Nagpur ZP, Panchayat Samiti Elections Get Green Light; Ward Formation Deadline Set
Nagpur: The Maharashtra govt has initiated the long-awaited process to hold general elections for zilla parishads (ZPs) and panchayat samitis (PSs), including Nagpur, whose bodies were dissolved earlier this year on January 17.
A detailed order was issued on Thursday, outlining the steps and deadlines to determine new ward boundaries ahead of the polls.
In an official communication dated June 12, the state issued orders to determine the number of members and draw fresh ward boundaries for all affected rural local bodies. District collectors have been empowered to carry out this critical groundwork as part of the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti General Election (Number of Members, Ward Composition) Order, 2025.
The process includes fixing the number of members for each ZP and PS, which is currently at 57 and 114 respectively, and dividing constituencies based on the rural population of each district as per the latest Census 2011. The state has made it clear that natural boundaries and geographical continuity must be considered during ward formation, and care should be taken not to divide existing gram panchayats or tribal settlements wherever possible.
Importantly, the state has also issued a strict confidentiality clause, prohibiting any premature disclosure of the ward structure before the official draft is released. Officers violating this could face disciplinary action.
The entire exercise has been put on a fast track, with a fixed five-phase schedule, so that elections can be held within four months. Citizens are encouraged to participate actively during the feedback phase to ensure transparency and representation. The State Election Commission will supervise the final approval and publication of ward maps before poll dates are announced.

Cong legislators' meeting on June 15 to discuss seats
Patna: Congress has called a meeting of its legislators on June 15 in Patna to discuss its future course of action after the opposition coordination committee meeting on Thursday in which all the INDI Alliance partners have been asked to submit their lists of seats they wanted to contest in the coming assembly elections to RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav , who is the coordination committee chairman. All the Congress MLAs will be present in this meeting to be attended by AICC in charge of Bihar, Krishna Allavaru, state party president Rajesh Kumar and other senior leaders. Sources said the Congress legislators will be given responsibilities on the instructions of party leader Rahul Gandhi, who is making efforts to revive and strengthen the party at the grassroots level for the Bihar assembly elections due this year. The meeting assumes significance in the backdrop of the bickering among the alliance partners over the number of seats being demanded by them. The Communist Party of India (CPI) reportedly complained about its ally CPI(ML) in the meeting after their leader Dipankar Bhattacharya said his party wanted 45 seats to contest. RJD, Congress, CPI, CPM, CPI(ML) and VIP are so far the INDIA bloc partners in Bihar. CPI state general secretary Ram Naresh Pandey told this reporter on Friday that the alliance partners had agreed not to make any statements which could create confusion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트 29만원 이벤트 임플란트 더 알아보기 Undo "Every party will submit its list of seats it wants to contest," he said on way to Bennipatti to attend a party programme in Madhubani. Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) patron Mukesh Sahani raised the seat-sharing issue in the Thursday meeting. VIP spokesperson Dev Jyoti on Friday said the party's state committee had proposed to contest 60 seats. "But Tejashwi will take a final call," he said. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), an alliance partner of RJD in the neighbouring state, has already staked its claim on 12 seats in the bordering districts. Though JMM is not a part of the INDIA bloc in Bihar so far, its spokesman Manoj Pandey on Friday said the party has strong public support in 12 Bihar constituencies. RJD spokesman Shakti Singh Yadav, however, dismissed any rift and said since there is an internal democracy in the alliance, everyone is free to express his opinion. Congress, which contested 70 seats last time and won 19, wants to keep the number intact with a few changes in constituencies. Out of the total 243 seats, RJD contested the maximum 144, Congress 70, CPI(ML) 19, CPI 6 and CPM 4 seats. The CPI(ML) had the best strike rate of winning 12 out of the 19 seats it contested. RJD won 75, Congress 19, and CPI-CPM 2 each in 2020. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Exalogic case: CM Pinarayi Vijayan's replies vague, petitioner tells Kerala HC
Kochi: M R Ajayan, the petitioner seeking a CBI probe into the controversial CMRL-Exalogic case, has filed a counter-affidavit stating that chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan , a respondent in the petition, offered only vague denials and evasive responses to the allegations against him. Ajayan also sought a court-monitored investigation by the CBI into the allegations raised in the petition. He alleged that Exalogic received Rs 1.72 crore from Cochin Minerals and Rutile Ltd (CMRL) as illegal gratification. The petitioner further sought an investigation into the alleged political nexus involving the CM and the companies concerned. In his counter-affidavit, CM Vijayan described the petition as 'politically instigated litigation.' In response, Ajayan asserted that he has no political agenda and seeks no personal gain. The PIL, he said, is based on publicly available records and adjudicated facts, and is aimed at securing an independent investigation in the interest of justice, transparency and the constitutional right to know.
