Baram MP urges parents to ensure children complete tertiary education
MIRI (June 29): Parents must play a proactive role in ensuring their children complete their education up to tertiary level for a better future, said Baram MP Datuk Anyi Ngau.
He stressed that parents should not simply give in to their children's wishes if they choose to drop out of school, but instead guide and encourage them to stay the course.
'There were instances where I met parents who said their children no longer wanted to attend school, and they just followed what the children wanted.
'Parents must take the lead. They must ensure their children continue their studies and, if possible, go on to obtain a degree,' he said when officiating the Kenyah Lepo Aga Miri Association's (PKLA) Family Day at the Miri City Council field here yesterday.
Anyi pointed out that, unlike the past, there are now many educational opportunities made available by the government, especially the Sarawak government, including free tertiary education for Sarawakian students, which will start next year.
'Today's parents are in a much better position. There are more opportunities and awareness of the importance of education. It is up to us to make sure our children make the most of what is available,' he said.
He therefore called on all parents to seize the opportunities and encourage their children to pursue education to at least degree level.
At the same time, Anyi touched on the importance of community associations in safeguarding the welfare of their members, including supporting the educational pursuits of their children.
'In the past few weeks, I have attended programmes organised by various associations that gave incentives to children who performed well in school.
'I hope the PKLA can follow this example and consider giving incentives to outstanding students among its members as encouragement and motivation,' he said.
Regarding the family day event, Anyi described the programme as a good initiative to be held annually as it helps strengthen unity and solidarity among members.
'It is not only a platform to foster closer ties among members but also serves to bring together the wider Kenyah Lepo Aga community.
'The association should strive for consistency by making this an annual event to preserve our culture and collective spirit,' he said.
Anyi also commended the organising committee led by Long Selawan this year for successfully gathering members from four Lepo Aga villages — Long Jeeh, Long Selawan, Long Silat and Long Teran Kanan B — for the event.
Approximately 1,000 members attended the one-day programme.
During the event, Anyi announced a RM15,000 grant for the organising committee as a show of support for the annual gathering.
Among those present were organising chairman Boyce Ngau Anyi and PKLA chairman Cr Raymond Apoi. anyi ngau Kenyah Lepo Aga Miri Association's Family Day lead

Ex-Sabah minister Peter Anthony fails in review bid, remains in jail
PUTRAJAYA: Former Sabah infrastructure minister Datuk Peter Anthony's last-ditch attempt to overturn his forgery conviction failed after the Court of Appeal (CoA) today upheld his three-year jail sentence and RM50,000 fine. Peter, 54, will remain in Kajang Prison as his legal battle has come to an end after a CoA review panel, led by Datuk Azman Abdullah, ruled that there was no merit in his application. His status as the Melalap assemblyman now hangs in limbo pending the official announcement by the Sabah legislative assembly on the vacancy of the seat. Peter had filed a revision application challenging an earlier panel's decision to uphold the conviction and sentence handed down by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court in May 2022. A three-member CoA panel led by Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim had earlier ordered Peter to serve his sentence after dismissing his appeal against the Sessions Court ruling, which was upheld by the High Court in 2023. Azman, who sat with Datuk Noorin Badaruddin and Datuk Hayatul Akmal Aziz, said the court did not find any miscarriage of justice in the subject of contention — an Aug 9, 2018 police report lodged by the third prosecution witness, the late Mohd Shukor Mohd Din. Reading out the unanimous decision, Azman said the matter had been extensively submitted before the earlier CoA panel. "The absence of this issue in the broad grounds of judgment does not amount to a failure of justice, because it is clear that it had been fully commented on in the full judgment. "It is tough for us to assume that this issue was not considered just because it was not stated or commented on in the broad grounds by the earlier panel, as it was the main issue submitted during the appeal," he said. Azman said this was supported by the earlier panel's full grounds of judgment in which the matter was discussed in detail. "It is not the duty of this court to re-hear questions that involve the statements and facts that have already been decided. "We find there is no breach of natural justice as the applicant (Peter) was given the right to be heard. "We find no merit to this application. With this, the application is dismissed," he said. After the decision, Peter, dressed in a white shirt and black trousers, was brought out of the courtroom to be sent back to prison. During a short recess, he was seen speaking with family members and supporters in the public gallery. Lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla and Datuk Rosal Azimin Ahmad represented Peter, while the prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutors Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin and Haresh Prakash Somiah. Earlier, Haniff submitted that the absence of any mention of the fresh evidence - the police report - in the broad grounds meant the earlier panel had not considered it at all. "This is where we say there is a miscarriage of justice on the grounds that the applicant (Peter) was not given a right to be heard. "If the court agrees that there is a miscarriage of justice which warrants a review on the fresh evidence, then his conviction and sentence need to be annulled and there must be an order for a retrial at the Sessions Court," he said. In rebuttal, Wan Shaharuddin argued that Peter failed to meet the stipulated threshold, where limited and special circumstances must be shown, and that the application ought to be dismissed. He said the defence's complaint of a breach of natural justice was unfounded as the police report had been raised and addressed. "We put forth several exhibits, and dozens of paragraphs are about the police report. "The applicant was not stopped or barred from submitting about the police report.

Sanusi defends tariff hike to keep Sada profitable
ALOR STAR: Kedah's recent water tariff hike remains among the lowest nationwide, with the new rate of 81 sen for the first 20 cubic metres still well below other states, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor. He defended the six-sen increase as necessary to ensure Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada) stays profitable and can repay its debts. He added that Kedah was not the only state to seek higher rates, as 10 other state operators have also submitted applications. "Sada must record profits to pay off its debts. I want to ensure our business plan sustains loan repayments so the state continues to secure its rights," he said at the State Legislative Assembly today in response to a supplementary question from Bau Wong Bau Ek (Sidam–Pakatan Harapan). Sanusi said Sada's after-tax profits stood at RM12.1 million in 2010, rising until 2012 before dropping to RM22.9 million in 2013, RM21.2 million in 2014, RM13.1 million in 2015, RM6.1 million in 2016, and RM450,000 in 2017. By 2018, profits fell to RM31,000 before the utility recorded a RM36 million loss in 2019. He said operations were reformed after Perikatan Nasional took over the state government in 2020, with Sada turning around a RM149,000 profit that year. "Since then, Sada has remained profitable, with RM29.5 million in 2021, RM41.5 million in 2024, and this year's projection at RM80 million," he said. Sanusi also said executive powers over treated water rest with the Federal Government under the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), as provided for under Section 3 of the Water Services Industry Act 2006. "If SPAN finds that revenues cannot sustain debt repayments, it has the authority to take over. So when all state water operators applied for tariff adjustments, all of them have been approved. "This is happening nationwide, not only in Kedah," he said. He said water infrastructure in Kedah was being upgraded in stages, but delays or debt defaults could expose the state to risks. "If treated water supply is taken over by amending the Ninth Schedule of the Federal Constitution, the state would only retain raw water sources, canals and drains, while clean water supply would come under the Federal Government. "The state's sovereignty depends on its rights over water, land, forests and religion under the Sultan's patronage. If even water is taken away, we lose a vital part of that sovereignty. That is why we strive to repay water debts and maintain Sada as the operator," he said.
