The best mall in America? Right here in Florida, according to new nationwide ranking

Yahooa day ago

Remember malls? They're still out there, and the best one is in Florida.
For decades, the big, air-conditioned wonderlands were the place to be, with shop after shop of fresh new items, a packed and diverse food court and often a movie theater. You met friends there, took your family, saw the new fashions, spent the day, or just sat and people-watched.
Malls have been suffering since online sales — where retailers didn't have to cover the costs of renting space in a brick-and-mortar building — took a huge bite out of their revenues. An average of 1,170 shopping malls closed every year between 2017 and 2022 in the United States, according to Capital One, and no new indoor megamalls have been built since 2006.
But there are plenty of malls that are thriving, and USA TODAY has ranked the Top 10. The No. 1 mall is right here in the Sunshine State — and it beat the Mall of America.
"With diverse selections of stores to choose from, tantalizing restaurants in the food court, inspired entertainment options, and special events and seasonal activities that bring their local communities together, shopping malls are vibrant hubs that offer plenty to enjoy," USA TODAY's 10BEST said in the ranking released June 11.
The winners were chosen by USA TODAY readers, from a list nominated by 10BEST editors and a panel of experts.
The largest mall in Florida, the Aventura Mall at 19501 Biscayne Blvd. in Aventura between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, is, appropriately for the Sunshine State, half mall and half destination attraction.
"Aventura Mall has more than 300 retail shops, experiences, and dining options, and boasts a museum-worthy art collection," 10BEST editors said.
"Design features include an art installation and fountain titled 'Gorillas in the Mist,' a koi pond, and a giant, chrome slide tower created by artist Carsten Höller. The Aventura Mall regularly hosts community events such as story time, weekly yoga, and a farmers market.
"The Brightline Train, which runs between Orlando and Miami, has added a stop at the Aventura Mall, so getting here is easier than ever."
It's known for its wealth of luxury boutiques and luxe name brands — Hermès, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, SKIMS, Cartier, Fendi, Rivian, Givenchy, Tiffany & Co. and more — and its 24-screen AMC theater, more than 50 eateries and world-class restaurants, and spacious play areas, and an arts program that adds over 20 art pieces throughout the mall to your shopping experience.
'This award is a testament to Aventura Mall teams' and tenants' unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional experiences for our guests,' Jackie Soffer, chairman and CEO of Turnberry, owner of Aventura Mall, said in a release. 'We take great pride in Aventura Mall's continued position as the best mall for iconic brands and first-to-market experiences, helping define South Florida's place on the national and international stage.'
"There are hundreds upon hundreds of indoor shopping malls throughout the U.S., but which among them is the very best?" Here's what readers picked.
Aventura Mall, Aventura, Florida
Mall of America, Bloomington, Minnesota
Galleria Dallas, Dallas, Texas
The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards, New York City, New York
King of Prussia Mall, King of Prussia, Pennsylvania
Scottsdale Fashion Square, Scottsdale, Arizona
American Dream, East Rutherford, New Jersey
Grapevine Mills, Grapevine, Texas
Tysons Corner, Tysons, Virginia
Brookfield Place, New York City, New York
The USA TODAY 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards highlight the very best in travel, food + drink, and lifestyle. Every week, USA TODAY 10BEST invites a panel of industry experts to nominate their favorite points of interest and attractions across a wide range of categories. 10BEST editors then vet these nominations and select a final set of nominees to be presented to the voting public for a period of four weeks.

