Jordan: Agreement signed to train, employ 700 Jordanians in contracting sector
AMMAN — Chairman of the Vocational Training Corporation (VTC) and Minister of Labour Khaled Bakkar and General Manager of Mid Contracting Company Alaa Masri have signed a cooperation agreement to qualify and employ 700 Jordanians in the contracting and construction sector.
Bakkar said that the agreement comes in response to the labour market's "growing" need for specialised technical workers in the contracting sector, a "vital" industry that contributes to economic growth and creation of "sustainable" job opportunities, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Sunday.
Bakkar stressed the importance of partnerships with the private sector to achieve "sustainable" development and reduce unemployment rates.
The minister noted that the empowerment of Jordanian youth to receive the required skills is a "fundamental" pillar of the Economic Modernisation Vision and a national priority.
VTC Director General Ahmad Gharaibeh said that the corporation continues to develop its partnerships with "leading" companies in various sectors, aimed to providing training programmes that keep pace with modern technological and professional developments.
Gharaibeh noted that this agreement represents a "practical model" of the VTC's endeavours to make a "true" cooperation in linking training to direct employment opportunities.
Masri said that the company views this partnership as a "true" investment in national human capital, aimed to train Jordanian youth, in accordance with "high" standards, which would contribute to raising projects' quality and enhancing "competitiveness" of the construction sector locally and regionally.
Under the agreement, specialised vocational training programmes are outlined and designed to cover a "wide" range of skills required in the contracting sector, including public safety and work site management.
The training will be implemented over two phases, as the theoretical stage lasts six to eight weeks, followed by training at the work sites of Mid Contracting Company, which would enhance trainees' readiness to enter the job market upon graduation.
The VTC will also provide equipped training centres in Balqa and Zarqa governorates and "qualified" trainers and logistical services.
On its part, the company will provide the "necessary" raw materials, practical training sites, and equipment and commit to employing trainees, who successfully complete the programme, based on its operational needs inside and outside Jordan.

Jordanian apparel industry drives economic growth, green shift
AMMAN — The Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI) has highlighted the leather and garments industries sector as one of the national industries leading in export and production, attributing its success to 'supportive' political will and continuous economic reforms. Ehab Qadri, representative of the sector at JCI, said the sector has become one of the main pillars of Jordanian industry. It now ranks first among export-oriented manufacturing industries, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Sunday. Qadri added that the sector's export value exceeded $2.5 billion in 2024, accounting for 26 per cent of Jordan's total industrial exports. Total production amounted to more than $3.2 billion. He noted that Jordan has become a strategic industrial base for exporting products to global markets, particularly the United States, benefiting from the free trade agreements signed by the Kingdom. Qadri emphasised that the sector is among the primary drivers of the Economic Modernisation Vision (EMV), launched by His Majesty King Abdullah in 2022. The EMV aims to increase the industry's contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and create hundreds of thousands of quality jobs by 2033. He said companies in the sector are now working to shift towards higher value-added industries by promoting design, innovation, and the development of national brands. The sector is also moving towards sustainable production that considers environmental and social dimensions. As part of its partnerships, Qadri referred to the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The agreement aims to enhance productivity and adopt advanced manufacturing technologies. Qadri explained that the partnership includes initiatives to build institutional capacity, develop value chains, and promote compliance with international standards. These efforts will strengthen Jordan's position as a regional hub for advanced textile and leather industries. According to Qadri, the sector is a leader in human development, currently providing over 90,000 direct jobs. Women make up more than 67 per cent of its workforce. It is also regarded as one of the most supportive sectors for women's economic empowerment, particularly in governorates, productive branches, and industrial zones across the Kingdom. Qadri noted that the sector also appeals to Jordanian youth through specialised training programmes and job opportunities designed to align with the demands of the modern labour market. In line with the global shift towards a green economy, Qadri said major factories in the sector have begun to adopt environmental and social sustainability standards. This new feature allows UAE residents to send money directly to bank accounts in Jordan. According to Careem, transfers are completed within 24 hours on average. The service supports direct bank transfers in Jordanian Dinars to any valid IBAN. This move comes as part of Careem Pay's wider effort to serve some of the world's largest remittance corridors, including India, Pakistan, the UK, Europe, the Philippines, Lebanon, and Egypt. Careem Pay reported that the UAE is home to a large Jordanian expat community. Annual remittances from the UAE to Jordan have exceeded USD 1 billion in recent years. Mohammad El Saadi, VP of Careem Pay, revealed, 'Sending money home is one of the most meaningful things our customers do with Careem Pay. For many Jordanian expats, it's about supporting loved ones, covering school fees, or helping parents with everyday expenses. We wanted to make that process simpler, faster, and more affordable.' The launch was timed ahead of Arafah Day and Eid Al Adha. Historically, international money transfers increase during these periods as customers support their families abroad. To mark the launch, Careem Pay introduced limited-time offers: First-time remittance users get zero fees on their first two transfers to Jordan. Repeat customers can send up to AED 25,000 per transaction, with a fixed AED 10 fee. Careem Plus members enjoy added benefits. These include zero fees on transfers above AED 1,500 and lower fees on smaller amounts. They also receive exclusive perks across Careem services, such as discounted rides and free delivery on food and groceries. To send money to Jordan or other supported countries, users can download the latest version of the Careem app and select 'Send Money' from the home screen.
