Best try-saving tackle ever leaves referee, commentators and stadium in disbelief

Best try-saving tackle ever leaves referee, commentators and stadium in disbelief You'd be hard pressed to find a better try-saver than this from the All Blacks star. Tom Wright looked for the world as if he had scored, but Damian McKenzie had other ideas. (Image: Stan Sport ) All Blacks star Damian McKenzie has produced one of the greatest try-saving tackles ever seen. The moment occurred in a match between McKenzie's Chiefs and Australian outfit ACT Brumbies, who finished second and third, respectively, in the regular season. Australian international Tom Wright was seemingly destined for a try as he surged towards the left corner, with McKenzie giving chase. Wright appeared to have dotted down, with commentators and fans all thinking Brumbies had scored, but that wasn't the case. ‌ In quite remarkable circumstances, the 30-year-old fly-half managed to get his left hand underneath the ball, while simultaneously holding Wright's hand from angling the ball towards the ground as they slid across the turf. ‌ Everyone inside the stadium thought the try had been scored, before the TMO stopped the celebrations to check the grounding. After a conversation with the TMO, referee Nick Berry confirmed the ball had not been grounded by Wright, prompting a raucous reaction from both the crowd and commentators. "No try," confirmed Berry, laughing in disbelief. Article continues below "Even Nic Berry can't believe it," said Stan Sport commentator Sean Maloney. "That's the biggest cheer of the night," said the co-commentator. "Look where Damian McKenzie has come from. He made sure Tom Wright wasn't going to step him on the inside, goes straight for the ball and gets his arm underneath - that's incredible." You can watch the moment below. McKenzie's influence on the game extended far beyond this sensational try-saver, kicking 22 points from six penalties and two conversions. "Outstanding performance from the lads," said McKenzie after the game. ‌ "The Brumbies come out of the box fast, like we knew they would, and I just love the way we were really composed to stick to our game. "We put the ball in front of our forwards, and obviously our set piece was great tonight. So when we got into the 22 we managed to come away with points most of the time." Despite being known for his attacking flair, McKenzie had shown how important he can be in defence as well. With Richie Mo'unga seemingly out of the picture for the All Blacks - playing in Japan - it seems McKenzie is the front-runner to earn the starting jersey for his country this summer. Article continues below The fly-half spent one season in Japan back in 2021, before returning to New Zealand in 2022 ahead of the World Cup the following year. He has recently signed a new contract with New Zealand Rugby and Chiefs until the end of 2029, when he'll be 34-years-old.

Harry Darling battle heats up as Rangers boss Russell Martin battles old club and rivals in early test of spending power

We told you at the start of the week how the centre half, who is a free agent as his contract expires at Swansea City, was high on Martin's wanted list. Darling, 25, made 39 appearances for Swansea last season as they finished 11th in the Championship. He's a powerful centre half whose made more than 100 appearances for the Welsh outfit. He's a headline writers' dream and has an eye for goal too - even if he isn't the tallest. And he's worked with Martin twice, at both MK Dons and Swansea, where he knows all about his preference for his teams to be able to play out from the back. Back in his Swansea days, Martin said: 'He's very young and hungry and he possesses all the attributes you need to play at the very top, in my opinion, and it's up to us to help him unlock those now. 'He's got athleticism, mentality, technical ability and, first and foremost, he's a great character." Darling could be a key acquisition in an area where the Gers let Leon Balogun walk at the end of his deal - as major question marks remain over the future of Robin Propper. But the bad news for the Ibrox men is that they may have to push the boat out amid major interest in the player from one of Martin's former clubs, Norwich City - whose manager Liam Manning ALSO worked with the player at MK Dons. Manning said this week: "I had a terrific time with Harry a few years ago at MK, and I thought he was outstanding. And look, he's really excelled at the level. For me, I think he's someone that's showing what he's capable of at Championship level." Moment Ally McCoist interrupts live radio to congratulate his 'wee pal' on signing for Rangers Big-spending Birmingham City are interested too, as are ambitious Wrexham. Swansea City would clearly love to keep him but the chances of that are diminishing and director of football Richard Montague recently admitted the cub were desperate to avoid such scenarios from cropping up in future. Darling is not the first Swansea player in recent seasons to see his contract come to an end – and Montague accepts the club must look to avoid similar scenarios in the future. He said: "We want to keep our best players and we don't want to get in the situation where those players can do what Harry has been able to do, which is brilliant for Harry but less good for us as a club. 4 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Harry Darling 'interests' Rangers as Russell Martin turns to trusted lieutenant who brings 4 key characteristics

The Ibrox boss knows the defender very well having previously bossed him at Swansea City and MK Dons Harry Darling could once again team up with Russell Martin as Rangers explore a move, according to a report. The defender is no stranger to the new Light Blues boss having played under him at both Swansea City and MK Dons. ‌ His deal at the Swans meaning he is available on a free to make the move north to Ibrox. ‌ They wanted him to put pen to paper on fresh terms but with interest in his services mounting, he is expected to move on from the Welsh outfit and his destination could be yet another reunion with Martin, reports the Rangers Review. Speaking about Darling back when he took him to Swansea, Martin said: 'He's very young and hungry and he possesses all the attributes you need to play at the very top, in my opinion, and it's up to us to help him unlock those now. 'He's got athleticism, mentality, technical ability and, first and foremost, he's a great character." Record Sport exclusively revealed how Leicester City defender Conor Coady is another that the new boss wants to get on board. He is in the market for defender options with Leon Balogun exiting after his contract wasn't renewed. Robin Propper has interest from former club FC Twente with his future uncertain. He is one of three centre-backs currently on the books alongside John Souttar and Clinton Nsiala. ‌ Meanwhile, Cyriel Dessers has been urged to rubberstamp a move to AEK Athens. The Light Blues has shaken hands on a £30,000-a-week deal with the Greek giants after Record Sport revealed last week that they had made the Rangers striker their No.1 target for this summer after watching him blast 51 goals in two years in Scotland. Greek fitness coach Paraskevas Polychronopoulos worked with Dessers and was at Ibrox for eight years before leaving last year to join Leeds United. And he reckons Dessers would be a good fit for AEK. ‌ He said: "Personally, I think it would be a very good move for Cyriel and AEK to make this transfer. "He is an excellent character and highly professional. A kind person, always with a smile on his face and this is something that plays an important role. ‌ "In both his first season at Rangers and his second, he played in almost every game and that says a lot. He is always available and does not get injured. "He is a classic No.9. He may not press the opposition defence as much or hold the ball welll, but he knows how to be in the right position and with one touch send the ball into the net. This is his great gift. "He is an unpredictable top striker and can score goals in many different ways, because he has a way of getting into key positions. He was the top scorer in Scotland and scored in all competitions with Rangers in both seasons. "He is very experienced - 30 years old and played in the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Scotland, plus the Nigerian National Team. "Through his time at Rangers, he learned to withstand pressure situations. "He thrived in a team chasing the title and where there is intense pressure and criticism. He speaks many languages and that helps too."
