Opposition slams Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane for ‘Marathi in madrasas' remark
Rane, reacting to reports that the Congress is launching Marathi schools in parts of Mumbai, said Saturday, 'Why does the Congress need to run Marathi schools? The Opposition should ask Muslims to give the azaan in Marathi. Instead of Urdu, teach Marathi in madrasas. Otherwise, all you get from there is a gun.'
The statement triggered the Opposition, which has termed it as provocative, divisive, and aimed at polarising communities.
Senior Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Shashikant Shinde criticised Rane's remarks, saying, 'This is the responsibility of the home ministry. There is no need to create unnecessary tension. If he wants Marathi to be taught in madrasas, who is stopping him? As a minister, he should raise such matters in the Cabinet, not make provocative public statements.'
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi accused Rane of hypocrisy. Responding to reporters, Owaisi said, 'If you look at his old tweets, you will see that he used to welcome the Tablighi Jamaat's Ijtema. He used to extend greetings. And now he wants azaan in Marathi?'
Rane has been known for making controversial statements. Earlier this year, he questioned the sacrifice of animals during Eid Al Adha, called for a celebration of a 'virtual Eid' and said India does not operate under Shariah law.
Pyare Khan, chairman of the Maharashtra State Minority Commission, later criticised the statements by Rane, accusing him of sowing divisions and targeting Indian Muslims in the name of Pakistan. Khan expressed concern that Rane's statements were not just harmful to society, but also risk dragging down his own party. 'By speaking like this, Nitesh Rane is damaging the image of the BJP. These are personal statements, but they reflect on everyone,' he said.

Two key National Democratic Alliance partners, the Janata Dal (United) and Telugu Desam Party, expressed support for three Bills that seek to remove the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers and Ministers from office if they are 'arrested and detained in custody on account of serious criminal charges', while also underlining reservations about 'grey areas' in the legislations. The allies hoped their concerns would be addressed during scrutiny of the Bills in the Parliament's Joint Committee. Home Minister Amit Shah moved the constitutional amendment Bills in the Lok Sabha, along with a resolution to send them to the Parliament's Joint Committee. According to sources, the allies were neither informed nor consulted about these Bills, which were circulated late on Tuesday night to Lok Sabha members. Speaking to The Hindu, the TDP's Parliamentary Party leader Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu said that these legislations are in the right direction. Listing out the 'coal block allocation, 2G spectrum allocation, AgustaWestland Helicopter procurement and Adarsh Housing scams', Mr. Devarayalu said, 'The country has moved away from the United Progressive Alliance [UPA] era, when such cases made regular headlines. Since 2014, we haven't had such cases… we may not have perfected the system but we have definitely bettered it. No Chief Minister or Minister should run the administration from jail. These legislations are in the right direction.' At the same time, he said that legislation should not be 'misused'. 'There are grey areas that need to be addressed and the Bills should be studied at length, which we believe will be done at Parliament's Joint Committee. We have to ensure that it is not misused,' he said. Secretary General and spokesperson of Janata Dal (United) K.C. Tyagi said that the legislation is aimed to ensure probity in public life. 'This should be implemented without any bias,' he said. He also rejected the Congress's claim that these Bills will be used by the government to target its own allies like the JD(U). 'No corruption charge has ever been levelled against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. I reject the Congress's claim that the Bills are aimed at us. They are aimed at the corrupt and there is nothing wrong with it,' he said. The government had moved three Bills — the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Constitution (One Hundred And Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025; and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The Bills propose the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Ministers of the Centre and State governments if are arrested and detained in custody for 30 consecutive days for offences that attract a jail term of at least five years.

'Back To Medieval Times': Rahul Gandhi On Bill To Sack Arrested Ministers
New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi has ripped into three new bills that allow senior members of the government - including the Prime Minister and chief ministers of states and union territories - to be sacked if they have been jailed (but not necessarily convicted) on 'serious criminal charges' for 30 consecutive days. The bills - presented by Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha Wednesday, while opposition MPs threw pieces of paper at him - have been sent to a joint parliamentary committee for scrutiny. But the opposition has been severely critical of the "draconian" and "unconstitutional" proposals, and has accused the BJP of conspiring to illegally remove non-allied governments by filing 'false' cases, jailing rival chief ministers for a month, and forcing them to resign. "We are going back to medieval times... when a king could remove anybody at will. There is no concept of what an elected person is. If the king (referring to Prime Minister Modi) doesn't like your face, he tells the Enforcement Directorate to file a case. Then a democratically elected person is wiped out within 30 days," Mr Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, said. "Let us not forget why we are electing a new Vice President," the Congress MP continued, referring to the surprise resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar last month. Multiple opposition leaders have criticised the 'criminal politicians' bill, including Mr Gandhi's party colleagues, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Both highlighted fears the BJP can use the bill to target non-aligned or allied governments. "Tomorrow, you can file any case against a chief minister, have him/her arrested for 30 days without conviction... and he ceases to be a chief minister?" Priyanka Gandhi Vadra asked. "... (they can) unleash biased central agencies to arrest opposition chief ministers and then, despite being unable to defeat them electorally, remove them by arbitrary arrests," Mr Singhvi said, "And no ruling party chief minister will ever be touched!" Opposition leaders pointed to the case of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was arrested on corruption charges linked to an alleged liquor excise policy scam. The AAP boss - who led his party to successive wins over the BJP in Delhi - was arrested and jailed for over five months, without a trial.
