Government mandates 4% housing reservation for people with disabilities
New Delhi [India], May 22 (ANI): Union Minister Manohar Lal on Thursday took a milestone decision to provide a reservation of 4% in the allotment of central government housing for the person with disabilities.
The decision was taken with an aim to reaffirm the commitment to equal opportunities for all citizens under the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs said in a release.
'In alignment with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, the Directorate of Estates has issued an Office Memorandum to ensure fair access to central government residential accommodations for persons with disabilities,' the release added.
According to the ministry, this initiative is a reflection of 'the government's dedication to the empowerment of every citizen and also strengthens the foundation of an inclusive and accessible India.'
Recently, the Supreme Court ruled that the eKYC (digital Know Your Customer) process must be made accessible to people with disabilities. A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan, while pronouncing a judgement on PIL pleas seeking directions to the government regarding problems faced by acid attack victims and blind or persons with low-vision in being able to complete the eKYC process, stated that the right to digital access is intrinsic to Right to Life under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.
Additionally, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is directed to issue guidelines to ensure that alternative, inclusive methods are available for verifying customer 'liveness' during Digital KYC or e-KYC processes, moving beyond methods like eye blinking, which may not be accessible to persons with disabilities.
Furthermore, the RBI must clarify that customer onboarding through video-based KYC (V-CIP) does not require eye blinking, making the process more inclusive.The directions also state that KYC templates and customer acquisition forms must be redesigned to record the type and percentage of disability, enabling institutions to provide accessible services or reasonable accommodations to customers with disabilities. GDP growth slows to 6.5% in 2024-'25, lowest since pandemic
India's real gross domestic product for the financial year 2024-'25 grew by 6.5%, showed a provisional estimate released by the Union government on Friday. This is the slowest growth rate since the Covid-19 pandemic year of 2020-'21, The Hindu reported. In the financial year 2023-'24, the country's real gross domestic product was 9.2%. The real GDP grew by 7.4% in the fourth quarter of 2024-'25, showed a report by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The growth between January and March was lower than the 8.4% expansion during the same period in the previous financial year. India's primary sector, which includes agriculture and related activities, grew by 4.4% in 2024-'25. This was higher than the 2.7% growth in the previous financial year. The private final consumption expenditure, a key indicator of demand, rose by 7.2% in FY25, up from 5.6% in the previous year. The economic growth data for the first quarter of the financial year 2025-'26 is expected to be released in August. India's gross domestic product had grown by 6.2% in the third quarter of 2024-'25, recovering from a seven-quarter low of 5.4% in the second quarter. The rebound was driven by strong performance in the services sector and higher government capital spending. In quarter one, the gross domestic growth was recorded at 6.7%. expected to cut the repo rate for the third time in a row to boost growth, Business Standard reported.

The surprise in the latest GDP figures is there are no surprises
The Indian economy escaped with a whole skin amid the ongoing trade and terror tensions. In FY25, the real GDP grew by 6.5%, while Q4 turned in 7.4%. The annual estimates are in line with both the RBI and the second advance estimates at 6.5%. Interestingly, Q4 growth numbers beat the consensus estimate of over 6.8%. The surprise in Friday's data dispatch is that there are no surprises with growth printing exactly as we've been warned all along. But growth projections for the current fiscal come with a large asterisk, thanks to global trade headwinds and terror tensions across the border. Even the government's monthly economic review revised the FY26 estimate downwards to 6.2% from 6.5% earlier. Moreover, last fiscal's economic activity wasn't broad-based either. On the expenditure side, while private consumption and investments held up well, government spending sank into the ground. Likewise, on the supply side, agriculture was back to its best behaviour, but economic harmony was shattered by the manufacturing sector that saw a whispering growth. The services sector fared well, but overall growth remains well below its potential. As a result, FY25 registered growth alright, but lacks the showbiz sparkle seen in FY24's 8.2% growth print. In short, be it the quarterly, annual, or sub-component growth patterns, India's growth story is increasingly resembling this summer season -- three fine days followed by a thunderstorm. And India needs exactly the opposite, or a stable economic weather, to emerge as the fourth-largest economy with a projected GDP of $4.19 trillion