Padres get small-ball run in 10th, edge Giants 1-0
June 3 - Jose Iglesias drove in the game's only run with a 10th-inning sacrifice fly and the San Diego Padres spoiled a brilliant pitching effort by Logan Webb in a 1-0 victory over the host San Francisco Giants on Monday night.
While winning for just the second time in five extra-inning affairs this year, the Padres used fundamental baseball to plate the decisive tally. Tyler Wade sacrificed automatic runner Jake Cronenworth to third base, and Iglesias drove him home with a fly to medium-deep left field off Ryan Walker (1-3).
Robert Suarez (1-1), who pitched the final two innings, stranded a runner at third base in the bottom of the 10th by getting Jerar Encarnacion to line out to first baseman Luis Arraez for the final out.
Padres starter Stephen Kolek combined with four relievers on a five-hitter.
Making just his sixth career start, Kolek overcame three hits, two walks and two hit batsmen to log 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He struck out three.
Webb went unrewarded for eight shutout, walk-free innings in which he allowed the Padres just six hits. He struck out seven.
The Giants loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning before Kolek induced consecutive grounders to third baseman Iglesias. The first resulted in a force out at the plate before Iglesias elected to go around the horn for an inning-ending double play on the second.
San Francisco took advantage of three walks to load the bases again in the seventh, but Jeremiah Estrada, the Padres' third pitcher, struck out Jung Hoo Lee to keep the game scoreless.
The Padres' best chance to score against Webb came in the third when Arraez stroked a two-out double into the right field corner with Elias Diaz on first. But the lumbering catcher could only reach third on the hit, where he was stranded when Webb got Manny Machado to pop out.
Wearing No. 4 on the back of his uniform on a day when major-leaguers honored Lou Gehrig with a No. 4 patch on the front of the jersey, Arraez joined teammate Xander Bogaerts as the only players in the game with an extra-base hit, each with a double.
Adrian Morejon and Jason Adam also contributed to the Padres' pitching effort, which resulted in just the Giants' second loss in six extra-inning games this season.

'Those who really think about the reasons that I did it think that it is the right decision, and other people I think largely get confused with whether he's going to be in the Hall of Fame or not and maybe don't think that was so good,' Manfred said. 'I think we've got to get over the hump in terms of either doing ABS or not doing it before you'd get into the complication of a separate kind of challenge,' Manfred said. Baseball in 2028 Olympics Baseball is returning to the Olympics in 2028 after being played from 1992 to 2008 and then in 2021. MLB is considering whether to allow big league players to be used at the 2028 Games. It did not allow players on 40-man rosters to participate in the 2021 Olympics and many teams discouraged top eligible prospects from playing. 'We made some progress with LA 2028 in terms of what it could look like,' Manfred said. 'We have some other business partners that we need to talk to about, changes that would need to be made in order to accommodate the Olympics. I think we're going to go forward with that process.' Manfred said the players' union appears to be supportive. Labor and possible salary cap proposal A decision on MLB's bargaining positions with the players' association, including whether to propose a salary cap, will be made after this season. Bargaining is likely to start in the spring of 2026 for a successor to the five-year agreement with the union that ended a 99-day lockout on March 10, 2022. The deal expires on Dec. 1, 2026. An ownership economic study committee was formed in early 2023, sparking speculation about a renewed push for a salary-cap system aimed at decreasing payroll disparity. 'Payroll disparity is such a fact of life among the ownership group that there's not a lot of need for talking about whether we have it or not. Everybody kind of gets it,' Manfred said. 'We understand that it has become a bigger problem for us, but there has not been a lot of conversation about that particular topic.' When MLB proposed a cap in 1994, players struck for 7 1/2 months in 1994 and '95, leading to the first cancellation of the World Series since 1904. 'Obviously, over the winter we're going to have to decide what is going to be out there from our perspective, but no decisions on that topic so far,' Manfred said. Broadcasting MLB hopes to reach a deal before the All-Star break on a Sunday night national broadcast package and for the Home Run Derby to replace the agreement ESPN said in February it was ending after this season. Manfred said MLB is negotiating with three parties and is weighing traditional broadcasters and streaming services, who may pay more but have a smaller audience. Manfred regrets giving ESPN the right to opt out, which is causing a negotiation for rights lasting three seasons. MLB's contracts with Fox and Turner end after the 2028 season. MLB could finish with an average increase in three straight years not impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic for the first time since 2004-07. Tariffs on baseballs While MLB is not concerned about Trump administration tariffs raising the cost of big league baseballs, which are manufactured in Costa Rica, the impact on minor league balls is a concern. Balloting opens for MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta
June 4 - Voting got underway Wednesday for the 2025 Major League Baseball All-Star Game on July 15 in Atlanta. The 95th Midsummer Classic will be the first at Truist Park and the third played in Atlanta (1972, 2000). The American League All-Stars have won the last two years to extend their series lead to 48-44-2. The first round of voting runs through June 26, with fans allowed to submit up to five ballots online and via mobile devices at team websites and through the MLB Ballpark App. On June 26, the top two vote-getters at each position -- including the top six outfielders -- in each league will be revealed on MLB Network. Those players advance to the second phase of voting to determine the All-Star starters. That round of balloting is from June 30 to July 2, with fans allowed to vote once per day. The starters will be announced on ESPN at 7 p.m. ET on July 2.
