National Theatre taps Paul Mescal, Monica Barbaro, and Nicola Coughlan for new season
Paul Mescal, Letitia Wright, Monica Barbaro, and Nicola Coughlan are set to make their debuts at London's prestigious National Theatre, marking a major moment in their stage careers.
The announcement comes as part of new artistic director Indhu Rubasingham's fresh lineup of productions, emphasizing global talent and diverse storytelling.
Mescal will lead a repertory company at the Lyttelton Theatre in 2027, starring in A Whistle in the Dark and playing Biff in Death of a Salesman. Rubasingham highlighted that the Gladiator II star was selected not for his celebrity status, but for being "a proper theatre actor."
Monica Barbaro will join Lesley Manville and Aidan Turner in Les Liaisons Dangereuses, directed by Marianne Elliott. Meanwhile, Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan will headline The Playboy of the Western World from December 4. Black Panther actress Letitia Wright will star in The Story, a new play tackling racism and media culture.
Other major announcements include James McArdle, Clare Perkins, and Ukweli Roach starring in Bacchae, and Hiran Abeysekera leading a new Hamlet production in 2025. Rubasingham also announced partnerships with The Shed and the Brooklyn Academy of Music, aiming to take productions from London to international stages and schools.
The National Theatre's evolving mission, Rubasingham said, is to create "state-of-the-world" plays that resonate across cultures, signaling a shift towards a more global, inclusive future for British theatre.

Nicola Coughlan speaks up for Gaza
Actor Nicola Coughlan has publicly voiced her outrage over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, using her Instagram Stories to draw stark comparisons between media coverage of global tragedies. The Irish actor, known for her roles in Derry Girls and Bridgerton, posed a powerful question to her followers: "If the headline read: 14,000 British babies will starve to death without aid in the next 48 hours, would you stay completely silent?" She extended the same question to include American and Irish babies, challenging her audience to examine their silence in the face of unimaginable suffering. "If the answer is no," she continued, "ask yourself why and speak up now." Her post came in response to mounting warnings from humanitarian agencies, including a recent alert from UN humanitarian coordinator Tom Fletcher, who stated that 14,000 children in Gaza were at risk of starving to death unless aid was allowed in. In a follow-up IG Story, Coughlan made her stance clear: "I think it is deeply important that people speak up at this moment." She emphasised the universality of the right to life and safety for children, regardless of nationality, religion, or background: "No child, no matter where they are from, their religion, anything, should be starved to death by a government." Calling the starvation of children in Gaza the "most inhuman thing" she has ever witnessed, Coughlan ended her story with a direct plea: "Permanent ceasefire now." Prior to her recent IG Stories, Coughlan had already raised her voice for Gaza publicly at Canneseries last month. Reflecting on her activism, she said: "There is a factor of 'it's better if you say nothing' because our job is to entertain you." But for Coughlan, silence wasn't an option. "We are talking about right or wrong, about children being bombed in their beds. I wouldn't accept that anywhere in the world."

Netflix has officially renewed its hit period drama Bridgerton for Seasons 5 and 6, while also confirming that Season 4 will premiere in 2026. The announcement was made during the streaming giant's upfront presentation to advertisers, where a teaser from Season 4 was also revealed. Dear readers, there is certainly much to celebrate, indeed... — Bridgerton (@bridgerton) May 14, 2025 Season 4 will focus on Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson, and his romance with newcomer Sophie Baek, portrayed by Yerin Ha. In the clip, the two meet at a masquerade ball, setting the stage for what looks like a love-at-first-sight storyline. The Bridgerton series, produced by Shonda Rhimes and based on Julia Quinn's bestselling novels, is planned as an eight-season saga—each following one of the Bridgerton siblings' love stories. With this renewal, Netflix has now greenlit at least six of the planned eight seasons. Previous seasons have followed different Bridgerton siblings: Daphne (Season 1), Anthony (Season 2), and Colin (Season 3), with Season 3 released in two parts in 2024. The remaining Bridgerton siblings—Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth—are expected to take center stage in future seasons. The returning cast for Season 4 includes Jonathan Bailey, Nicola Coughlan, Claudia Jessie, Hannah Dodd, and Simone Ashley, among others. Julie Andrews continues her iconic role as the voice of Lady Whistledown. Bridgerton remains one of Netflix's most popular original series, blending romance, drama, and regency-era elegance with a diverse cast and global fanbase.
