UAE highlights commitment to global energy security at BRICS Energy Ministerial Meeting

Emirates 24/720-05-2025

Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, represented the UAE at the BRICS Energy Ministerial Meeting, hosted under the Brazilian Chairmanship in the capital city Brasília.
Addressing representatives of BRICS members and partners, Al Olama said, 'We are living through a defining moment in the global energy transition. The world is confronting a dual challenge: to ensure secure and affordable energy access for all, while dramatically reducing emissions to meet climate goals. For the UAE, this is not a dilemma, but an opportunity to drive transformation through innovation, collaboration, and decisive action.'
He added, 'The UAE has made energy access a national achievement. Today, we are proud to have 100 percent access to electricity, clean cooking solutions, and affordable heating and cooling services. We rank first globally in key energy access and affordability indicators.
"However, we recognise that our work is not complete until this becomes the reality for everyone. That's why we are investing in renewable energy projects in over 70 countries, especially in Africa, the Caribbean, and small island developing states. We are committed to sharing our models on energy financing, public-private partnerships, and technology deployment to support energy justice globally.'
In addition, Al Olama invited BRICS nations and partners to join the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance, which the UAE founded to reduce carbon intensity by advancing efficiency standards, fostering knowledge exchange, and supporting joint capacity-building. Through this alliance, BRICS members can play a vital role in accelerating global energy savings and advancing the collective decarbonisation journey.
Moreover, he pointed out that the UAE is interconnected with other GCC states through the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA), enhancing regional grid stability and energy security. The UAE actively pursues both bilateral and multilateral partnerships to deepen regional and global energy integration.
A prominent example is the UAE's collaboration with India, which includes efforts to establish a direct power interconnection and joint participation in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). This strategic corridor aims to bolster economic cooperation, accelerate clean energy deployment, and improve connectivity between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
Through these initiatives, the UAE is reinforcing its commitment to cross-border energy trade, decarbonisation, and global energy security.
At the meeting, the Brazilian Presidency presented BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform (ERCP) Report, which focuses on ensuring access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy, especially for underserved communities, and the Roadmap for BRICS Energy Cooperation for 2025-2030, which provides a strategic vision for advancing cooperation in clean energy, sustainable fuels, grid interconnection, and innovation.

From learning to earning: how to accelerate Africa's digital economy?

Africa's youth represent a formidable advantage in the global digital economy - but only if we can build an inclusive digital talent pipeline, according to Marina Madale, MTN group executive: sustainability and shared value. Marina Madale, MTN group executive: sustainability and shared value Madale was speaking during a panel discussion entitled 'Building Africa's digital talent pipeline', on the first day of the 2025 Trialogue Business in Society Conference. The session was presented in partnership with the MTN South Africa Foundation. The development-focused conference took place at The Galleria in Sandton, Johannesburg, under the theme 'Driving impact, inspiring change'. MTN was one of six corporate sponsors that partnered with Trialogue to discuss topical issues in corporate social investment (CSI), philanthropy and development in South Africa. Madale was joined on the panel by Lisema Matsietsi (senior technical advisor – Private sector engagement in employment promotion at GIZ); Lesala Ketheng (training manager at the EBL Institute of Business and Technology); and Chuma Memela (co-founder of Gambuu and director of Genie-yus AI). They discussed how demand-led skilling is one of the factors that can address the dire unemployment rate in South Africa and many other African countries. Madale noted that public-private partnerships and collaborations will be essential to developing a pool of skilled young digital professionals. An ecosystem-based approach to digital skills Madale emphasised MTN's commitment to long-term impact through the MTN Skills Academy, which was launched in 2022. The digital platform that bridges the gap between learning and earning, and rests on four integrated pillars: career guidance (in partnership with PACE), rapid upskilling, from digital literacy to advanced 'nano degrees', work readiness, and job access, using AI to match youth with real-time opportunities. 'Our aim is to build Africa's largest job portal,' Madale explained. 'However, MTN is not a training company – our strength is connectivity. This is why we have partnered with providers like Coursera, and are in conversation with other companies – we want to create an integrated ecosystem of partners.' The platform also addresses the reality of post-matric youth who cannot access university due to cost or capacity constraints. By combining high-demand, targeted learning with job connectivity, it offers a scalable alternative to traditional education pathways. Madale acknowledged that many young South Africans and broader Africans can't join the technology revolution as they lack access, infrastructure, devices and more. This is why the company takes an ecosystem-based approach to the challenge. The ultimate aim is to develop not only digital skills but also adaptability, critical thinking, and other capabilities that will help Africa become more resilient and solve its own problems, Madale added. Aligning skills to jobs The German development agency GIZ is working with MTN and the South African government to align education and skills development with the rapidly evolving digital economy. 'We're building bridges between training providers and employers through demand-led skilling,' said the GIZ's Matsietsi. 'Instead of investing in the dark, we're co-developing curricula based on real job descriptions and tracking transitions from training to employment.' Matsietsi said the GIZ is currently testing a pipeline from TVET colleges to jobs, then looking at non-traditional training providers to assist. He cited platforms like Collective_X, a Harambee initiative that aims to place digitally skilled young people in jobs, and the Youth Employment Service, the highest-impact private sector youth employment programme in South Africa, which help to bring skilled youth into employment. Five 'top' career pathways identified by the GIZ include cybersecurity, cloud computing, data analysis, software development, and content development. In addition, the GIZ partners with public bodies such as the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies and the National Electronic Media Institute of SA to enable the joint testing of scalable, data-driven models that will tackle youth unemployment. The agency emphasises inclusivity, applying gender and disability lenses, and attempts to reduce drop-out rates. Khetheng stressed the urgent need for programmes that offer real-world, job-ready training, not just certificates. 'The gap isn't only skills – it's experience, access to mentorship, and infrastructure,' he noted. 'Many learners don't have reliable laptops, internet access, or even digital literacy. You can't work remotely on a laptop operating Windows 7, for example.' He stressed the importance of human-centred approaches: practical exposure, peer mentorship, and psychological support to help learners thrive in difficult socioeconomic environments. AI ushers in opportunities Despite anxiety around artificial intelligence, the panellists were confident that AI's transformative potential should be harnessed, not resisted. 'AI isn't going to destroy jobs – it's going to transform them,' asserted Memela, himself a graduate of the EBL Institute of Business and Technology, and one of its ''champions' who is part of the mentorship pipeline. He currently teaches entrepreneurs to become 'super-employees' – multi-skilled generalists who can combine digital skills with critical thinking. 'We shouldn't be debating whether 19-year-olds should use AI when countries like China and the United States are teaching it in primary school,' he added, saying educational institutions need to adapt to meet the job needs of the future. It is also important to mentor young people and bring them into the system. 'I am a beneficiary of opportunity – I have to pay it forward,' Memela concluded.

