Bengals' Joe Burrow credits Peyton Manning for his involvement in Netflix's 'Quarterback' series
That is why it was a surprise when Netflix announced in late March that the Cincinnati Bengals' star was going to be featured on the second season of the hit 'Quarterback' series.
After joking that they 'caught me on the right day I guess," Burrow pointed out that Peyton Manning's involvement in the series made the opportunity too good to pass up.
'I have a lot of respect for him. When that guy reaches out to you and asks you to do something, then most of the time I'm going to say yeah,' Burrow said of Manning. 'I probably wouldn't have done it if he wasn't involved, but I have a lot of trust and faith in him to not do anything that would hurt me or the team.'
Even though Burrow lamented the loss of privacy after his home was broken into last December, he did make a high-profile appearance at The Met Gala in New York two weeks ago. That came on the heels of last year's appearance for Vogue at Paris Fashion Week with friend and former LSU teammate Justin Jefferson.
'It's a new experience. It was fun,' Burrow said about The Met Gala. 'It's about five minutes of taking pictures, and then it's just a little dinner party. So it was good people, good vibes. I was happy that I was able to go. Maybe we'll go again. I don't know. We'll see how we play it by ear.'
Burrow led the league with 4,918 passing yards and 43 touchdowns, but had his house broken into in December while the Bengals were in Dallas facing the Cowboys in a Monday night game.
'That was definitely a curveball I didn't quite expect throughout the whole process, but the people involved in it, working on it day to day, were great and weren't too intrusive,' Burrow said about the break-in and how that was handled on both series.
The Netflix series is a joint production between NFL Films, Manning's Omaha Productions and Patrick Mahomes' 2PM Productions. Burrow and the Bengals were also part of last year's 'Hard Knocks' in-season series that focused on the AFC North.
Burrow added he has screened a couple of episodes of the upcoming season of 'Quarterback' to provide input to Manning and producers, but likely would not watch the entire series when it is released in July.
Coach Zac Taylor said that despite having two series following the team and his star quarterback around late last season, the film crews did a good job blending in. Atlanta's Kirk Cousins and Detroit's Jared Goff will also be featured on the series.
'Part of the quarterback show is just behind the scenes playing quarterback. It's not necessarily the home life and the off field. I'm sure there's a little bit of that, but for the most part, it's just a respect for the game,' he said. 'I hope people get an appreciation of what they go through every single day of game week and over the course of the season, and how their role can evolve.'
It has been a good offseason so far for Burrow. Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase — his two main playmakers — signed extensions. Burrow said he found out about it via text while attending the bachelor party of former Cincinnati defensive lineman Sam Hubbard, who recently retired.
Burrow, who will be going into his sixth season, also noted this is the healthiest he has felt during an offseason program.
'I'm not sure I'm changing too much. Just like every year you want to get bigger, stronger, faster. Refine things you can refine. That's kind of the process every year," he said. "I've had injuries that kind of change the offseason mindset a little bit. This year I don't have any of those, and that's great, because I can focus on getting better all around and become a more well-rounded player.'
Burrow and the Bengals biggest focus will be getting off to a better start to the season. Cincinnati ended the season on a five-game winning streak, and just missed the playoffs with a 9-8 record after dropping its first three games and being 4-7 at its bye week.
The Bengals open at Cleveland on Sept. 7 and host Jacksonville in Week 2 before a stretch of five straight games against playoff teams from last season, with three on the road.
'This time of year is about the same. I would say we're working a little harder in the weight room and running. But at the end of the day, we just have to go out and play better early in the year," Burrow said.
"You can come up with all these different things to try to make that happen. I think playing in preseason games will help. We haven't had those discussions yet, but based on the little that we have, I imagine we'll be playing more, and I think that'll help.
"But we'll see. I think at the end of the day, we just have to take some ownership and come out of the gates and execute and play better.'

