Assam govt., not Adani acquiring land near Guwahati airport: CM Himanta
The government aims to secure land from genuine investors who want to sell their land, and residents will not be evicted, Mr. Sarma assured at a press conference.
''This move has been initiated by the state government to safeguard the land for the people of Assam, and we plan to take up three specific projects in the area,'' he said.
These include a state-of-the-art stadium to promote Assam's concert economy, a convention centre on the lines of the Bharat Mandapam and an entertainment zone or amusement park on the lines of Universal Studios, but not on such a big scale, he added.
''All these projects will be fully planned and implemented by the State government and not by any industrial house'', he said.
Appeal to media
He urged the media not to mislead the public, as ''we have seen recently that certain media houses are claiming that the State government is handing over land to Adani or Ambani''.
''If these industrial houses come to Assam, we will welcome them with garlands and open arms, but they are not coming here for every project,'' he added.
Flagship scheme for women
The CM also announced that the third edition of the State's flagship Orunodoi scheme, catering to women beneficiaries, will be launched on September 17, coinciding with the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will cover 40 lakh beneficiaries in the state.
Mr. Sarma said the Orunodoi scheme was first introduced in the 2019 budget, followed by Orunodoi 2.0 after the formation of the current government, which benefited 28 lakh people, and was closed this July.
In Orunodoi 3.0, all beneficiaries have been linked with Aadhaar and will receive ₹1,250 each. As part of the rollout, elected panchayat representatives and district administration officials will visit each beneficiary in August to present them with a book and a letter from the Chief Minister stating that they have been selected for the scheme, he added.
Mr. Sarma also announced a new initiative — Orunodoi Plus — which will be rolled out as a pilot project starting January 2026 for four months. Under this, eligible beneficiaries who purchase LPG cylinders will receive an additional ₹250 subsidy.
"A form for LPG connection will also be provided with the letter, and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) will inform the State government when the beneficiary buys gas. The ₹250 will be directly credited to their bank account," he said.
"We are launching the scheme initially for four months to test coordination among the agencies. If it works, we will scale it up," he added.
Mr. Sarma also announced the launch of the second edition of the 'Nijut Moina' scheme, providing financial support to eligible girl students for higher studies so that they do not drop out of school and become victims of child marriage.
The forms will be distributed to eligible girl students from August 6, he said.
Residents of Assam studying in central universities like Tezpur and Assam University will also be covered under the scheme.
The scheme was launched in October last year to provide financial assistance to girl students from higher secondary to post-graduate level in government and government-aided institutions, as most girls drop out of schools after class 10, and parents then marry them off.

Assam to launch portal for indigenous people to seek arms licences
Two months after the Assam Cabinet approved a scheme to issue arms licences to 'indigenous people' in parts of the state where their 'population is in the minority,' Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced Wednesday that the government will soon roll out an online portal where eligible people can apply for the licences. When the Cabinet decision was announced in May, Sarma had named districts where Bengali-origin Muslims account for majority, such as Dhubri, Morigaon, Nagaon, Barpeta and South Salmara, and said that 'indigenous people are in minority' in these areas and often 'have to confront the question of their security.' On Wednesday, he announced on social media that the government is in the process of rolling out a dedicated portal where 'indigenous people, who perceive threat to their lives and reside in sensitive areas' can apply for arms licences. He announced three key eligibility criteria for the issue of arms licences under this scheme: that the applicant has to be an 'original inhabitant or indigenous citizen of Assam,' they must 'perceive a genuine threat to life and safety due to the vulnerability of the area of residence,' and that they must 'reside in a vulnerable or remote area, as notified by the District Administration, or assessed as such by authorized security agencies.' He also said the applicantions would be subject to a security assessment, verification and vetting and that once issued, the licences would be subject to periodic review and 'monitoring and reporting.' This portal is likely to be rolled out this month and this comes at a time when vigilantes, particularly those of a group called Bir Lachit Sena, have been issuing ultimatums to Bengali-Muslims living in different parts of Upper Assam in the past few days, giving calls for 'all Bangladeshis to leave Upper Assam within seven days.'

‘Speed up decision on database of fake rape complaints'
New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked Delhi Police and state govt to expeditiously decide a plea that wants a database of those who file multiple fake complaints of sexual offences, much along the lines of a sex offenders registry. A bench comprising Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela was hearing a PIL that sought its intervention in the form of directions to the police to make people aware of women who repeatedly file fake rape cases. Though declining to issue any directions, the court pointed out that the petitioner had already raised the issue by making a representation to Delhi Police and other authorities and the same should be decided by the authorities in a time bound manner. On the petitioner's request to pass a direction to the authorities concerned to maintain the database, the court said, it was the authorities' domain and "they know better how the policing is to be done" refusing to pass specific directions. "Without expressing any merit on the issues raised, the petition is disposed of with the direction to the authorities to take an informed decision on the petitioner's representation with expedition. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Magnesium Deficiency Causes Heart Attacks! It was hearing a PIL by one Shonee Kapoor seeking a direction to the govt and Delhi Police to maintain a database at each police district headquarter "regarding the complainants who have registered more than one complaint of allegation of rape or sexual offences and mandatorily take the identity card—preferably Aadhaar card—from the complainants." The plea alleged a rampant misuse of the rape laws at the instance of a few complainants and highlighted that even courts have been forced to express concern about such fake cases.
