UK Praises Bahrain's Progressive Policies at House of Lords Event
Bahrain's voice on the global stage was celebrated at the prestigious Bahrain Society's Annual Summer Reception, held at the House of Lords in London, where several prominent British figures praised the Kingdom's enduring friendship with the United Kingdom and its growing reputation as a dynamic and open partner.
The reception took place on the sidelines of the official visit of His Excellency Ahmed bin Salman Al Musallam, the Speaker of Bahrain Parliament, and was attended by senior UK dignitaries, diplomats, and members of the Bahrain Society.
Lord Philip Hammond, former UK Foreign Secretary, commended Bahrain for its consistent advocacy of openness and its push for deepening trade and diplomatic ties with the UK. He acknowledged Bahrain's proactive role in strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in commerce and investment.
Lord Francis Maude, former Senior Cabinet Minister, echoed these sentiments, describing the relationship between Bahrain and the UK as 'strong, deep-rooted, and historic,' stretching back over two centuries of mutual respect and cooperation.
Sir Liam Fox, former Defence Secretary, highlighted the responsiveness and flexibility of Bahrain's economic ecosystem. 'Bahrain is open for business and well-positioned for global partnerships,' he remarked, pointing to the Kingdom's economic reforms and investor-friendly policies.
Lord Tariq Ahmad, former Minister for the Middle East, praised Bahrain's diplomatic finesse and strategic influence in the region. 'Bahrain is an incredible Kingdom on so many fronts,' he said, underscoring its quiet yet impactful approach to international relations and regional stability.

Nearly 8,000 Killed In Syria Within Six Months: Monitor
At least 7,670 people, mainly civilians, have been killed in Syria since the fall of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's government and the establishment of a new transitional authority, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has documented in a new report. According to the war monitor, the number includes more than 2,130 'extrajudicial executions' and 'identity-based killings.' It warned of a 'pattern of organized violence' across the country. The SOHR report documents 'the killing of 7,670 people across Syria from 8 December 2024 to 6 June 2025,' adding that among those killed are '5,784 civilians, including 306 children and 422 women.' SOHR warned that 'this grim toll is a result of ongoing violence and violations by local and external parties, alongside widespread security chaos,' which reflects 'the fragility of the security situation and the increasing danger to the most vulnerable constituents of society.' The over 2,130 executions were 'committed in brutal ways.' In March this year, Syrian government forces carried out a series of brutal massacres targeting Alawite civilians on the Syrian coast. Damascus said it would launch a probe, the results of which have not been made clear. SOHR says '1,726 liquidations' were recorded during the March massacres against Alawites. Unofficial estimates at the time said the number could be way higher, possibly several thousand. The killings were carried out in response to an armed uprising against security forces launched by elements of the former government's armed forces. The UK-based monitor went on to say that since the collapse of the Assad government, 1,886 non-civilian combatants have been killed, including 496 members of the Syrian Defense and Interior Ministries. Additionally, 627 members of various armed factions, many linked to the new authorities in Damascus, were also among those killed. Over 250 members of the US-backed Kurdish militia, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), have been killed as well, according to SOHR. SOHR notes that 75 percent of all the deaths are civilians. The new Syrian army is dominated by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a former Al-Qaeda branch with a history of war crimes and violent, sectarian ideology. Several other extremist factions, including notorious groups such as Jaish al-Islam, have been incorporated into Damascus's forces as well. Alawites continue to be targeted by Syria's military and groups under its command. In the last five days, at least 18 Alawites have been killed in a new wave of violence targeting the minority group. Meanwhile, the country faces a widespread Israeli occupation and regular bombardment. The new SOHR report comes as Syria is being pulled out of years of isolation – with the US, UK, and EU taking steps to lift the sanctions on the country, which had been imposed for 14 years. Bahrain Defence Force Commander Hosts High-Level Meetings and Eid Greetings
Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Commander-in-Chief of the Bahrain Defence Force (BDF), held a series of official meetings on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, with senior government officials and military leaders at the BDF headquarters. In the first meeting, the Commander-in-Chief received His Excellency Lieutenant General Abdullah bin Hassan Al Nuaimi, Minister of Defence Affairs, along with several senior BDF officers. UK Imposes Historic Sanctions On Hardline Israeli Ministers
In a historic shift in UK-Israel relations, Britain is imposing formal sanctions on hardline Israeli ministers Bezalel Smotrich (Finance) and Itamar Ben Gvir (National Security) after months of inflammatory statements about Gaza have caught the world's attention. The sanctions, unveiled Tuesday, are to include asset freezes and travel bans, following similar measures from the governments of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and others. These countries have previously sanctioned various radical Zionist settler groups and individuals, something the US also did under Biden. Ben Gvir has several times called for the 'voluntary emigration' of Gazans, and he along with Smotrich have frequently made statements overtly backing an ethnic cleansing program. 'My right, my wife's, my children's, to roam the roads of Judea and Samaria are more important than the right of movement of the Arabs,' Ben Gvir said for example in 2023 of occupied West Bank areas. Both Israeli ministers have actively supported the most extreme settler groups operating in the West Bank, made up of individuals who call for the removal of Palestinians by force or even death. They've long been involved in movements and political parties who also advocate for the expulsion of all Arabs from Israeli society. According to an Al Jazeera backgrounder: The 47-year-old lawyer and politician has led the far-right party Jewish Power (Otzma Yehudit) since 2019, and was sworn into the cabinet after last year's elections. He was later appointed the national security minister and handed control of Israel's Border Police division in the occupied West Bank. A settler in Kiryat Arba, one of the most radical settlements in the occupied West Bank (all of which are illegal under international law), Ben-Gvir has been convicted of incitement to racism, destroying property, possessing a 'terror' organisation's propaganda material and supporting a 'terror' organization – Meir Kahane's outlawed Kach group, which he joined when he was 16. Ben Gvir responded to the UK's sanctions move later on Tuesday. He expressed 'contempt for the White Paper' – characterizing it as akin to the 1939 UK policy paper limiting Jewish immigration to British-administered 'Mandatory Palestine'. 'We survived Pharaoh, we will also survive Keir Starmer,' he said. 'I will continue to work for Israel and the people of Israel without fear or intimidation!' At a dedication ceremony for a new settlement near Hebron, Smotrich, Ben Gvir said that 'Britain has already tried once to prevent us from settling the cradle of our homeland and we will not allow it to do so again.' He emphasized in front of settler groups, 'We are determined to continue building.' But ironically many of the same Western governments now sanctioning the two Israeli officials have long supplied heavy weapons to the Israeli military. These governments still remain a party to one side of this war which has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians, and utter decimation of the Gaza Strip in the wake of the Oct.7, 2023 Hamas terror attacks, but there appears no peaceful solution on the horizon.