As Hendrickson continues to be a hold-in during training camp, the Bengals are listening to trade offers for the star edge rusher, NFL Media reported Sunday. No deal is imminent, and it's unclear if Hendrickson will wind up playing elsewhere in 2025, NFL Media added in its report. Hendrickson and the Bengals were in a contract dispute for virtually the entire offseason, with Cincinnati even allowing him to talk to other teams about a potential deal at one point. However, no deal came to fruition, and the Bengals and Hendrickson have failed to reach an agreement on a new deal as he enters the final year of his contract. With no contract extension coming to fruition this offseason, Hendrickson wasn't shy to share how upset he was with the team. He skipped essentially the Bengals' entire offseason program, including mandatory minicamp, before sitting out the first few days of training camp in July. Hendrickson eventually ended his hold out, returning to the Bengals on July 30. That led to some optimism that a deal could get done soon, but he hasn't practiced with the team at all. ADVERTISEMENT As Hendrickson is owed $16 million in the final year of his contract, the contracts for top edge rushers have grown exponentially this offseason. T.J. Watt became the latest to earn a rich deal at the position, agreeing to a three-year, $123 million ($41 million per year) deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason. Micah Parsons seems like a possibility to break that mark as well, but he's also in a contract dispute with his team and requested a trade from the Dallas Cowboys earlier in August. Hendrickson, 30, might not end up breaking Watt's record for the largest contract ever for a non-quarterback, but he has a good case to receive a deal that would pay him at least $34 million per year, which would make him one of the five highest-paid edge rushers in the league. He's been named a Pro Bowler in all four seasons since he joined the Bengals in 2021. He's also recorded at least 14.0 sacks in three of his first four seasons in Cincinnati, including a league-high 17.5 sacks last season. Additionally, Hendrickson has also been good at generating pressure. He had 83 pressures and was second in pass rush win rate last season (24%). 4 logical Trey Hendrickson trade destinations as Bengals ponder deal
Superstar pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson's contract situation with the Cincinnati Bengals seems to have reached a point of no return. After months of little to no meaningful negotiating progress, which has included plenty of passive-aggressive swipes from Hendrickson, the Bengals appear ready to give up on the entire process. On Sunday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that while the Bengals aren't actively shopping Hendrickson in trades just yet, they are taking calls and seeing what they could potentially receive for him on the open market. Needless to say, that is a huge step forward with someone like Hendrickson, who led the NFL in sacks last year and ostensibly still has plenty left in the tank at age 30. In the interest of providing a clean off-ramp for both Hendrickson and the Bengals, here are four NFL teams that might make the most sense in possible trades for the powerful EDGE player. 1. Detroit Lions The Lions are lucky. Even after losing both their offensive and defensive coordinators in the offseason, Detroit still has one of the NFL's most complete rosters. That is, well, aside from a bona fide complementary pass-rusher alongside franchise player Aidan Hutchinson. The Lions' EDGE depth behind Hutchinson features names like Marcus Davenport and Al-Quadin Muhammad, which isn't awful, but it's also not ideal for a team that views itself as a Super Bowl contender. Throw a dynamic field-tilter like Hendrickson into this mix instead, and I'm not sure the Lions would have a real on-paper weakness. 2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Fresh off their fourth consecutive NFC South division championship, it still feels like the Buccaneers are missing something. Yes, they have the ostensible franchise quarterback in Baker Mayfield. Yes, they've still got difference-makers like the always-reliable pass Mike Evans and perennial All-Pro tackle Tristan Wirfs. But this was a team with a bottom-four pass defense last year. That's what happens when you don't really have any proven pass-rushers bending the pocket. Enter Hendrickson, someone who opposing offensive coordinators would actually have to gameplan for. I wouldn't envy anyone having to choose between giving Hendrickson or Vita Vea extra attention. 3. Washington Commanders For the time being, it feels like the Commanders have bigger fish to fry with the awkward Terry McLaurin situation. You don't mess around with Jayden Daniels' top playmaker going into a pivotal second year, you know? However, if they were to resolve their dispute with McLaurin any time soon, that's when it would be a great time to get greedy. That's when it'd be time to secure a true EDGE talisman for a Washington defense that was mostly mediocre last year. The Commanders haven't had that type of guy coming off the end of the offensive formation since Montez Sweat and Jonathan Allen. They're going to need someone like Hendrickson to take the next step and ensure that their marvelous 2024 campaign wasn't a one-off fluke. 4. Chicago Bears The Bears seem like they're brewing something special. They've got Caleb Williams under the tutelage of the much-acclaimed Ben Johnson. They've got a cadre of offensive weapons headlined by promising young receiver Rome Odunze. They even have the respected Dennis Allen leading a defensive unit with one of the more underrated cores in pro football. What the Bears are missing, though, is someone offenses have to fear up front outside of Montez Sweat. As it stands, it's rather simple to scheme Sweat out and dare any of the Bears' other pass-rushers to beat you. This would not be the case with Hendrickson, to say the least. What other NFL teams could trade for Trey Hendrickson? The New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans, who are at two different points in their respective rebuilds around Drake Maye and Cam Ward, could also be in the mix for Hendrickson. However, it's worth noting that the Bengals are much more likely to trade Hendrickson out of the AFC rather than to any potential conference rival in the middle of his prime.

Browns have inquired about Pro Bowl pass rusher Trey Hendrickson
In-division trades rarely happen, but that has not stopped the Cleveland Browns from calling their AFC North foe, the Cincinnati Bengals, about the availability of All-Pro pass rusher Trey Hendrickson. Fresh off of a preseason Week 2 win, the Browns are still looking to get better. While Hendrickson showed up at Bengals' training camp, the two sides have not agreed to a long-term deal with the NFL's sack leader from a year ago, entering the last year of his contract. As a result, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero has reported that the Bengals are now seriously entertaining trade offers for Hendrickson, with a deal looking unlikely. He wasn't the only NFL insider with a scoop on the situation, however. NFL insider Jordan Schultz has added that three teams appear at the forefront of trade talks with the Bengals, and the Browns are among them. The other two teams mentioned at the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers. Schultz did pour some cold water on the talks, however, stating: "An in-division and in-state trade is highly unlikely and any deal will be tough regardless. Cincinnati is believed to want an impact player (or two) plus a draft pick in return." It's hard to imagine what impact player the Browns could add to trade talks, but it's unrealistic for the Bengals to expect anything more than a Day 2 pick in exchange for Hendrickson. While he is coming off a career year in Cincinnati, Hendrickson is 30 years old and is immediately going to need a new contract from the team that trades for him. That's going to limit the amount of capital the Bengals can receive in return. We'll see how this plays out, but the Browns apparently aren't done big fish hunting.
