Anthony Joshua told Jake Paul fight is 'bigger' than Tyson Fury showdown

Daily Mirror5 days ago
Joshua has verbally agreed to fight Paul next year, and one individual believes a showdown with the YouTube star is bigger than a potential all-British bout with Fury
Barry Hearn believes a bout between Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul would be more massive than a potential all-British heavyweight showdown with Tyson Fury.

Joshua hasn't stepped into the ring since his crushing knockout loss to Daniel Dubois last September. A clash with Fury appeared on the horizon after the 'Gypsy King' endured consecutive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk. Just weeks following his second loss to the Ukrainian, the Morecambe brawler announced his retirement from boxing.

However, mere months later, Fury confirmed his comeback to competitive boxing and is targeting a bout next year, reports All Out Fighting. The 36-year-old remains open to facing Joshua - but may have to get in line as it appears 'AJ' could take on Paul instead. The duo have exchanged verbal jabs over recent months and have verbally committed to a dust-up.

Whilst fans are desperate to witness Joshua and Fury finally clash in the ring, Hearn has explained precisely why he believes a fight between 'AJ' and Paul would be bigger. Speaking to IFL TV, he said: "I do not really have an opinion, I listen to the market! If a market says they want that product, you bring out that product. If the market says we love darts, then I would do lots of darts events.
"If the market says we want to see Anthony Joshua against the YouTuber or whatever his you want to call him... an influencer, the market have spoken. And anyone in business that does not listen to the market, do not stay in business very long." When questioned about which bout would be 'bigger' between Joshua vs Fury or Joshua vs Paul, Hearn responded: "Probably the latter. But, I am not saying it should be, I am just saying it is the world we live in and everyone has the ability to ignore reality, but it never seems to really make sense at the end of the day.
"You have to listen to what people want. We are not governing our own destiny here, we listen to broadcasters, to fans, to sponsors, and we have to go where we have to go. If that does not appeal to what I call the traditionalists within boxing, of which, at a maximum, is five per cent of your audience... the day you run a business based on five per cent opinion, you will be out of business very quickly."

Speaking to DAZN before Oleksandr Usyk's clash with Daniel Dubois, Paul virtually guaranteed that he would step into the ring with Joshua next year. "Yeah 100 per cent it's going to happen. We're going to do the unthinkable and create one of the biggest fights in the history of boxing," he said.
"It's not even about it being realistic or not, it's going to happen so fasten your seatbelts. And when I knock him out I'll go down in the history books forever."
When is Anthony Joshua's next fight?
As Joshua is currently recuperating from an elbow operation, the Brit is aiming to get back in the ring before the year's end. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, has recently disclosed that 'AJ' is now looking to move forward with his career after repeatedly chasing a fight with Fury, but he still harbours hopes of eventually squaring off with the 'Gypsy King' before retiring.
In a chat with Sky Sports about Joshua's future plans, Hearn stated: "Yeah, good, he had that operation recently... that elbow surgery, which went very well. You will see him return in October, November or December."

Charles Leclerc in bluntly-honest Lewis Hamilton verdict amid Ferrari team-mate's woe

Lewis Hamilton hit the lowest point of his Ferrari career so far at the Hungarian Grand Prix where he qualified and finished 12th, declared himself "useless" and said the team should replace him Charles Leclerc said he is "desperate" for Lewis Hamilton to get back to his best amid the darkest period of the Brit's Ferrari career. The Hungarian Grand Prix was a particularly chastening experience for the seven-time Formula 1 champion who qualified only 12th and made no progress in the race. ‌ After Saturday's session, he declared himself "useless" and suggested the team should replace him in a difficult-to-watch interview. And his mood was no better after the race itself, stating bluntly that "nothing had changed" from the previous day. ‌ The summer break has arrived at the perfect time for Hamilton who had the air of a man who desperately needs to reset. And Leclerc hopes that is team-mate can get it together soon to help push the team on to new heights. ‌ The Monegasque said: "At the end we are one team, and as much as I want to finish in front of Lewis, I want both of us to be successful, and Ferrari to be successful. "Obviously, this weekend has been a tough one for Lewis, but I have no doubt it is a one-off and I am sure the second part of the season will be a lot more positive." Leclerc has been by far the stronger Ferrari driver so far this year. He is only one place above Hamilton in the championship, the Scuderia duo fifth and sixth, but has 151 points compared to the Brit's 109 and has stood on the podium five times so far, while Hamilton has yet to record a top-three finish. Leclerc has also regularly had Hamilton's number in both qualifying and the race. He has outqualified his team-mate 10 times out of 14 so far this year, and finished ahead of the Brit on 11 occasions – that figure would have been 12, had they not both been disqualified from the Chinese Grand Prix back in March. Despite their struggles at times, Ferrari head into the summer break second in the championship, 14 points ahead of Mercedes. Leaders McLaren are 299 points clear and almost guaranteed the title, meaning the best the Scuderia can hope for is to be the best of the rest behind them. And Leclerc does not have much hope that they will be able to prevent that from happening. He said: "I don't think we are going into the second half of the season thinking that we can win anywhere, and that's what makes the frustration even bigger, because we knew that this was one opportunity probably over the season and we had to take it, but unfortunately with [his car issue suffered in the Budapest race] we couldn't do much."

