
Your Mind Is Your Best Friend And Your Worst Enemy
In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna, 'Oh Arjuna, your mind is your greatest friend, and your greatest enemy." Your mind uplifts you, and your mind puts you down. There is no other enemy outside.
When you have a say over your mind, when you have trained it well to listen to you, and when it is disciplined, it helps you grow and becomes your greatest friend. When the mind is steeped in wrong habits and patterns, it begins to destroy you. And the same mind, when under your control, can uplift your life.
When the mind is your enemy, it ties you down to your past impressions and experiences. It does not let you see things with a fresh, new perspective. This is because everything we perceive is through the mind; even knowledge is perceived through the mind. When the mind is your enemy, it makes you judgmental, brings misery, stiffness, and unhappiness. When the mind is your friend, it brings happiness, freedom, and liberation.
Everyone has some control over their minds. To the extent you have a say over it, to that extent your mind is your friend.
When you are unaware of the tricks the mind plays on you, then life becomes miserable. This is because you have based a big part of your life on what goes on in your mind. When you recognise that all these judgments and holding on to concepts about yourself and others are a creation of your mind, you realise the mess created by it in your life.
Whenever you think, things should be this way or that, it indicates the mind is coming into play, which is all part of the ever-changing material world. This is when you need to focus on that non-changing, abstract, invisible energy or power. When you bring attention to it, you are no longer caught in the grip of the mind.
Just look back at your mind and see what drama and pain it has caused. When you do that, when you become a witness (sakshi-bhava), it is no longer painful; it becomes entertainment. The mind is like a multi-channel television running soap operas, comedy shows, suspense thrillers, and drama in your life.
This is the reason why all the great saints and poets have been intrigued by their minds. 'Oh, my dear mind, how fascinating you are! Why do you get caught up in such trivial things? Why don't you recognize that which is so magnanimous and so beautiful?"
How can you make your mind your greatest ally? The secret to handling your mind is just to let it be! If you try to get rid of the mind, it becomes a stubborn monster. If you just let the mind be, it disappears. Just forcing affirmative thoughts on oneself is not enough to handle the mind, because on the level of the mind, what you resist, persists.
This is where knowing a little bit about the breath can help you manage this monkey mind. Breathing techniques like Sudarshan Kriya and pranayamas steady your life force and, consequently, the mind. As the life force rises in the body, one begins to feel a transformation in the mind and not as a forced mental exercise but as a direct experience. One starts to become happier, more creative, and in command of their mind and emotions.
So, the mind can either be your greatest ally or your greatest enemy. You have the free will to decide what to make of your mind!

This being so, the best course to adopt is to ignore the problems and divert one's energy to availing of the opportunities. Complaint about or protest against problems is of no value. Problems are not created by some person: they are a part of the creation plan of God. No one has the power to change the course of Nature. So when you face a problem, don't be negative. Be normal. Don't be disturbed. Don't allow tension to develop in your mind. Simply assess the situation and, by avoiding the problem, try to discover the opportunities. Believe with complete conviction that there are enormous opportunities waiting for you—either hidden or open. So, set about discovering them, using all your mental powers and energy. In such a situation, lodging complaints and making protests are nothing but a waste of time. Developing tension in your mind is only the result of your failure to understand the law of nature. Annual award instituted in memory of Dasara elephant Arjuna; first honour to be presented on August 4 at Karnataka's Gajapayana
MYSURU: An annual award has been instituted in the name of the Dasara elephant Arjuna, who was martyred during a wild elephant capture operation near Yasaluru, Hassan. The first award will be presented to a mahout, an elephant handler, and a Kavadi, an assistant elephant handler, during Gajapayana at Nagarahole Tiger Forest on August 4. Forest minister Eshwar B. Khandre will present the award to Bhima elephant's mahout, Gunda, and Kavadi Nanjundaswamy, who successfully participated in elephant and wildlife capture operations in places like Hassan, Sakleshpur, and Kodagu, informed Eshwar Khandre. Khandre informed that HD Kote MLA Anil Kumar C suggested establishing an annual award in Arjuna's name. Honouring this suggestion, it has been decided to present the "Arjuna Elephant" award during the annual Gajapayana, a traditional journey of tamed elephants to Mysuru city from the woods. The award will be presented regularly in recognition of the work of mahouts and Kavadis who actively participate in operations to prevent human-wildlife conflict, capture wild animals, successfully conduct these operations, and excel in training and caring for captured elephants. Arjuna, who was captured during the Khedda operation in Kakanakote in 1968, participated in the Dasara celebrations 22 times and carried the 750 kg golden howdah 8 times. He won the appreciation of the nation for performing a highly demanding job elegantly. The award has been established to ensure Arjuna's name remains eternal, as he sacrificed his life to save forest staff. The Dasara elephant selection committee selected the names of the duo for the first Arjuna Award. This auspicious day coincides with the full moon day, or Purnima Tithi, of the month of Shravana, which is a very important time in the Hindu calendar. The day, which is traditionally celebrated with great love and happiness throughout India, represents sibling respect, protection, and affection. Many government and private organisations declare a holiday to celebrate this unique festival. When is Rakshabandhan 2025: Date and time? This year, the most auspicious time to tie the Rakhi—a sacred thread symbolising love and protection—is between 5:47 am and 1:24 pm on August 9. As per the Hindu Panchang, the festival aligns with the Shravana Purnima, making the day spiritually significant and widely celebrated across the country. History of Rakshabandhan 'Rakhi' is another name for this auspicious festival. "Raksha Bandhan" means "the knot of protection" in Sanskrit. The legendary story of Lord Krishna and Draupadi is where the festival got its origin. According to the belief, Lord Krishna was flying a kite when he injured his finger. The Pandavas' wife, Draupadi, cut a piece of material from her saree and wrapped it over his injured finger. He vowed to always keep her safe from harm. It was recognised as "Raksha Sutra" by Lord Krishna. Years later, Lord Krishna kept his word when the Kauravas tried to publicly undress Draupadi after the Pandavas had lost her in a dice game. He fulfilled the promise he had made that day and preserved her dignity by miraculously providing an endless stream of cloth through his heavenly intervention. Raksha Bandhan's origins are connected to a number of fascinating Indian mythological tales. The Mahabharata is one of the most well-known tales. Significance of Rakshabandhan Raksha Bandhan represents the vow of love, devotion, and protection between siblings. Sisters pray for their brothers' health on this day by tying a sacred thread, known as Rakhi, around their wrists. In exchange, brothers promise to keep their sisters safe and frequently present them with presents as a sign of their closeness. The celebration has its origins in Hindu texts and is associated with the divine story of Lord Indra and his wife Shachi, in which Shachi knotted a sacred thread on Indra's wrist to represent protection and success before his fight with the demons.
