Stephen Mulhern broke down in first TV show since death of his dad Christopher

Daily Record23-05-2025

Stephen Mulhern has opened up about his upcoming ITV documentary special The Accidental Tourist
Stephen Mulhern has revealed that he cried in his first TV show following the death of his dad, Christopher.
The 48-year-old presenter is known for appearing on Britain's Got More Talent, Saturday Night Takeaway, Dancing on Ice, In for a Penny and Catchphrase.

Now, viewers will see a more emotional side to Stephen in the upcoming ITV special, The Accidental Tourist, which will air later this year.

The one-off documentary sees Ant and Dec send Stephen to somewhere he has never been before, in an effort to help test his resolve and push his boundaries.
Stephen arrives in South Korea, where he will encounter epic locations, exotic cultures and cuisines, incredible people and places, and exhilarating activities he would never have chosen for himself.
The show was filmed just after Stephen's dad, Christopher, passed away last year. Speaking to the Mirror, Stephen opened up about the raw emotions he felt at the time, saying: "No one's ever seen me cry on the telly.
"But it was quite nice to not be behind a format, I've never done that. You're going to see behind the razzle-dazzle, if you like. People have thankfully seen me on TV for nearly 25 years, but they may go, 'Well, what's he like at home? Is he going out with someone?'
"I'm at the very centre of this, and it's scary. They film and they film and they film and they just get everything. I think what you're going to see is a lot of emotion. You'll see me totally out of my comfort zone."

It reportedly took ITV bosses over three years to persuade Stephen to take part in the show, with the star now revealing that he is "gutted" that his father won't be able to see how his adventures panned out.
"My dad had just passed away, so that's the only thing. I'm gutted that he didn't see it," he said."

The Accidental Tourist has been compared to the hit Sky travel series, An Idiot Abroad, which saw comedians Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant make their friend Karl Pilkington travel around the globe, while monitoring his progress from the UK.
Addressing the comparisons, Stephen explained: "The difference is that I got very emotional because of the timing.

"I'm not very worldly. I don't travel a lot. And my body's been used to eating plain food."
The star continued: "The food was just horrific, we'd try things like octopus, fish, penis, something they dug out the very bottom of the sea and like a worm that's wriggling, but when you squeeze it squirts water.
"When I came back, I couldn't eat for two and a half weeks. I literally couldn't stomach anything - I lost half a stone."
The experience was so challenging that Stephen nearly quit halfway through, but managed to continue filming.
On whether he'd do it again, Stephen candidly said: "The answer is, I don't know."

As reported by OK!, the performer detailed a particularly tough period for Jane came in 2002, at a time when she was enjoying the height of her early fame and living in Florida with her second husband and manager Henrik Brixen. Despite previous years of sell-out performances, including shows in Las Vegas, and the anticipation of a new album and a BBC documentary, Jane found herself penniless. Article continues below This financial crisis led to the end of their five-year marriage and saw Jane returning to Wakefield at the age of 40 to start over, moving back in with her mother. She reflected: "I've had a few sticky moments and I've taken a lot of risks in my life, but I don't do fear any more". She then added: "I've been there, I've seen it, I've done it. I've got the T-shirt, I've washed it, I've dried it and then I've got another. ‌ "[Back then] I thought, 'I've had a chance at this [career] and it's gone, but I'll get it back.'". Jane faced her fair share of challenges but remained unaffected, reviving her presenting role on Loose Women from 2004 and rekindled her love for music. By 2010 she was gracing the stage of the London Palladium once more, and the following year she was topping the bill on her own tour. ‌ Jane McDonald returns to host at The Hackney Empire in London for The British Soap Awards 2025 (Image: ITV ) Later branching out into television with her successful series, Cruising With Jane McDonald, which took home a Bafta in 2018, and Jane McDonald And Friends, Jane climbed to new professional peaks, and post a 45-date cruise tour, she was looking forward to a tranquil retirement alongside her partner Eddie. Yet, the end of 2018 brought the devastating news of her mother Jean's death, closely followed by the "sudden and shocking" loss of Eddie, marking a time of sorrow. ‌ Jane spoke of this tough phase in her life, acknowledging: "The two guiding lights in my life were Ed and my mother and I suppose losing both of them so quickly together was the hardest thing I've ever been through. "But I've joined a club of so many people who were in my position. I say to anybody now, 'Don't wallow for too long.'". "[Grief] takes a while and it will creep up on you when you least expect it, but if you can chase joy as much as you can, it's allowed. You don't have to feel guilt if you're laughing. Because we do. ‌ "We think, 'I can't possibly feel happy because I've lost them,' but we have to live the life that they wanted for us. Otherwise, what was the point?". "So I've taken every bit of wisdom from my mother - and she had lots of it - and all the love and all that fantastic relationship I had with Ed and I celebrate it now, I take them with me. "It's a way of accepting that you cannot change what's happened, but taking all that with you and moving forward. ‌ "Not moving on, because that means you're leaving them behind, but moving forward with them in your heart." After experiencing numerous highs and lows, including seeking help from a PTSD specialist due to difficulties in facing daily life, Jane did not find solace in writing about her past errors and recent sorrows. She confessed: "I didn't find it cathartic at all. I thought it was awful. I hated every minute of it because I'm not good at going back. I'm really not good at going back. ‌ Jane with her late fiancé Eddie (Image: Dave) "I'm really not good at saying, 'Oh, I failed at that and I failed at this.' But I suppose what is good is that I can say I did fail massively at this, but this is what I did to get out of it. "My world fell apart so many times, but this is what I did instead. I really hope it's going to help others, especially those coming into the industry." ‌ Jane recognised that grief had deeply changed her, but it also provided her with a new perspective on life. "It changes who you are," she mused. "It changes your life. It changes your plans. It robs you of every future you planned. But now I've got a different future and I intend to make it the best I possibly can. "I'm at that pace now where I'm 110 miles an hour, but I intend to slow down because life's gone like that [clicks her fingers]. You know, it's a big shock, losing Ed as quickly as I did, and it made me think, 'How many summers have I got left?'. Article continues below "I want a house by the sea, I want to sit on a deck and watch the waves, or go for a walk on a beach, or sit with a scarf around me and drink a cup of tea. I want all of that. I've now got this chance to have an amazing life with Ed in [my heart] and I intend to do that." You can watch The British Soap Awards 2025 on ITV1 and ITVX at 8pm on Thursday evening, June 5.

