Cookbook author Martha Stewart shares clever tip to remove garlic smell from your fingers; we find out if it works

Indian Express2 days ago
Garlic adds incredible flavour to food, yes, but the lingering smell it leaves behind on your hands can be highly unappealing. Popular American cookbook author Martha Stewart seems to have an easy hack up her sleeve: rub your hands on stainless steel under warm water to neutralise the odor!
'Hold a stainless steel knife under running warm water and rub your fingers along the blunt side. The oxide layer on the steel reacts with sulfur compounds in garlic, which makes it cling to the surface of the steel knife instead of your fingers,' she shared in a video.
But this this super simple hack work?
According to Executive Sous Chef Kalil from DoubleTree by Hilton Whitefield Bengaluru, it does! And just in case you are terrified of sharp objects such as blades and knives, he also shared a few more kitchen-tested remedies:
Create a paste using salt and baking soda with a little water. Scrub your hands and rinse with soapy water — the baking soda deodorizes while salt exfoliates. Simply moisten your hands a bit, and the salt particles will cling to your palms and fingers. This way, when you rub them and then rinse them with water, the smell automatically disappears.
Coffee grounds also work well to mask and absorb the odor. For a quick fix, you can also try a minty mouthwash or a scented hand sanitizer. 'Just like salt, you can rub some coffee beans or powdered coffee on your hands to get rid of the smell. This can mask the smell of any pungent-smelling food item. Later, you can wash your hands with soap and water,' he said,
Just like toothpaste works for your teeth, it can also remove the smell of certain foods from your hands. Simply apply a small amount to your palm, rub it in gently, and then rinse it off with water. Make sure you use the basic white one, and not anything that comes in the form of a gel, because that will not be very helpful.
And at times, lemons can also come in handy. Citrus fruits have a pleasant smell which is equally strong. So, all you have to do is cut a lemon in half and rub it on your hands, or better yet, make juice and apply it evenly on your fingers and palms. It will absorb any and all kinds of odour, leaving behind a nice smell.
Don't let the smell turn you off completely, though! Garlic comes with a bunch of health benefits.
Dr Anjali Tiwari, dietician, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Kanpur. 'Garlic is rich in bioactive compounds such as allicin, sulfur, and antioxidants, which contribute to its numerous health benefits. Regular consumption has been shown to lower cholesterol levels, reduce triglycerides, and improve overall heart health by preventing plaque buildup in arteries,' said Dr Tiwari.
Garlic also possesses natural antimicrobial and antiviral properties, effectively supporting the immune system and combating infections. Due to its vasodilatory effects, studies suggest that garlic consumption may help regulate blood pressure. Its antioxidants play a role in neutralising free radicals, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases like cancer and neurodegenerative conditions, she explained.
'It is highly beneficial as it helps manage cholesterol, regulate blood pressure, and reduce the risk of liver diseases. Its sulfur compounds play a key role in detoxifying the body. Rich in allicin, it offers significant nutritional value, helps reduce inflammation, and lowers cholesterol levels. Additionally, it acts as a natural antibiotic and may aid in cancer prevention,' said Dr Tiwari.

As dengue cases rise, health dept holds house survey, awareness drives

1 2 Jamshedpur/Ranchi: With the number of dengue cases touching 34 in the Jamshedpur urban circle, the East Singhbhum health department officials said they were focusing on door-to-door campaigns to detect dengue larvae and generate awareness among the residents to curb the spread of the vector-borne disease. In Ranchi, too, the health department intensified surveillance to monitor mosquito breeding and prevent the outbreak of dengue. Between June and August 14, a total of 5,639 houses were inspected, out of which 876 were found to be breeding mosquitoes. Similarly, 39,058 containers were checked, and 1,154 were reported positive for larvae. No dengue cases were reported at the sadar hospital. On August 16, a special surveillance was carried out at Nijam Nagar and Hindpiri, where 20,025 houses were inspected. Out of these, five houses were found to have breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Additionally, 115 containers were examined, with 405 showing larval presence. State programme officer of vector-borne diseases, Dr Birendra Kumar Singh, said, "Inspections are critical in breaking the mosquito breeding cycle. Citizens have been urged to maintain cleanliness in and around their homes, regularly check water containers, and cooperate with the field staff to curb the spread of dengue." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo East Singhbhum civil surgeon Dr Sahir Pall said, "We are focusing on mass awareness on do's and don'ts to eliminate the root cause of dengue. School and college students will be involved in awareness drive." The strength of teams of the multi-purpose workers (MPW) will be increased for the door-to-door detection of dengue larvae. Dengue larvae were detected in over 13,000 houses in August. "We will review the progress of the survey work and, accordingly, increase the number of MPW teams," Pall said. Dengue cases this year have been reported mostly from the suburban Chota Govindpur, while the core urban circle has reported comparatively fewer cases. The dengue data as of August 15 suggested that 860 samples were tested, out of which 36 cases were positive, including two cases from outside the district. Five dengue patients are undergoing treatment at a hospital. Chota Govindpur has reported 18 cases, while Telco and Mango are registering four and three cases. Additionally, single cases have been reported from seven different areas of the town. The civil surgeon said that all hospitals have been instructed to ensure that blood samples of suspected dengue cases are referred to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme centre at the earliest. "The sooner the laboratory test of the sample is done, and if the report is confirmed positive, swift follow-up can be taken up both at the medication level and in the field," Pall added. Under its action programme, the 100-meter radius surrounding the house of the infected person will be swiftly covered, and house surveys and anti-larval activities will be taken up urgently. Tata Steel Utility and Infrastructure Services Ltd (TSUISL), along with Tata Motors, Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC), Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) and Jugsalai Municipal Council (JMC), are carrying out garbage cleaning work and following it up with anti-larval activity daily in their respective command limits. Gorakhpur has access to best of healthcare, med expense coverage: Yogi