North Wales Crusaders are still favourites for league crown

Swinton Lions completed a League One double over front-runners Cru with their 24-12 success at Colwyn Bay's Stadiwm CSM, on a day when Forster's side could have wrapped up the championship. However, despite seeing his side slip to only their second league defeat of the campaign, head coach Forster says Crusaders are still in a great position. He told the club's YouTube channel: 'We move on. We're still in a great position. 'I've just said that. The lads have put themselves in this position where, you know, two from four gets you a league title. 'You know, we'd have took that at the start of the season, obviously. 'So, it isn't the end of the world.' North Wales will be looking to bounce back this Sunday when they make the trip to sixth-placed Rochdale Hornets, who need a victory themselves in their quest to qualify for the end-of-season Super 8s. The month draws to an end for Cru with home matches against Goole Vikings (August 24) and Keighley Cougars (August 31), before the regular season comes to a close at Whitehaven on September 7.

How Josh Kerr celebrated British title as world champion makes mission admission

Josh Kerr became the British 5000m champion at the weekend and immediate turned his attention to defending his world title in Tokyo next month Josh Kerr celebrated winning his second British title on Sunday night by having a barbecue with his nearest and dearest. ‌ But while family and friends tucked into meat and beers, the reigning 1500m world champion stuck to water and salad, his only treat pushing back bed time by 90 minutes from the usual 9pm. ‌ And if Kerr, who was a class above when winning the 5000m in Birmingham, retains his global crown in Tokyo next month another summer of sacrifice will all prove worth it. ‌ 'I've been on a mission this year to win another world title,' he says. 'It's very, very difficult and I've got a lot of respect for how difficult it's going to be. 'These races are hard. You have to have everything right, you need to be smooth and confident. But you also have to enjoy these little moments when they come.' That it was only Kerr's second British title - following on from the 1500m in 2021 - means the medal will be cherished more than many will assume. 'What we've lost over the last few years at British Champs, because we've been given a bye into major championships, is the pride of having British titles,' he adds. 'I've only gotten one British title in my career before and they actually mean a lot to me.' After his brief and modest celebrations, Kerr was heading right back to his base in Albuquerque and he does not plan to race again before the Tokyo heats on September 14. ‌ 'I've shown I'm sharp, there's not much need for another one,' he says, which is something not many of his competitors can boast about presently. Fierce rival Jakob Ingebrigtsen is yet to line up this summer because of injury, fellow Brit George Mills is recovering from a broken wrist and may choose to focus on the 5000m. ‌ Both Yared Nuguse, bronze medallist in Paris last summer, and Hobbs Kessler, who was fifth, failed to qualify from the cut-throat US trials on Saturday with two relative unknowns in Jonah Koech and student Ethan Strand booking their spots instead. 'Front running against those college guys, running 3:30, is not easy,' Kerr added. 'It's shown at every world champs and Olympic Games. The US team is one of the best in the world but I'm in a very lucky position. But I made my own luck this year by having the world title.' Meanwhile, Charlie Dobson is dreaming of having two Brits on the 400m podium in Tokyo, admitting: 'It would be an incredible achievement.' ‌ The Colchester athlete, 25, retained his British title on Sunday with Olympic and world medallist Matt Hudson-Smith given an exemption because his wife is due to give birth in the US. And should they both finish among the top three next month it would be the first time since Osaka 2007 that two Brits won medals in the same event - following in the footsteps of Christine Ohuruogu and Nicola Sanders in the women's 400m. 'That would be such a big deal," Dobson said. "I'm not brilliant with my athletics knowledge but I don't remember the last time it happened.' ‌ Dobson defeated Hudson-Smith for the first time last month at London Diamond League with both among the fastest five in the world so far this season. And Dobson admits having Hudson-Smith as both a team-mate and rival is spurring him on. 'Matt's a phenomenal athlete so any chance I get to race him is a privilege. I love doing it. Just having the chance to beat him once proves he's human at the end of the day and everyone can be beaten if the race goes how you plan it to go.'
