Report: Why WWE Pulled the Plug on John Cena's Heel Turn

Yahoo5 days ago
John Cena shocked fans by turning face on last week on WWE SmackDown, just days before his highly anticipated match at SummerSlam.
Following his unexpected turn, many fans questioned whether Cena's face was part of his plan. However, Cena stayed true to his babyface role during his SummerSlam match against Cody Rhodes. After the loss, Cena showed respect by shaking hands and hugging Rhodes with many seeing it as a passing of the torch moment.
While John Cena did receive strong support from the fans throughout the night, his return to the good side came with face to face with an old foe. Cena's longtime rival, Brock Lesnar, made a shocking return and launched an attack on him.
Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer Radio have weighed in on John Cena's recent babyface turn. According to Meltzer, WWE's creative team dropped the planned heel storyline because it wasn't working.
He said, 'They dropped [Cena's heel story] because it sucked, but also, because a John Cena-Brock Lesnar program which is obviously what they're doing does work better with Brock Lesnar as the heel.' [H/T: WrestlingInc]
Alvarez added that Cena performs better as a babyface, and this may have influenced the decision to pull the plug on his heel run. After Brock Lesnar returned, Triple H suggested that Lesnar was someone Cena personally wanted involved in his farewell run.
Cena is now rumored to face Brock Lesnar at WWE Clash in Paris. He is set to appear on the upcoming edition of SmackDown in Montreal, Canada. Many fans expect Lesnar to also show up on the show this Friday, but his appearance has not been confirmed yet.

Legendary WWE referee Charles Robinson hospitalized after being bitten by a bat

Charles Robinson has spent all these years as a wrestling referee worrying about a bat being used as a weapon, but it would be the flying creature that actually got him. The legendary ex-WCW and current WWE referee revealed Wednesday morning that a bat bit him and he landed in the hospital. 'Great way to start the morning. 2:00am and got bit by a bat,' Robinson wrote in an Instagram post featuring a photo of him in a hospital bed and a video of him receiving medicine. 'That's right a bat! 4 hours later in the ER and six shots. #animalattacks #hospital.' 4 Charles Robinson in a hospital bed. @wwerobinson/Instagram 4 Robinson receiving an injection. @wwerobinson/Instagram Robinson, 61, appeared to be taking it in all in stride. The photo he posted of himself in the hospital bed featured him in a silly pose with his tongue out, while he also posted a photo of the bat with the all-caps caption: 'BAD BAT!!!' 'This is the culprit that got me. Such a cutie! #bat #animal,' Robinson wrote with the photo, which showed the bat's's fangs. 4 The bat that bit Robinson. @wwerobinson/Instagram This scare followed Robinson suffering a cracked rib while refereeing the main event of a July 'Saturday Night's Main Event' between Goldberg and then-world heavyweight champion Gunther. Goldberg accidentally — in storyline — speared Robinson during the match, and Robinson posted an X-ray showing the cracked rib. 'Thanks @goldberg95! Never fear…I am ALL MAN and I can't be kept down!' Robinson wrote. 'I will return for @wwe #smackdown next week in #SanAntonio! #wrestling #nofear Robinson made his name in WCW in the late '90s and early 2000s, especially during his run as Ric Flair's chosen referee, going by the nickname Lil' Naitch. He eventually moved to WWE — then known as WWF — after it purchased WCW, and he now works for the 'Smackdown' brand. 4 Charles Robinson holds a bat alongside Randy Orton. @wwerobinson/Instagram Wrestling content creator Chris Van Vliet reported earlier this year that Robinson became the first WWE referee to call matches across four decades.

One of the most exciting moments in WWE recently was when Naomi cashed in her Money in the Bank briefcase at Evolution 2025 to become the Women's World Champion. This not only added another world championship to her WWE tenure, but it cemented her as one of the top villains in the company. However, it appear that the fan-favorite WWE Superstar's reign may unfortunately cut short due to medical reasons. "Naomi is not medically cleared to compete and therefore her scheduled match against Iyo Sky will not take place tonight on Monday Night Raw," WWE said. "There is definitely a rumor going around in WWE about what's going on with Naomi, and like it's being talked about by people there, and if it is, in fact, what's going on, she is going to be out for a long, long time," Alvarez said, per David Robles of "Okay, I'll just say that for now. My presumption is that, you know, people will find out probably fairly soon, but I think that that it would be a while. If this is the case." This has turned out to be the case since Naomi will be appearing on the "What's Your Story?" podcast with Stephanie McMahon alongside her husband, fellow WWE Superstar Jimmy Uso. More Pro Wrestling: WWE Superstar Reportedly Signs New Contract Naomi and WWE have remained quiet regarding what exactly the medical condition is, but Alvarez noted that it was strange for WWE to announce that she will miss the next Premium Live Event. "Clash in Paris isn't for three more weeks," Alvarez elaborated. "So oftentimes when, let's say that she has a concussion, okay, if she had a concussion, they would just be [say] she's not medically cleared to compete [and] they would evaluate her next week. "To already presume she's not going to be at Clash in Paris. That doesn't sound good." It looks like fans will have to wait until their appearance on "What's Your Story?" for an answer. John Cena Reveals One Thing He Never Did In WWE

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. As he embarks on the final months of his legendary career, John Cena has reiterated his long-standing professional philosophy. In a new interview, the 17-time world champion claimed that in his 23 years with WWE, he has "never once chosen his opponent." The comments come just over a week after the shocking return of Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. Lesnar attacked Cena, setting the stage for a massive final chapter in their historic rivalry. John Cena "I've Never Once Chosen My Opponent" Speaking with Justin Barrasso of The Boston Herald, Cena was asked about the possibility of Brock Lesnar being one of his final opponents. He used the opportunity to explain his career-long mindset. "I've been doing this for 23 years, and I've never once chosen my opponent," Cena said. "I've always lived by the philosophy that life will give you opportunities every single day, and you have to do the best you can every single day with what life gives you. So whoever challenges me for that last match, I'm going to give it my best shot." Cena's humble statement directly contradicts comments made by WWE's Chief Content Officer, Triple H. At the post-SummerSlam press conference, Triple H himself stated that Brock Lesnar's controversial return was at the top of "John Cena's wishlist" for his 2025 farewell tour. Is Cena simply being the ultimate professional and maintaining his "company man" persona, or was Triple H using Cena's name to justify the divisive decision to bring Lesnar back? The truth likely lies somewhere in the middle. John Cena: Ultimate "Company Man" For two decades, John Cena has been known for his incredible work ethic and his unwavering loyalty to WWE. As the face of the company, he maintained a grueling 300+ days-a-year schedule. His philosophy of taking on any and all challengers and doing whatever the company asks of him is a key part of his legendary reputation. His latest comments are a perfect example of this persona. Even during his final run, where most legends would be hand-picking their dream opponents for a farewell tour, Cena is publicly stating that he is simply playing the part he has been given to the best of his ability.
