Building an inclusive and intelligent India by 2030

As India steps into the second half of the 2020s, artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept—it is an active force transforming the nation's industries, governance, and daily life. By 2030, AI is expected to evolve from a technological add-on into a foundational infrastructure—akin to roads, electricity, or Aadhaar—that enables inclusion, innovation, and intelligent growth. Far from being confined to the realm of coders and tech giants, AI in India is rapidly becoming a platform for national transformation. It is being designed not just to automate but to empower; not merely to replace jobs but to create livelihoods; not to replicate Silicon Valley, but to respond to India's own socio-economic realities.
A defining feature of India's AI journey by 2030 will be its treatment of AI as a public good. Moving beyond the private sector, AI will become embedded in governance, education, healthcare, agriculture, and public services. It will underpin everything from rural banking systems to disease surveillance, school curriculums to municipal operations.
Crucially, AI in India is being tailored to work under constraints—low data bandwidth, limited digital literacy, and linguistic diversity. In contrast to many Western economies, where AI often serves as a tool for efficiency and profit maximisation, in India it serves necessity. Whether it is making rural education accessible or ensuring public distribution systems reach the last mile, the use cases are urgent, human-centric, and deeply local.
India's demographic structure offers it an unparalleled advantage. With a median age under 30, the country has the largest youth population capable of adapting to, and shaping, the AI revolution. By 2030, AI fluency will become as commonplace as knowledge of Microsoft Office—expected across roles and sectors, not just among programmers.
This evolution in skillsets will be supported by the integration of AI literacy into school and university curriculums. Modular, localised learning kits and state-level upskilling programmes are already being developed, particularly targeting rural and underserved communities. The aim is to ensure that every student in India graduates AI-aware—capable not only of using AI tools but of thinking critically about them.
One of the most persistent myths surrounding AI is that it will lead to mass unemployment. However, projections for India challenge this narrative robustly. Rather than erasing jobs, AI is expected to catalyse the creation of 7 to 10 million new roles by 2030, many of which will be in sectors not traditionally associated with technology—media, agriculture, education, logistics, and public administration.
For every job that is automated, estimates suggest 2 to 3 new human-machine collaboration roles will emerge. These include positions like AI-assisted journalists, agri-tech advisors, AI social workers, and prompt designers. Notably, many of these roles are expected to take root in non-urban India, thereby decentralising the benefits of the AI economy.
By eliminating repetition, reducing inefficiency, and enhancing decision-making, AI allows human workers to focus on creativity, empathy, and leadership—qualities that remain uniquely human.
India's vast and varied population generates an unparalleled volume of real-world data—linguistic, visual, behavioural, and situational. This data richness positions India to build AI that is more robust, generalisable, and adaptable than many western models.
From non-English voice processing to energy-efficient AI models that run on low-end devices, innovations in India are deeply contextual. These developments are not about technological prestige, but about relevance and reach—bringing AI to the remote village, the overburdened classroom, and the underfunded clinic.
By 2030, AI is expected to be integral not just to policy formulation but also to policy execution. Its role will extend to predicting disease outbreaks, optimising food and medicine distribution systems, streamlining public grievance redressal mechanisms, and improving disaster response strategies.
The future of AI in India will be treated the way we treat roads, electricity, and Aadhaar as public infrastructure for inclusion and empowerment. And VolkAI is already building for that future.

By the end of this decade, the most significant AI breakthroughs may not come from Silicon Valley but from unexpected corners of India—a classroom in Bihar, a municipal centre in Bhopal, a startup in Guwahati, or a sugarcane farm in Maharashtra.
India's approach to AI is not about racing to the top of global leaderboards. It is about defining the future of AI in a way that aligns with democratic values, pluralism, and developmental goals. It is about creating a version of AI that serves people—not just profits.
As the nation looks toward 2030, one thing is clear: India will not merely adapt to the age of artificial intelligence. It will help define what that age should look like—ethical, inclusive, locally relevant, and globally impactful.

