The former Chief Minister cancelled his second ticket too and booked seat number 2D on flight AI 171 for June 12, which crashed in less than a minute after taking off. CCTV footage from the runway showed the aircraft was airborne for only 32 seconds before crashing into the hostel building of BJ Medical College, which is close to the airport. A huge fireball followed the crash, damaging the hostel building. Several casualties were reported at the medical college, too. '1206' And Mr Rupani's Personal Connect The number '1206' stood for good fortune for Mr Rupani, who used it on his car, scooter and official number plate of his vehicle as Chief Minister. He considered it lucky for him until it wasn't. The former Chief Minister died on June 12 (12/06) in the crash. 12/06, according to friends, family, and party colleagues, was a personal emblem for Mr Rupani. Vijay Rupani's Political Life Mr Rupani served as Gujarat's 16th Chief Minister from August 2016 to September 2021. Born in Rangoon (now Yangon), Burma, in 1956, his family migrated to Rajkot in the 1960s following political instability in Southeast Asia. Over the next three decades, he held a range of administrative and legislative roles, including as minister for transport, water supply, and labour. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012. In 2014, he was appointed as a minister in the Gujarat government, where he served till 2016, followed by taking over as the Chief Minister in the same year, a position he held till 2021 before resigning ahead of the assembly elections as part of the BJP's leadership reset. Mr Rupani remained active in organisational affairs. He held a senior advisory role within the party's Gujarat unit and was frequently consulted on matters related to state policy and elections.

DMK to commence membership drive on June 20

Chennai: The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) will begin its state-wide membership drive on June 20, as part of a major organisational initiative ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin will personally meet party functionaries from all 234 Assembly constituencies as part of the programme titled 'Udanpirappe Vaa'. The initiative was announced by DMK organisation secretary R.S. Bharathi, who confirmed that Stalin plans to complete these constituency-level interactions before the party's annual Mupperum Vizha celebrations scheduled for September 17. Under this programme, Stalin will interact directly with grassroots-level party workers -- excluding district secretaries, whom he will meet separately. The meetings are being held at the party headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, in Chennai. The first session took place on Friday, where Stalin met functionaries from Chidambaram, Villupuram, and Usilampatti constituencies. Sharing a message on X, Stalin wrote, 'To reach out to the people with the achievements of the government, to defeat those who are desperate to bring down Tamil Nadu, and to boost the party's robust structure -- Udanpirappe Vaa.' The Chief Minister is being accompanied during these interactions by a panel that includes R.S. Bharathi, party spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan, joint organisation secretary Anbagam Kalai, and deputy organisation secretaries S. Austin and Thayagam Kavi. Each meeting was originally planned to last five minutes, but several interactions were extended as Stalin engaged actively with the cadre. According to party sources, Stalin came prepared with detailed performance reports of each functionary, which formed the basis for his questions and discussions. He also sought suggestions and feedback to strengthen preparations for the 2026 Assembly polls. In a notable gesture, each participant received a signed copy of Stalin's autobiography 'Ungalil Oruvan' during the meeting. An 'opinion box' has been placed at the venue to collect written feedback from those who wish to share ideas or concerns they were unable to voice during the meeting. 'We will carefully review all the inputs we receive,' Bharathi said. Stalin also reportedly enquired about the level of coordination between local functionaries and district secretaries, indicating a focus on improving intra-party communication. The next round of meetings will resume on June 17. Stalin is expected to be in Thanjavur on June 15 and 16 for official engagements. The DMK president has already urged party cadres to intensify efforts at the grassroots level and ensure that the INDIA bloc secures at least 200 of the 234 Assembly seats in the next state elections.

Stalin seeks rehabilitation for Madrasi Camp families

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin has written to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, raising concern over the 'humanitarian crisis' caused by the demolition of the Madrasi Camp in Jangpura on June 1. The move displaced around 370 Tamil-origin families, many of whom had lived there for decades. DMK MP TR Baalu personally handed over the letter to Gupta on Friday. In the letter, Stalin said that while 189 families were allotted EWS flats in Narela as per the Delhi High Court's order, the homes remain unfit for occupation due to lack of basic amenities like water, sanitation, and power. No transport facilities have been provided, leaving workers—especially women—unemployed and over 150 Tamil-medium children without school access. He also pointed out that 181 families remain entirely homeless. Stalin urged the Delhi government to complete and hand over the flats, provide necessary infrastructure, and relax norms under the Slum & JJ Rehabilitation Policy to support the rest. He requested the immediate setting up of Tamil-medium education facilities and transport. Stalin expressed hope the Delhi administration would respond with compassion and reaffirmed TN's willingness to assist in the dignified rehabilitation of displaced families.
