operation, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Wednesday. 'Demonstrating unwavering resolve amidst difficult weather conditions and rugged mountainous terrain, PAF C-130 aircraft airlifted 7 tons of dry rations, daily use eatables and life-saving medicines from PAF Base Nur Khan to Gilgit,' the ISPR said. It added that the consignment will be distributed in remote flood-affected valleys in coordination with National Disaster Management Authority. 'Over the coming days, PAF aircraft and ground teams will remain engaged in sustained relief operations, delivering food, medicines, shelter and medical aid to vulnerable communities.' The timely and determined response by PAF has brought renewed hope to flood-hit families in Gilgit-Baltistan, reaffirming the unflinching resolve of Pakistan Armed Forces to stand shoulder to shoulder with the nation in every hour of trial, added the ISPR. As heavy monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed an intensified and wide-reaching response to relief and rehabilitation efforts across the flood-affected area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The prime minister called for an uninterrupted electricity supply to the flood-stricken districts of KP for at least one week. He also instructed that all formalities related to the disbursement of financial aid to victims be completed without delay. NDMA officials told the meeting that more than 25,000 people have been rescued since the onset of flooding. A total of 411 medical camps have been established nationwide – 308 of them in KP alone. The Ministry of Finance informed the meeting that an additional Rs4 billion has been allocated to sustain ongoing rescue and relief operations. PM leads green push with 41m-tree plantation drive
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday launched the annual monsoon tree plantation campaign with the theme for the first week: "One Daughter — One Tree". As part of the campaign, 41 million new trees will be planted across the country over the next three months (Aug to Oct). "Tree plantation is an important national, environmental, and climatic duty. It is essential to instill a sense of responsibility about it among all citizens," the prime minister said while chairing a meeting to inaugurate the Annual Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign. He directed that all relevant authorities must ensure that the tree plantation campaign was not just a symbolic activity but was implemented effectively. "Tree plantation is a top priority for providing a healthy natural environment for future generations and for protecting against the destruction caused by climate change," he said. The premier assured that the federal government will extend all possible support to make the tree plantation campaign a success. He stressed that all provincial governments, social and religious leaders, as well as all segments of society, particularly students, must play a constructive and coordinated role in the tree plantation campaign. The prime minister gave special instructions that the growth and survival of the planted trees should be monitored using modern technology. "Tree plantation has positive impacts on human life and plays a key role in the protection and enhancement of invaluable natural resources, wildlife, and vegetation", the prime minister noted. He said combating the harmful effects of climate change and increasing forest cover was only possible through an integrated and comprehensive strategy. The PM also gave special directions to pay particular attention to tree plantation in AJK and G-B to mitigate the impacts of seasonal and flood-related disasters. Separately, the premier reaffirmed that the government's health sector team, polio workers, and all relevant institutions were determined to completely eradicate polio from the country.

Sun of justice will rise, says Imran
Former prime minister Imran Khan was allowed on Tuesday to meet his lawyer, Ali Bukhari, while his wife Bushra Bibi met her daughter and sister-in-law at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail where the couple is detained. However, Imran's three sisters — Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi — were denied access, prompting them to stage a protest late into the night at a local roadside restaurant. Police later cracked down and detained six PTI workers. However, it was later reported that police assured Imran's sisters they would be allowed to meet him today (Wednesday). Ali Bukhari, speaking to the media after the meeting outside the jail, said the PTI founder remains steadfast despite solitary confinement. Bukhari said six names had been submitted to authorities for permission to meet Imran but only he was allowed to meet the former premier. He also noted that his client has been denied access to newspapers and television, and was not even allowed to meet his wife. According to him, Imran insisted that "the sun of justice will rise" and urged supporters not to lose courage. Separately, Aleema Khan told reporters at the Police Factory checkpoint that warrants had been issued against her and she had not sought bail. "Our brother is inside; arrest us too," she said, adding that the authorities were not concerned about Pakistan or the PTI founder. She demanded answers about May 9, 2023 rioting incidents. "Bring the CCTV footage — were cameras not installed at such major institutions [attacked on that day]? Those who stole the footage are the ones who set the buildings on fire. "Why should we apologize? It is they who must apologize to the PTI founder. This injustice must end; the system cannot continue like this," she added. Meanwhile, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja also lashed out at the authorities, saying that court verdicts against PTI leaders in May 9 cases rested only on the testimony of two policemen who claimed to have entered Zaman Park wearing "invisibility caps". Speaking to the media near Adiala Jail, he said the PTI founder had been kept in solitary confinement for four weeks in defiance of an order of the Islamabad High Court. He called the cases part of a conspiracy to implicate the PTI founder, demanding transparent investigations. "On the basis of two policemen's testimony, parliamentarians are being handed ten-year sentences and their properties confiscated. Even the British during the freedom movement did not commit such excesses," Raja said. He revealed that Imran had directed the party not to contest by-elections on vacant seats. "Some leaders believe we should participate, but for us, his word is final. Without meeting him, further consultation is not possible," he added, noting that since March 25 family and lawyers have been denied meetings with the PTI founder.