If America goes after India's oil trade, China will benefit

WHEN WESTERN countries began boycotting Russian oil in 2022, India saw an opportunity. Some 2.6m barrels a day (b/d) of crude once destined for Europe were available—at a sweet discount. India, which bought next to no oil from Russia in 2021, pounced. It has remained Russia's biggest customer ever since. Today it imports nearly 2m b/d of Russian 'sour", heavy crude, representing 35-40% of its crude imports. The supply reduces India's import bill at a time when the world's fastest-growing big economy burns ever more petroleum. Local refiners make a killing by processing the stuff into fuels that they then export at full cost. For three years Ukraine's allies did not object, and the strategy looked savvy. Now it is in jeopardy. Irked that Vladimir Putin is making no effort to end his campaign in Ukraine, on August 6th President Donald Trump slapped an extra 25% tariff on India, which he accuses of funding Russia's 'war machine". A bill vowing levies of up to 500% on countries that buy Russian oil is making its way through Congress. Meanwhile, the European Union's 18th package of sanctions will ban refined products made from Russian crude in January. The tariffs will hurt but the bans lack bite. Indian refineries—other than those backed by Rosneft, a Russian oil giant—source most crude from outside Russia; they can argue their products are not made from Russian stuff even if there is some in the blend. That makes the EU ban hard to enforce. Mr Trump's hope is to bring down Russia's oil revenues in order to force Mr Putin to halt his offensive. Preventing Russian oil from reaching foreign markets, however, could push global prices up, which would be politically uncomfortable for America's president. All this might explain why the market remains calm. There is still potential for a storm. Unlike China, which imports 2m b/d from Russia, India does not have a history of defying American sanctions. When Uncle Sam pledged to penalise anyone buying Iranian oil during Mr Trump's first term, India swiftly complied. This time the White House is 'serious about pressuring India to go to zero", says a source familiar with its thinking. Placid markets may embolden Mr Trump. He could supplement his tariffs with threats that any bank, port or firm facilitating Russian sales will be cut off from American finance. What if he did? First, India would race to find new supplies. Its refiners have already reduced Russian orders by 40-50%, estimates a trader. In theory, Middle Eastern countries, which have 3.5m b/d in spare capacity, could provide additional help, along with producers from Africa and elsewhere. In practice, a lot of Gulf supply is already committed to East Asia through long-term contracts, and much is a lighter type than the 'Urals" for which Indian refiners would be looking. Russia, meanwhile, would struggle for buyers. Chinese refiners could absorb more oil, and the country's leaders have shown they can retaliate successfully against Mr Trump's tariffs, but they do not want to end up reliant on any single supplier. Such analysis dictates that, were America to insist on immediate compliance, global oil prices would jump, perhaps to over $80 a barrel. Mr Trump could not countenance that for long. Very soon he might introduce waivers phasing in the restrictions over six months, allowing markets to adjust—a repeat of 2018-19, when soaring prices in the wake of Mr Trump's sanctions against Iran forced America's president to soften his approach. An oil glut is expected early next year, which might accommodate tough-but-phased-in Russian sanctions. Given enough time, India would probably manage to replace most of its current Russian supply, albeit at a higher cost (Urals crude currently trades at a $5-10 discount to other comparable grades). The margins of Indian refiners would be crushed. As they retreated from the market, the winners would be their Chinese rivals, which have been restocking fast in recent months, giving them plenty of firepower. Being less exposed to American sanctions, they would also continue to buy Russian crude—at a growing discount.

A recent study by Common Sense Media, a group that studies and advocates for using digital media sensibly, found that over 70% of US teens are now engaging with AI companions, with nearly half using them regularly. The findings come amid new concerns about how advanced language models like ChatGPT are influencing vulnerable users. A report published by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) highlighted that AI chatbots are not just tools for productivity or academic help, but also emotional confidants for many adolescents. When left unchecked, this overreliance may lead teens into unsafe digital interactions that mimic real-world peer pressure or misguided validation. AI tools are replacing peer interaction For today's students, AI chatbots are not just search engines. They are designed to sound conversational, curious, and responsive — qualities that closely resemble human interaction. , CEO of , acknowledged this shift during a Federal Reserve conference, stating that young people increasingly say that "I can't make any decision in my life without telling ChatGPT everything that's going on." Altman said that the company is trying to study what it calls 'emotional overreliance' on AI, which he described as 'a really common thing' among teens. This overreliance was tested in CCDH's latest research, which involved researchers posing as 13-year-olds and interacting with ChatGPT. In over 1,200 conversations, the chatbot issued helpful warnings in some cases but also offered step-by-step advice on harmful behaviours such as drug use, extreme dieting and even self-harm. These revelations have alarmed digital safety advocates, not just because of the chatbot's failure to flag harmful prompts, but because students may treat these tools as private mentors, believing them to be safer than peers or adults. Why schools must step in With AI tools being used more widely across age groups, schools are being urged to introduce age-appropriate digital literacy programmes that go beyond teaching students how to use technology. Instead, the focus is shifting to understanding how digital systems are designed, what risks they carry, and how to build boundaries when interacting with AI companions. The concern is not limited to misuse. Digital literacy education also includes helping students understand the limitations of AI, such as the randomness of responses, the lack of real empathy, and the inability to verify age or context. Tools like ChatGPT are not built to replace adult judgment or emotional guidance, yet many young users treat them as such. Consent, safety and policy gaps Despite OpenAI stating that ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13, there is no effective age verification mechanism on the platform. Users are simply required to enter a birthdate that meets the age minimum. This loophole allowed CCDH researchers to create fake 13-year-old accounts and explore ChatGPT's responses to deeply troubling queries. Other platforms like Instagram and TikTok have begun incorporating age-gating features, nudging children towards safer experiences or limited accounts. Chatbots, however, remain behind the curve, and schools may need to fill this gap until regulation catches up. Common Sense Media has rated ChatGPT as a 'moderate risk' for teens, primarily because of the lack of customisation for age-appropriate responses. However, it also highlights that intentional misuse by students, especially when masked as 'just a project' or 'helping a friend,' can bypass even well-placed safety features. What digital literacy needs to look like now It is time to rethink how digital education is structured in American schools. Instead of treating digital literacy as a one-time module or a tech club activity, it should be embedded across subjects. Students must learn how algorithms work, how bias and sycophancy creep into AI-generated answers, and how to differentiate between factual advice and persuasive or harmful suggestions. Moreover, emotional literacy must go hand-in-hand with digital skills. When chatbots are being treated like friends, students need support to understand what real empathy, consent, and trust look like and why AI cannot offer those things. This may also involve training teachers to identify when students are over-relying on AI tools or retreating from peer-based or adult support systems. With over 800 million people worldwide now using ChatGPT, according to a July 2025 report by JPMorgan Chase , AI tools are already woven into the daily routines of many young users. But while the scale of use is global, the responsibility of guiding teenagers toward safe and informed usage falls locally, often on schools. The findings from Common Sense Media and CCDH do not call for panic. Instead, they call for intentional, curriculum-based digital literacy that equips students to use technology safely, question it intelligently, and resist forming emotional dependencies on something that cannot truly understand them.