Disneyland says MrBeast's '$500,000' date was an after-hours experience Show Caption Hide Caption Disney launches new Florida resident ticket deal Walt Disney World has announced the launch of a new ticket deal for Florida residents just in time for the summer. Fox - 35 Orlando Disneyland is offering more detail about MrBeast's viral date after YouTube's most popular creator said he paid $500,000 to have the entire theme park to himself. "Disney won't just hand over their keys to anyone, but for this once-in-a-lifetime date, we were given the entire park for one night," MrBeast, the social media persona of Jimmy Donaldson, says in the video with more than 66 million views. For the video, Donaldson took this fiancée Thea Booysen on six dates ranging from $1 to $500,000, concluding with what he described as a private evening at Disneyland. MrBeast's trip was held after hours, park says MrBeast and his team visited Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California "a couple of weeks ago" for an after-hours experience at the park, a Disney spokesperson told USA TODAY on June 11. While MrBeast and his crew didn't have to face any lines or crowds, the park didn't change their normal operating hours to accommodate the influencer, either. Variations of this experience are available to all customers, including Disney After Hours, in which customers can purchase tickets for three extended hours after the park's traditional closing time. The park also offers Disney's Fair Tale Weddings & Honeymoons, which allows couples and their family to rent various venues, including The Sleeping Beauty Castle Forecourt and Small World Mall. One upcoming after-hours event is Disneyland's "Pride Nite" celebration from June 16-18. You may not get the park to yourself, but the park says guests can expect shorter wait times and special entertainment experiences. Disney did not specify if it is possible for customers to rent out the entire theme park. However, several Disney-centric blogs like Magic Guides say fans shouldn't get their hopes up about getting the park to themselves for a day. "Closing down the resort for a day would be a public relations nightmare and would severely disrupt how guests could plan and book their trips," Magic Guides' author Joshua Powell wrote. One celebrity actually did rent out the park MrBeast isn't the first and likely won't be the last celebrity to make a solo appearance at Disneyland. On Feb. 27, 1992, actress Elizabeth Taylor rented out all of Disneyland to celebrate her 60th birthday. The entire park shut down for the birthday bash, which required extra security. Hundreds of celebrities attended the party, a possible marketing win for Disney. Greta Cross is a national trending reporter at USA TODAY. Story idea? Email her at gcross@

Why it's still so hard to get from Brightline to Aventura Mall

When Miami-Dade County paid $76 million to build a Brightline station in Aventura, the idea was that riders would be able to easily cross Biscayne Boulevard to get to Aventura Mall. But more than two years after the station opened, the privately operated train company has yet to install the pedestrian bridge, first expected to be ready by last Thanksgiving, per Miami Today. Why it matters: Since Brightline discontinued a free shuttle service to the mall last year, train passengers must either book a rideshare or walk more than a mile to access Florida's largest mall, which receives 28 million annual visitors. Citizen journalist and YouTuber Joel Franco recently documented his experience making the "ridiculously long walk" from the station to the mall, which took him 25 minutes one way. He pointed out how Metrobus service no longer reaches the Aventura station, further limiting transportation options. Yes, but: Riders with premium tickets, which include free drinks and snacks, also receive a $10 Uber voucher they can use to cover their connection to the mall. For context: A premium one-way ride from Miami to Aventura can run you around $50, versus around $15 for a regular ticket, according to a recent review of pricing on the Brightline website. What they're saying: Brightline spokesperson Ashley Blasewitz told Axios that "projects of this magnitude are complicated and require a lot of collaboration" with stakeholders, ranging from mall owner Turnberry to government agencies, including the Florida Department of Transportation. "Everyone wants to provide easy pedestrian access to the Aventura Mall for Brightline guests and this bridge will be a great way to do that," Blasewitz wrote in a statement. "We have completed all the steps necessary to begin construction including procurement of the bridge structure which is already on site."

Aventura Mall fans already know it's the best mall in the United States. Now the sprawling shopping center has national recognition, too. The Northeast Miami-Dade mall, a city unto itself with plenty of offerings and surrounding traffic jams, plays big. There's a big slide, an Apple Store, an Italian food hall and market. Now it also has a big ranking: Best Mall in America, as voted in the new USA Today 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards. 'Being named the best mall in the USA Today 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards reflects our continued commitment to curating exceptional experiences,' said Jackie Soffer, chairman and CEO of Turnberry, the majority owner of Aventura Mall. 'From welcoming Florida's first Eataly to bringing the most coveted fashion and lifestyle brands, and supporting culture through our museum-quality art collection, we're proud to offer a premier destination that continues to evolve. We thank our loyal guests for their continued support and for making this achievement possible,' Soffer said in a statement to the Miami Herald. Eataly isn't the only first-in-Florida to open at sprawling Aventura Mall. Other brands trying Florida firsts in the last year include recent arrivals like Massimo Dutti wardrobe store, the fashion boutique Cinq à Sept, Dolce Vita footwear and Kim Kardashian's Skims store. MORE: How 'Florida firsts' are defining Aventura Mall. Here are some of the newcomers Twenty malls across the country were nominated for consideration by a panel of 'USA Today experts' in the fields of travel and lifestyle, according to the publication.
