Second attempt: Workation hubs on cards at Morjim, Ashwem, Colva

The Goa Information Technology Development Corporation (GITDC) has announced plans to set up workation hubs at Morjim, Ashwem and Colva as part of a fresh initiative to attract digital nomads and remote-working tourists to the state's coastal belt.
The project will be implemented through a public-private partnership and the GITDC has begun scouting for private investors to design, build, finance, and operate the hubs for 20 years. After the concession period is completed, ownership of the structure will be handed over to govt. The concession period may be extended by an additional 10 years, subject to performance criteria outlined in the concession agreement, said officials.
Classified as multi-utility structures, these will serve as co-working spaces as well as a lounge with showers for travellers who wish to combine work with leisure. The facilities will be designed to cater to the growing segment of digital nomads, freelancers, and remote-working professionals seeking an integrated 'work-vacation' lifestyle in Goa.
Under the proposed model, the private concessionaire will bear the full cost of construction and development, in line with the designs, specifications, and regulatory requirements set out in the Request for Proposal (RFP).
With this move, GITDC aims to enable local economic activity through sustainable tourism infrastructure. Morjim, Ashwem, and Colva are popular beaches that attract a steady influx of international and domestic tourists.
In 2022, the IT department had outlined a proposal to promote a workation (work and vacation) concept by spending about Rs 11 crore on co-working spaces on the beach. However, due to objections, the proposal lost steam.
The scope of the project included developing all allied facilities essential for a fully functional workation hub, including seating areas, high-speed internet infrastructure, collaborative zones, and ancillary amenities that support a productive yet relaxed work environment.

ED arrests ex-Axis fund manager in Rs 200-crore front-running case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Viresh Joshi, a former chief trader and fund manager of Axis Mutual Fund, for allegedly cheating investors of around `200 crore through front-running. Front-running refers to an illegal practice in the securities market in which brokers or traders execute orders for their own benefit using advance knowledge of pending client orders. This malpractice compromises market integrity and disadvantages other investors. Joshi was arrested on August 2 and was produced before a Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court which granted the ED his custody till August 8. The ED initiated its investigation on the basis of an FIR registered by Mumbai Police in December 2024, which alleged that Joshi exploited confidential information on the trades to be executed on behalf of Axis Mutual Fund to preemptively trade stocks, generating substantial illicit gains. 'He cheated the investors of Axis Mutual Fund which holds assets under management of more than Rs two lakh crore,' a ED spokesperson said in a statement. 'Joshi had utilised a terminal in Dubai to punch the front running trade orders through mule trading accounts obtained from various brokers… many other traders/brokers had also misused the advance inputs on Axis Mutual Fund Trades and indulged in front running to generate illicit trade profits,' the ED said. The proceeds of crime could be much higher than `200 crore, it said.

Passenger traffic at Coimbatore airport crosses 9.5 lakh in a quarter for first time

Coimbatore: The city airport has recorded a 21% increase in passenger traffic in the first quarter of the current financial year compared to the same period last fiscal. And in a milestone, passenger traffic crossed the 9.5 lakh mark for the first time in a quarter. As per the data released by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the city airport handled 9,51,249 passengers from April 1 to June 30, against 7,83,281 in the corresponding period last fiscal. The growth was primarily driven by a surge in international passenger traffic, which rose by 49% to 80,976 from 54,403 in the first quarter of 2024-25 financial year. Domestic passenger traffic also recorded a 19% increase to 8,70,273 from 7,28,378 during the period under discussion. The AAI noted that this was the highest growth recorded in a quarter for passenger traffic at Coimbatore airport. At 3,089 metric tonnes, freight movement too registered a 19% increase in the first quarter of this fiscal from 2,596 metric tonnes in the same period last financial year. This growth was driven by a 45% increase in international freight, which rose to 575 metric tonnes from 398 metric tonnes. Domestic freight also increased by 14% to 2,513 metric tonnes from 2,198 metric tonnes during the period under discussion. Airport officials attributed the growth in both passenger and freight traffic to increased connectivity. "The launch of international flights by IndiGo to Abu Dhabi and Singapore contributed to the growth in international passenger and freight traffic. On the domestic front, the addition of daily IndiGo flights to Mumbai, Bengaluru and Goa contributed to the rise in the passenger and freight movement," said an official at the city airport. J Sathish, director, Kongu Global Forum, said the first quarter performance of the city airport was impressive and demonstrated its true potential. "It recorded one of the highest growth percentages in the country." He, however, cautioned that the momentum might not continue into the second quarter, owing to curtailment of flight services. "From July 1, Air India flights to Mumbai and Chennai and IndiGo flights to Mumbai and Chennai were discontinued. As a result, passengers now have fewer options, and this situation has led to a drop in passenger numbers in July. Fares have also increased compared to the previous quarter," he said and urged authorities to reinstate these flight services immediately. "Air India Express has strong connectivity to Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad from several airports in South India. However, it is yet to commence operations from Coimbatore," Sathish said.