1 2 Gorakhpur: High-end super specialty healthcare is accessible in Gorakhpur and Ayushman Bharat and Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana are ensuring coverage of medical expenses up to Rs 5 lakh. This was stated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who inaugurated a state-of-the-art private hospital on Medical College road in the city, on Sunday. He assured citizens that if additional assistance was needed, the CM Relief Fund and contributions from legislators' funds would be extended. "Last year, Rs 1,100 crore was provided under the CM Relief Fund for medical treatment," said Yogi. He also launched the hospital's patient-care mobile app 'Regency MyCare' and inspected the newly inaugurated facilities. Yogi pointed out that just a decade ago, eastern UP's healthcare system was in a "dismal" state, BRD Medical College being the lone major hospital, struggling to provide treatment to the needy. "Today, BRD has been upgraded, AIIMS Gorakhpur is functional, and several new medical colleges have come up in districts like Basti, Deoria, Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj, Jaunpur, and others. Soon, Ballia will also have its own medical college," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 1 Reason to Read The 5 Books American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends For Turning Your Life... Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Highlighting significance of the new 250-bed multi-super specialty hospital with an 80-bed ICU, Yogi termed it a "major achievement" for eastern UP, western Bihar and even neighboring Nepal. He lauded the Regency Hospital's contribution in Kanpur and praised local partner Tanmay Modi for bringing the chain to Gorakhpur. Stressing "healthy competition" in healthcare sector, Yogi cited the model of Guru Gorakhnath Hospital, which had pioneered ICU and dialysis services in the region over two decades ago. He said new institutions must strive to deliver upgraded models of care. MP Ravi Kishan said that during SP govt in state, people were left struggling with encephalitis and BRD medical college was in a bad state but now there was AIIMS and several other hospitals in the district and around 7-8 crore population of nearby districts, Bihar and Nepal depended on Gorakhpur for healthcare. The hospital group's chairman and MD Dr Atul Kapoor said the facility would also create employment for about 900 locals. MLA Mahendra Pal Singh, MP Jagdambika Pal, mayor Dr Manglesh Srivastava and other dignitaries. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). PACS secys on sick leave make Thailand trip, suspended

Bhubaneswar: It seems the secretaries of six primary agriculture cooperative societies (PACS) in Boudh and Sonepur districts took the phrase 'sick of work' a bit too literally! Who knew that the best cure for a mysterious illness was a dose of vitamin sea in Thailand? The lure of sun, sea and sand was so strong that it allegedly pulled them out of the sick bed and into the beach getaway. While their official records showed them battling imaginary ailments, their social media photographs showed them busy battling the waves in Phuket and Pattaya. The govt, however, wasn't too thrilled about their impromptu beach therapy session. They swung into action, suspending three of the secretaries and serving show-cause notices to the others. "Upon inquiry, we found that Manjay Dharua, Dhaneswar Sahoo and Arun Pujhari, secretaries of PACS at Lachhipur, Mayurudan and Rengali in Sonepur district, were absent from Aug 8-11. It was found that they were vacationing in Thailand after having taken sick leave. They were suspended on Aug 12," Nruparaj Sahu, district collector of Sonepur, said on Sunday. Govt sources said these six PACS secretaries, along with a senior official from the registrar of cooperative society in Boudh district, had gone on a trip to Thailand from Aug 8-11 which was sponsored by a private fertiliser manufacturing company. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "The PACS secretaries were expected to be present during the crucial farming period. Their responsibilities include overseeing farmer registration and managing the distribution of fertilisers, which are vital to the agricultural community during this period of time," explained an official of the state cooperation department. PACS play a vital role in paddy procurement and the supply of seeds, fertilisers and agricultural equipment to farmers. Their absence during this period left many farmers without access to essential resources. Girish Chandra Purohit, Boudh district registrar of cooperative societies (DRCS), confirmed that three PACS secretaries from the district had joined their suspended colleagues from Sonepur on the Thailand trip, and have been issued show-cause notices. "I, too, had accompanied the six PACS secretaries to Thailand from Aug 8-11. Three secretaries from our district have received show-cause notices. I am also under departmental inquiry, although I had obtained prior permission for the trip," Purohit told TOI. Rajesh Prabhakar Patil, secretary of the state cooperation department, said the investigation is ongoing. "We are taking action against those found guilty of dereliction of duty," Patil said.