South Africa: Sars announces 2025 tax filing season

The South African Revenue Service (Sars) has announced the official start of the 2025 Filing Season, effective from 07 July 2025 to 20 October 2025. This season marks an important period where income tax returns of the majority of taxpayers are automatically assessed. The category of taxpayers who are automatically assessed will receive notification from Sars from 7 to 20 July 2025. Taxpayers who do not receive notifications from Sars that they are automatically assessed are encouraged to submit their tax returns in a timely and accurate manner from 21 July 2025. The Filing Season will close on 20 October 2025 for non-provisional individuals. Auto assessments In line with its strategic objective to make it easy for taxpayers to comply, Sars has identified a large segment of non-provisional and provisional taxpayers who receive income from one or more sources from formal and other forms of employment and whose tax affairs are not complicated, have been selected to be automatically assessed. The process of automatic assessment is made possible by the availability of 3rd party data received from employers, pension fund administrators, medical aid schemes and more. This enables Sars to complete the tax declaration on behalf of this segment of taxpayers and issue them with an Auto Assessment. The taxpayers in the auto assessment category do not have to do anything if they are satisfied with the calculation on their tax returns. If the taxpayer thinks that Sars has not captured all the necessary information, they are free to make changes on their tax returns and submit the missing information through eFiling by 20 October 2025. Where the taxpayer has a refund, they will receive it in 72 hours if all their information is correct. If they owe Sars they must pay Sars through their respective banks, and the details are provided below. Auto assessment process The steps in the Auto Assessment process will work as follows: - From 7 July, Sars will communicate directly with affected taxpayers by SMS and/or email, notifying taxpayers of their auto-assessed tax returns. - If there is a refund due to the taxpayer, it will be paid directly to the taxpayer's bank account within 72 business hours after the notification. If there is money owing to Sars, it must be paid to Sars Bank Account, eFiling or through the SARS MobiApp by the stipulated date. - Taxpayers can access their auto assessed income tax returns through any of Sars' channels, such as the Sars MobiApp or Sars eFiling, to review and verify the completeness and accuracy of the information that resulted in the auto assessment. - If a taxpayer is satisfied with the auto assessment, they don't have to do anything further and the process terminates at this point. - If the taxpayer finds that there is missing and/or inaccurate information, pertaining to either income or expenses, which may have affected the outcome, it must be declared to Sars by submitting a tax return to Sars. Non-provisional taxpayers and other taxpayers Taxpayers who are still required to file a tax return (non-provisional taxpayers and other taxpayers). This population represents taxpayers in respect of whom their tax matters are deemed complex. This population will be able to start filing tax returns from 21 July 2025 until 20 October 2025. Provisional taxpayers as well as Trust submissions can start with filing a return from 21 July 2025 until 19 January 2026. 'We remind taxpayers to ensure that their submissions comply with current regulations and deadlines to avoid penalties," says Sars.