in FY26. According to the National Statistics Office's provisional estimates released Friday, in absolute numbers, the real GDP stood at Rs 187.97 lakh crore in FY25 as against Rs 176.51 lakh crore a year before, while real Gross Value Added (GVA) stood at Rs 171.87 lakh crore, registering a growth rate of 6.4%. Likewise, Q4 real GDP stood at Rs 51.35 lakh crore as against Rs 47.82 lakh crore in the corresponding period a year ago. The agriculture sector bounced to its feet with 4.4% growth in FY25 compared to 2.7% in FY24. The mining and quarrying sector too fared well clocking 4.6% growth as against 2.7%. However, it's the secondary sector comprising manufacturing, construction and electricity, and other utility services that tattooed a big warning sign. Its growth fell from 11.4% in FY24 to 6.1% in FY25. The biggest setback came from manufacturing, which seems to have lost its roar, turning in 4.5% in FY25, down from 12.3% in FY24. Likewise, electricity, gas, water supply and other utility services saw 5.9% growth compared to 8.9%. While official data noted that the construction sector saw a 'record' growth rate of 9.4% in FY25, that's lower than FY24's 10.4%. The good news, though, is the construction sector's growth rate in Q4 at 10.8% that holds promise. Similarly, the primary sector registered a 5% growth rate in Q4, FY25 as against a dismal 0.8% growth seen during Q4 of the previous financial year, raising hopes that we may be nearing the gateway to the sunlit uplands of growth and prosperity. Coming to the services sector, the headline growth rate declined to 7.2% in FY25 from 9% in FY24, confirming that households' discretionary spending remains rather limited. Within this, the public administration, defence and other Services' sector saw the highest sub-component growth at 8.9%, followed by financial, real estate and professional services' sector at 7.2%. Trade, hotels, and others turned in the lowest growth within the tertiary sector at 6.1%, lower than 7.5% in FY24. The services sector has the highest share of over 63% in GVA, and hence needs to pick up steam for growth to crack 7% and above. Meanwhile, private consumption saw a 7.2% growth rate compared to a 5.6% growth a year before. Its share remains at 56.6% of the GDP. Puzzlingly, government expenditure slowed to a crawl at 2.3% growth in FY25 as against 8.1% in FY24. Accordingly, its share fell from 9.5% to 9.1% of the GDP. Likewise, investments, the missing link in India's growth story, which sprang to life last fiscal, slowed down to 7.1%. This is despite a recent Ministry of Statistics survey, which showed a 66.3% rise in aggregate capex between FY22 and FY25, and new private investment announcements hitting Rs 14.4 lakh crore in Q4 FY25 -- the highest-ever recorded. Notably, Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran reminded India Inc that India needs eight million additional jobs every year. He reiterated that the government was shifting focus from public-led growth to private-sector-driven expansion and urged the industry to focus on a capital-intensive model. India's exports of goods and services hit an all-time high of $825 billion in FY25, growing by 6.01% over the previous year's $778.1 billion. This historic growth comes despite global trade headwinds. What's unsettling, though, is the growth prospects in the current fiscal given the uncertainty over tariffs and the trade deal with the US.

Shubham, according to eyewitness accounts shared with the family, stood in front of the attackers without fear and declared his identity – 'I am a Hindu." He was shot point-blank in the head. 'He took the first bullet, but saved many lives," said his father. 'His courage was not ordinary – it was heroic. His presence of mind gave others those crucial few seconds to run and survive," his father said. During his address in Kanpur later in the day, Prime Minister Modi referred to the incident and said, 'In the cowardly attack in Pahalgam, our son from Kanpur, Shubham Dwivedi, became a victim of brutality," the PM said. Since the attack, the family has made only one request to the government – that Shubham be officially recognised as a martyr. However, on his demand, Shubham's father said that he met the PM just to express his gratitude for 'Operation Sindoor'. 'It was not a suitable time to raise the demand," he said. Initially, the Dwivedi family had raised the demand that Shubham's sacrifice should be honoured, for the sake of every Indian who believes in dharma and courage. Alshanya has been inconsolable since the tragedy. In her tearful exchange with the Prime Minister, she too thanked the PM for his visit and said those responsible should be punished. Shubham was cremated with full state honours on April 24 in his native village, an event attended by Uttar Pradesh cabinet ministers Yogendra Upadhyay and Rakesh Sachan. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath later visited the Dwivedi home personally and promised 'every possible support" to the bereaved family. The attack in Pahalgam claimed 26 lives, including that of a Nepali tourist. The Dwivedis maintain that their son was targeted for his religious identity. 'This wasn't random violence," a family member explained. 'He was attacked because of his faith, and he embraced it even in his last breath.
