Revanna, now known as Prisoner No. 15528, occupies a cell in the convicts' section of Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, Bengaluru, and is expected to live on a monthly wage of no more than Rs 540—a far cry from his basic salary of Rs 1.2 lakh a month plus various allowances and the standard pay given to convicts who work six days a week in eight-hour shifts. According to the Times of India, Revanna, who was convicted in a high-profile rape case, has not been assigned any work yet and has time until Monday to decide how he will spend his time behind bars. A senior prison official quoted in the report said new convicts usually start with basic unskilled labour such as assisting in the bakery or stitching clothes. The suspended Janata Dal (Secular) leader was awarded life imprisonment in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases registered against him by a Special Court for People's Representatives in Bengaluru. Revanna, the grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, sought leniency as the punishment was announced, claiming he did nothing wrong and his only mistake was his 'fast growth" in politics. The case pertains to a 48-year-old woman who was working as a domestic help at the family's Gannikada farmhouse in Hassan district's Holenarasipura. She was allegedly raped twice in 2021 and the act recorded by the accused on his mobile phone. He is the prime accused in four criminal cases filed last year, after over 2,000 obscene video clips, allegedly depicting the sexual abuse of multiple women, surfaced on social media. As the allegations were revealed, the survivor was allegedly abducted at the behest of Revanna's parents to prevent her from testifying against their son. Later, she was rescued from a farmhouse as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) swung into action to probe the case. As he faced criticism, Revanna fled to Germany soon after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, he was arrested when he returned to India on May 31, 2024. He has been in jail since. Age verification likely in all criminal cases
Kochi: The state is considering a proposal to make age verification a mandatory step in all criminal investigations, regardless of whether there is any doubt about the accused's age. The suggestion, submitted by the directorate of prosecution to the state police chief, is currently under examination. Currently, age verification is carried out only when there is suspicion or dispute regarding the age of the accused. The proposed change seeks to avoid future miscarriages of justice by ensuring the correct legal process is followed for juveniles. The proposal follows a shocking revelation in July 2024: Two brothers had spent 13 years in prison for a crime they committed as juveniles. In 2010, the Thodupuzha sessions court sentenced the brothers and their parents to life imprisonment for the 2004 Palaniswamy murder in Idukki. The high court later upheld the verdict. However, it was later discovered that the brothers were 17 years, 11 months, and 11 days, and 17 years and 10 days old at the time of the crime—making them legally juveniles. A division bench of the high court ultimately ordered their release. Beyond this case, the state is under pressure to address bottlenecks in its criminal investigation system, highlighted by a recent HC directive. The court pointed to serious issues including delays in forensic reports, substandard crime scene documentation and lackadaisical investigations. A major concern is the backlog in forensic science laboratories (FSLs), which could take up to seven years to clear. The delays are largely due to a shortage of scientific staff. Although 90 new posts were recently approved, this is seen as inadequate. Financial limitations continue to stall further recruitment. Additionally, FSLs are overwhelmed by the volume of specimens sent in for testing—sometimes over 100 in a single case. Due to time and resource constraints, labs often prioritise only the most crucial reports needed for trial, which has, in some instances, led to failures in court. However, in high-profile cases—such as the Vismaya case, the Uthra murder and the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in Aluva—out-of-turn processing has allowed for faster trials. The HC also criticised the practice of assigning crime scene sketching to village officers, who often lack forensic training. This can result in missed or undocumented evidence. Director general of prosecution T A Shaji suggested addressing this by training police officers in sketch preparation, assisted by village officers and amending legal procedures. He also noted that videotaping of crime scenes is increasingly being adopted, though many current appeals concern cases from before such practices were introduced. As officers attempted to escort him away, his associates intervened, pulling him back and engaging in a brief scuffle with the police. The confrontation intensified when members of the crowd began pelting stones at the police, forcing authorities to use mild force to disperse the protesters and restore order. Roat later blamed BJP for instigating the protest. "Those behind this disruption are connected to the BJP organisation," he said, accusing the opposition party of exploiting internal divisions within the tribal community for political gain.
