Yahoo26-02-2025

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Our Wednesday Primetime 585 Shining Star this week puts the spotlight on Elisa Bodin, a 15-year-old Sophomore at Hornell High School with an impressive resume.
Elisa, an elite competitive cheerleader, is also quite the leader when it comes to Hornell's Indoor Track Team, taking on the role of co-captain for the Sectional-winning 2024-2025 team. She won individually in the 1500m race, and helped her 4×800 relay team come out on top as well.
She's been running with the Hornell Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track and Field teams since 7th grade, winning Sectional patches for cross country, and qualifying to compete at the Cross Country New York State Championships the last two seasons.
This Friday, she's headed to the Indoor Track State Qualifiers for a 3rd time – and has gone to the Outdoor Track State Qualifiers for the last two seasons.

Outside of running, Elisa has a passion for cheer.
She's been doing competitive All-Star Cheerleading with Diamond Athletics for the past seven years and is currently a flyer for the organization's Senior Co-ed Level 3 Team.

She's placed fourth in the nation twice in the past two seasons with her cheerleading team at the D2 Summit in Orlando, Florida.

As an avid cheerleader and track and field star – last weekend Elisa chose to be with both teams.
She competed Saturday morning with her cheer team for their first round in Ocean City, Maryland, then flew back to Rochester that afternoon to compete in the Indoor Track Sectionals. She spent overnight Sunday in a car, driving back to Ocean City to compete with her team for round two early Sunday morning. A bonus: Both teams came out on top!
Outside of athletics, Elisa consistently reaches Honor Roll status in her academics and is a member of the Hornell Academic All-Star team.
Her family told Primetime 585 that Elisa intends to go to West Point Academy and study law.
From all of us here at News 8 and Primetime 585, congratulations, Elisa, and thank you for sharing your light with the community! Good luck in all your future endeavors.

‘All-time best runners': Castelli closes decorated career

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The O'Gorman Track and Field team has produced plenty of talent over the years and that includes senior standout, Libby Castelli. The distance runner closed her decorated career last weekend, as one of the top runners in state history. Libby Castelli had a busy few days at the State Track and Field Meet, running the 800, 1600, 3200 and 1600 Meter Sprint Medley for O'Gorman. 'I just take it one race at a time. I had four races this weekend and just taking it one race at a time, then focusing on recovering and getting to the next race,' Castelli said. Castelli not only won each event, but she set two state records and received the All-Class Gold Medal in four of the races. 'What a great weekend for her to cap her career,' coach Aaron Strand said. 'Winning four gold medals, running some state record times. She just puts in all that hard work and it's fun to see it pay off for her.' The victories mark back-to-back years of winning the three distance races. That success has helped her earn a spot with North Carolina Track and Field Team next year. 'So excited for her. So excited to watch her as she goes on into college and stuff,' Strand said. 'She's definitely one of the state's all-time best runners.' And as she takes her talents to next level, Castelli leaves behind a legacy that she hopes will inspire more girls to hit the track running. 'She's one of the best in the history of South Dakota, so it's great for our younger girls to see that,' Strand said. 'It gives them something to strive for. They got to see all of her hard work pay off.' 'South Dakota isn't a big state, we don't have as many people, but we have some of the best talent, like some really good young girls,' Castelli said. 'I think the future here is really bright, so I hope to just inspire the other girls. They can do great things too.' Castelli set two state records at the state meet, including the 800 meter and the 1600 meter sprint medley. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Local Special Olympics torch run marks 39 years

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Special Olympics athletes know most events have a start and finish. A torch run Friday started at Cobbs Hill Park. 'I know it's a little rain, but we got through it,' Special Olympic athlete Jacob Babcock said. At the run, Babcock reconnected with some of the members of local law enforcement who ran with him during the pandemic. 'So me, Erin, John 'Pre,' and all them and Brett Sobrieraski and Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter, we all came together, it was such an amazing process,' Babcock said. He's talking about Rochester Police Detective Erin Rogers. She helps with the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. 'As soon as you see the athletes and see how excited they are to see you and how they're supportive of you, there's nothing better than that and you just want to support them back,' Rogers said. Cori Piels, also an athlete, will tell you that relationship means a lot. 'It's so nice to have the support of law enforcement. If we didn't have them, we wouldn't be doing this,' Piels said. The two groups have been doing the torch run together for 39 years. The event gives Chris Teich and everyone else a chance to celebrate all things Special Olympics. 'It embodies family, friendship, leadership and so much more,' athlete Chris Teich said. This year's course took them through Park Ave and all the way to Parcel 5 where they stopped running, making it look like this event is one of those that has a finish, but because of the bond between all of them, there's no end in sight. Friday's torch run is part of a series happening across the state. That series will end in Ithaca where the Special Olympics summer games will later in June. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