Orlando Bloom wants to ‘get the band back together' for Pirates Of The Caribbean

The 48-year-old, who plays Will Turner in the Disney film franchise, told ITV's This Morning there is a chance the cast could reunite for a new instalment. Asked if more Pirates Of The Caribbean features are possible, he said: 'Well, I don't know, I can't say anything at the moment because I really don't know, but there's definitely availability. 'I think they're trying to work out what it would all look like, I personally think it'd be great to get the band back together, that would be great, but there are always different ideas, and so we'll see where it lands.' Bloom also spoke about his latest film Deep Cover, which will be released on June 12, saying he took inspiration from Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher when constructing his character. A post shared by This Morning (@thismorning) The Kent-born actor said: 'When I read in the script that (his character) was a northern I was like, 'who's the iconic northerner that I know?'. 'Growing up I went to Knebworth and seeing Liam and the boys, the whole band, but Liam, he's just got that swag, hasn't he? 'I thought if I can get even close to that, I'd have a lot of fun trying, and it sort of lent itself, and I kind of imagined that (he) was sort of this desperate, out of work actor, maybe he worked at like a costume house or something. 'So he'd get really into the costume and what he was wearing, and the Liam look and everything, so it was a really great way into the character, and I had a lot of fun with it.' The Pirates Of The Caribbean series has seen five feature films: The Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003); Dead Man's Chest (2006); At World's End (2007); On Stranger Tides (2011); and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017); along with the short film Pirates Of The Caribbean: Tales Of The Code: Wedlocked (2011). The series is based on the Disneyland attraction of the same name, and follows the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp. It has also spawned a number of video games.

Amanda Holden 'goes naked' on radio after BGT dress Ofcom complaints

Amanda Holden took to the airwaves on Thursday morning alongside pal Jamie Theakston and appeared to be naked for their breakfast morning show on Heart FM Amanda Holden seemingly shunned any Ofcom complaints by appearing to be naked on air. The Britain's Got Talent judge's outfit on the ITV talent show's finale was criticised by some viewers, but she was clearly unfazed. She appears to have ignored any negative views - and looked to be completely nude on Heart FM's Breakfast Show's live stream. Her appearance even made her co-host Jamie Theakston do a double take. ‌ As she sat in her DJ chair on Thursday morning, she said on air: "Good morning, Mr Theakston. It is 6.30am and I've just caught myself on the camera and don't you think I look naked this morning? Sat behind here?" ‌ Jamie seemed to stumble in his response, replying: "Do you know what... You are wearing clothes, aren't you?" His comments amused his pal and co-host. She laughed as she said back: "I just looked and went, 'What? Have I forgotten to put my clothes on?'" The camera angle made it look like the 54-year-old had no clothes on, with only a chunky pearl necklace visible. She was, however, also wearing a pale pink strapless dress and was photographed outside of the London studios. As well as Amanda's BGT finale dress complaints following Saturday's show, fellow judge Alesha Dixon's attire was also criticised. The duo, alongside Simon Cowell and Bruno Tonioli, watched on as the public voted for magician Harry Moulding as their winner. In total, the female judges' outfits received 72 complaints to Ofcom. When contacted by the Mirror, Ofcom said they had received the complaints from viewers, who alleged the star's frocks were "too revealing for a family show". ‌ Amanda had stunned in her final outfit for the ITV talent competition after vowing to never tone down her fashion choices. It came after she had received a number of criticisms since the series started. She made sure to pull out all the stops for the star-studded finale, opting for a braless, plunging custom-made white silk gown from Saint Hendrix. She wore her hair slicked back into a bun with several bejewelled clips. ‌ Alesha meanwhile, turned heads in a sequin-strewn see-through jump suit, which revealed her underwear. It's far from the first time the pair's looks have been complained about on the show. In July 2017, Amanda wore a plunging see-through Julien Macdonald dress. It went on to be the most complained about TV moment of the year. The mum-of-two joked the incident was a 'national crisis' at the time. She teased in Closer magazine: "I'm always asked about the Ofcom complaints, but every outfit on the show is checked before I leave my dressing room, so I'm never worried. I think people should have fun with fashion!" She went on: "I had bits of fish wire underneath my breasts trying to hold that together... It's all quite laughable, but all everyone seems to talk about. It's been called another national crisis – but, oh no, I will not be covered up."
