Toyota has released the first series of clearer teaser images of its new SUV debuting on 21 May, now officially confirmed as indeed the fifth generation RAV4.
One of its most important models, which last year became the world's third best-seller with sales of 1.02-million units, the first new RAV4 in seven years will still ride on the existing TNGA-K platform, but with speculated extensive revisions similar to those of the latest Camry.
What to expect
Previously teased via a series of overhead shots only, the latest depictions reveals part of the front facia resembling not only the Camry, but also the new C-HR and certain Lexus modes.

From a design and light cluster arrangement, the rear has seemingly been styled with hints from the new Avanza, Mitsubishi Xpander and even the Peugeot 3008.

Already seen, the interior takes after the all-electric bZ4X, but with model specific detailing such as a box-type design for the digital instrument cluster and a freestanding infotainment system of unknown size.
Shown in spy images as having a silhouette similar to the Crown Signia that replaced the Venza in the United States last year, the RAV4 will reportedly continue to be offered with hybrid and plug-in hybrid powerunits, though seemingly no longer with an electrically unassisted combustion engine option.

The model that unsettled the Ford F-150 to become the US' best-selling vehicle last year with sales of 475 193 versus 460 915 units, the RAV4 will most likely to go on-sale around year-end in Japan and the States, before being exported to other markets later.
As such, market availability for South Africa will only be announced at a later stage. If approved, expect sales to possibly start by the end of 2025 or in early 2026.

SA's auto sector hit by job losses and company closures

Low domestic sales of locally made cars, an influx of imports and low local content have led to 12 company closures and more than 4,000 job losses in the South African motor industry over two years, the trade minister said on Wednesday. South Africa, a market long dominated by the likes of Volkswagen, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz, saw sales of 515,850 locally produced cars last year, far below the South Africa Automotive Masterplan 2035 target of 784,509, minister Parks Tau told delegates at an auto parts conference. About 64% of vehicles sold in South Africa are imports. Additionally, localisation — the level of local assembly, labour and components — remains stagnant at 39%, well short of the 60% target, while US tariffs now significantly affect the country's R28.7bn automotive exports, he added. 'These pressures have triggered 12 company closures and more than 4,000 job losses in two years,' Tau said. South Africa's automotive industry employs 115,000 people directly, with more than 80,000 in component manufacturing alone. Experts say that with the US tariffs on cars and parts that were imposed from April, jobs are under threat as some companies are set to lose contracts in America. South Africa on Tuesday submitted a revised offer for a trade deal with Washington, in an effort to lower the 30% tariff US President Donald Trump imposed last week. To help respond to the challenges in the industry, an incentive scheme for local manufacturing now includes electric vehicles and associated components, Tau said. 'Localisation is not merely policy compliance, it is existential. A 5% increase in local content would unlock R30bn in new procurement, dwarfing the R4.4bn US export market,' Tau said. International manufacturers such as Stellantis and China's Chery are looking to localise production in South Africa, with Stellantis ready to break ground in the Eastern Cape.

We also expect a unique body hue (seen on the model here, which was showcased at Toyota SA's 2025 SOMI event) will be available. While the interior of this derivative hasn't been revealed, the magazine expects 'Legend 55' badging will be present, along with a few other unique trim elements.
