Maresca explains Conference League call which left Chelsea star 'devastated'

Daily Mirror2 days ago

Chelsea captain Reece James ended the night with the Europa Conference League trophy in his grasp but the defender was disappointed not start against Real Betis
Reece James lifted the Europa Conference League trophy on a historic night for Chelsea in Poland - but Enzo Maresca admitted it was tough to leave his 'devastated' captain out of the starting XI against Real Betis.
James, 25, was introduced from the bench at half-time with Chelsea trailing 1-0; they went on to produce a rousing second half fightback to win the game 4-1, becoming the only team in history to win all four of Uefa's major honours in the process.

The Blues captain has endured more than his fair of injury issues and, after playing in Chelsea's final Premier League game of the season on Sunday, started on the bench. And after lifting the club's latest trophy, James conceded he was disappointed to not have started the game.

"Of course it is devastating to know you are not starting in a final," he told TNT Sports when he was asked how he took the news.
"I want to play every game but it was the manager's decision. Once he made the decision, I had to move on and accept it and be ready when I was needed."
Maresca was asked about James' omission by Joe Cole and the Italian made it clear how highly he values the right-back, implying that extra care is being taken with the Chelsea academy graduate due to his injury record.

He replied: 'Joe, I promise you I would start Reece James every game but we are trying to protect him. We are trying to manage him, he is like Cole [Palmer] for us.'
Maresca earned plenty of plaudits from the TNT Sports pundits for the way his second half substitutions changed the game after a disappointing start to the evening.

He said of the performance: "I am very happy. I was a little bit frustrated in the first half because I think we approached the game in the wrong way. Also I expected a little bit, the happiness was a bit too much after Nottingham Forest because you go all season waiting and waiting [to achieve Champions League ]. So we struggled a bit first half, second half we were much better and now we are very happy.
"The message after Nottingham Forest was, 'Guys if we want to be an important team then what we have done is done and we have to win the final.' But it's the happiness, the tiredness because we had 48 hours less than them, they played on Friday for nothing, we played on Sunday for a big, big target. So I expected it a little bit.
"In the second half we played much better."

Diaz in line for Liverpool reunion as Al-Nassr make final Ronaldo decision

Luis Diaz has a decision to make over his future with Liverpool and there could potentially be interest from Saudi Arabia in a move that will see him link up with a former Reds star Al-Nassr have not dropped their interest in Liverpool star Luis Diaz, with the Colombian earmarked for a future move. The winger has long been linked with a switch to Saudi Arabia and they continue to be monitoring developments over his future. Diaz, 28, has just two years remaining on his contract at Anfield meaning Liverpool are running out of time to earn a considerable fee for his services should they choose to sell. While they are keen to keep him, no conversations over a renewed deal have taken place as of yet - something Al-Nassr could yet take advantage of . ‌ According to The Telegraph, Saudi chiefs remain interested in him and would like to make a move regardless of if Cristiano Ronaldo leaves the club. The Portuguese superstar is out of contract this summer, albeit there is hope that he will extend his stay. ‌ Taking to Instagram recently, the former Manchester United star wrote: 'This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all.' Meanwhile, Diaz would also become teammates with former Liverpool star Sadio Mane once again, the pair having shared the dressing room for six months at Anfield. Diaz has already given an insight into his mindset ahead of the summer transfer window. He said: "I'm really happy and I have been like this since the first day I arrived. I've always been very calm and I have really just been enjoying the football played by this great team, being a part of this. ‌ 'We will be talking, the talk about it (his future) will happen. For me, I'd stay for as long as possible. It also depends on the club, it all depends on the details. They're all details that are sorted out separately. But I am very calm, very happy and I am enjoying the Premier League." Away from Al-Nassr, Spanish giants Barcelona remain interested in Diaz, with the wideman's Dad admitting a move to the Camp Nou would be a 'dream'. He said: 'It is true that Luis is a loyal Barcelona supporter and that it would be his dream if he arrived at Barcelona. But, until this moment, thank Porto and Liverpool for the welcome with Luis and the way they received him. ‌ 'He is a player who has an easy time earning things because of his way of being, his humility, his work. He gives himself, he is a very disciplined player – thank God. 'If there are chances for Lucho to arrive at Barcelona, he would have no problem. Because it is an elite team and is among the first in the world.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Luis Enrique hopes ‘very difficult journey' to CL final ends with glory for PSG

PSG will contest their second European final when they face Inter Milan at Allianz Arena and aim to go one better than in the 2020 loss to Bayern Munich. Champions League success has been the holy grail for PSG's owners Qatar Sports Investment since they acquired a majority share in 2011, but Luis Enrique's team were in dangerous of a league-phase exit after a run of three defeats in four. A 4-2 win over Manchester City in January revitalised their campaign and after tricky knockout ties with Brest, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal were navigated, Ligue 1 champions PSG enter this final with 28 wins from the 34 fixtures they have played in 2025. Luis Enrique, a winner in this competition with Barcelona a decade ago, plans a repeat against 2023 runners-up Inter. 'What I tried to transmit to the players is that we have been on a very difficult journey,' Luis Enrique told a press conference. 'We have had to play in top-level games since the start of the Champions League. The fact that it was hard at the start could be an advantage for us now because we are used to playing in these games. 'We played in the stadium against Munich, a team that is one of the best in Europe and we played in finals before. We are ready. We have not been scared at all this season so we are going to take to the pitch at our best tomorrow. 'I have more experience now from the last few years. I try to transmit to my team and my players the importance of playing in the Champions League final and the chance to make history. When does it start? 😬 — Paris Saint-Germain (@PSG_English) May 30, 2025 'Making history means doing something that nobody has ever done before you at a club like Paris St Germain, so that is very important and it needs to be managed carefully so that it doesn't overwhelm us. 'I have the loved the way we have looked at training. Inter don't have any doubts either and it will be a brilliant final that we want to win.' PSG captain Marquinhos featured in the 2020 loss to Bayern, which occurred behind closed doors due to coronavirus restrictions. Marquinhos has shared a dressing room with superstars Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, but expressed his love for this current group. He said: 'I have played in so many teams over the years here, but we are certainly enjoying it here on a daily basis and in every match. 'You can see the way we all run together, how we understand one another on the pitch, so there is the influence in our results. I am in love with this team, with everything we do on the pitch for one another and it is a pleasure to be a part of it. 'It is a great opportunity tomorrow to make history here as a club and for all the players here. It is a second opportunity for me to play in the Champions League final and I don't want to let if pass me by.' 🎙️ Ousmane Dembélé: "I'm very proud to be here in the final. Nothing has been easy. It's just a pleasure to be at this stage of the competition."#UCLfinal — Paris Saint-Germain (@PSG_English) May 30, 2025 Ousmane Dembele has enjoyed an extraordinary campaign with 33 goals to become one of the favourites for the Ballon d'Or, but played down its significance. 'When you are a player at Paris St Germain, the most important thing is to win the Champions League. I am focused on the team and not on individual accolades,' Dembele insisted. 'I am pleased with what we have done since January. We have changed our mentality and we are going to try to keep it going and go all the way.'
