‘VTR is Dead': India's largest digital ad study says attention is the real currency
Mumbai: India's digital advertising market may be booming, worth ₹50,000 crore, but according to new research, much of that money may be chasing the wrong metric. A landmark study by Snap Inc., WPP Media and Lumen Research, India's largest of its kind, found that attention, not impressions or view-through rate (VTR), is the real driver of brand outcomes, particularly among the country's 377 million-strong Gen Z audience. For years, digital advertisers have assumed that if an ad is viewable, it must be effective. But the study tracked the real eye movement of over 3,000 Indians aged 16–35 and found otherwise. The findings were clear: attention is eight times better than VTR at predicting brand recall, and four times better at improving favourability. Even small gains make a big difference, a 5% increase in attention delivered a 12.5% lift in favourability. But not all attention is equal. The study categorizes attention into—under 1 second: helps recall; 3-9 seconds: shifts perception; and over 9 seconds: diminishing returnsThis insight challenges the long-held belief that longer exposure is always better. The research also highlights a generational divide: Gen Z pays 34% less attention to ads on conventional social platforms than millennials and 10% less to digital video overall. But there's a twist. Gen Z responds more positively to immersive, opt-in formats. Snapchat's AR Lenses, for instance, earned twice the attention of typical digital ad formats and were three times more efficient at capturing active attention. 'This research doesn't just prove that attention matters," said Amit Chaubey, head of Marketing Science, APAC, at Snap. 'It gives brands a playbook to plan for it, measure it, and turn it into real business impact." The study introduced a new metric: Attention per Mille (APM) or the total seconds of human attention per 1,000 impressions. It also proposes cost per APM as a more accurate way to measure ad efficiency. Despite a higher Cost per Mille (CPM), Snap Lenses delivered both the highest APM and the lowest cost per APM, beating YouTube skippable and Facebook in-feed formats. 'Genuine human attention is the single most powerful predictor of business outcomes," said Mike Follett, chief executive officer (CEO) of Lumen Research. 'It's time the entire media ecosystem caught up." The study also offers a framework to drive attention: platform: go where people are more engaged, format: skippable formats like AR lenses beat non-skippable ones, and creative: UGC-style, music-led, and persistently branded creatives perform best. 'By moving beyond legacy metrics and focusing on genuine attention, we can build more effective and efficient media plans," Amin Lakhani, CEO, WPP Media South Asia, said.

Fire dept mulls third-party safety audits in industrial units
1 2 Hyderabad: A third-party audit of industries, particularly pharmaceutical companies, is being planned by Telangana fire department in industrial areas such as Pashamailaram, IDA Bollarum, Nacharam, Jeedimetla and other industrial hubs. Officials said a proposal was already sent to the govt recently, and the audits might begin over the next two months. The move comes following a chemical blast at Sigachi Industries in Pashmailaram, which lacked significant fire safety norms, including the absence of a fire system and emergency exits, among others. Over the past decade, Telangana had witnessed 102 major fire incidents at pharma units, resulting in losses of 100 crore. Fire department director GV Narayana Rao said that while some old industries started complying with norms, several others were running without any compliance. He stressed that fire audit would encourage companies to improve their safety measures and reduce the risk of dangerous accidents. We have also asked our district fire officers (DFOs) to regularly inspect all the industries," Rao added. Welcoming the decision, city-based infrastructure consultant, SP Anchuri, stressed that there needs to be multi-departmental inspections every two months to mark a clear return to safety-first thinking. "But gaps might still remain as there is no risk-based grading to prioritise the most hazardous units. Moreover, the manpower and implementation capacity need scaling to match inspection frequency. Worker-level feedback and whistleblower protection, which plays a more important role, also need to be considered," he said. Anchuri added that while audits were only the beginning, complete safety lies in integrated design thinking comprising risk awareness. Meanwhile, the fire department officials stressed that once started, industrial units must take proactive responsibility by getting audits done and submitting them online.

HC upholds order directing co-op bank to pay Rs 9.7L gratuity to retd employee
1 2 Cuttack: In a significant ruling, the Orissa high court has upheld the decision directing Cuttack Central Cooperative Bank Ltd to pay Rs 9.79 lakh in gratuity, along with interest, to retired employee Nalinikanta Sarangi. The amount was withheld citing a pending vigilance case against Sarangi. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Harish Tandon and Justice M S Raman dismissed a writ appeal filed by the bank against a single-judge order on Oct 9, 2024, which had refused to interfere with the direction passed by the controlling authority and affirmed by the joint labour commissioner-cum-appellate authority on March 28, 2022. In its July 30 order, the bench noted that the single judge had provided adequate reasoning for the decision and had thoroughly considered the factual and legal aspects of the case. "We do not find the contention that the judgment is bereft of any reason to be correct," the bench observed, adding that the single judge had not only recapitulated the facts but also considered the statute and relevant precedents. The bank had argued that gratuity should not be disbursed as disciplinary and criminal proceedings were pending. "An authority cannot withhold the statutory amount which the employee is entitled to unless conferred with such power. The authorities cannot act contrary to statutory provisions," the bench observed. With this order, Sarangi, who superannuated as assistant manager on Feb 28, 2013, will receive his dues after over 12 years. Advocate Sougat Dash argued on Sarangi's behalf, while advocate Patanjali Tripathy represented the bank. The judgment is expected to have wider implications for similar cases where gratuity payments are delayed on the grounds of ongoing investigations.
