The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines urged the European Union to stop "provoking trouble" in the South China Sea on Thursday, and advised Manila not to "fantasise" about relying on outside forces to resolve disputes in the waterway.
An embassy spokesperson made the comments after EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas visited the Philippine capital and voiced concern over China's activities in the busy waterway, where its claims overlap those of some Southeast Asian nations.
"We urge the EU to genuinely respect China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea and to stop provoking trouble," the spokesperson said in a statement on the embassy website, noting the bloc has no right to interfere.
The spokesperson also said Manila should return to dialogue and consultation to manage differences with China instead of "fantasising about relying on external forces" to resolve the South China Sea dispute.
The Philippine Embassy in Beijing did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
GMA News Online has reached out to the Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs and the European Union in Philippines for comment, but they have yet to respond as of posting time.
The EU and the Philippines have expressed concerns about China's "illegal, coercive, aggressive and deceptive measures" against Philippine vessels and aircraft conducting lawful maritime operations in the South China Sea, according to a joint statement after Kallas met with Philippine foreign minister earlier this week.

PH envoy says US request for Quiboloy extradition has been with DOJ since June

"I can confirm the documents/evidence for the extradition request are all now with the DOJ. They have been there since June," Romualdez told GMA News Online. Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez said the US's request for the extradition of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ leader Pastor Apollo Quiboloy was sent to the Philippine government as early as June. Romualdez said the extradition request, as well as the documents and pieces of evidence in Quiboloy's cases, are already with the Department of Justice. "I can confirm the documents/evidence for the extradition request are all now with the DOJ. They have been there since June," Romualdez told GMA News Online. Romualdez said US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson and Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla are expected to meet next week to discuss the issue. GMA News Online is seeking comment from the DOJ regarding the extradition request that was transmitted in June and the expected meeting between the secretary and the US ambassador. In a message to reporters, DOJ spokesperson Mico Clavano said the DOJ had no information yet on the extradition request. When asked if an individual facing charges in the country may be extradited, Clavano said courts may act on cases with urgency to prevent delaying a valid extradition. 'The rule is that he must first face trial and, if convicted, serve his sentence here before extradition may proceed,' he said. 'However, courts retain the power to act on cases with urgency, so if circumstances warrant, we may move to resolve proceedings in order not to unduly delay a valid extradition request,' he added. The US Embassy in Manila referred the question to the US Department of Justice when asked for comment. –NB, GMA Integrated News

Marcos: Baliwag flood project contractor to be blacklisted, face charges

President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. inspects the reinforced concrete riverwall project in Barangay Piel, Baliwag, Bulacan on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. Marcos says he is 'very angry' that the P55-million project was recorded as completed, but in reality it was not. PPA President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Wednesday said SYMS Construction Trading, the firm involved in an alleged ghost flood project in Baliwag, Bulacan, would be blacklisted from the government's roster of contractors. "Ang SYMS Construction Trading ay agad na iba-blacklist at haharap sa mga kaso sa ilalim ng Revised Penal Code at RA 3019. Hahanapin at sisiyasatin pa natin ang iba pa nilang proyekto," Marcos said. (SYMS Construction Trading will be immediately blacklisted and will face charges under the Revised Penal Code and the RA 3019. We will also scrutinize their other projects.) Marcos also assured that those involved in the alleged anomalous project in Barangay Piel in Baliwag would be suspended and slapped with anti-graft and malversation of public funds charges. "Hindi natin palalampasin ito. Sususpendihin at kakasuhan ang lahat ng opisyal na nag-authorize at nakipagsabwatan dito ng paglabag sa Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act at Malversation of Public Funds through Falsification of Public Documents," he said. (We will not let this pass. The officials involved will be suspended and will face charges for violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, as well as the Malversation of Public Funds through Falsification of Public Documents.) GMA News Online has requested comment from SYMS Construction Trading regarding the President's statements, but the company has yet to respond as of posting time. Earlier in the day, Marcos said the Barangay Piel project was an example of falsification of documents because as per records, it was finished. However, when Marcos inspected it, he learned that it was not even completed. The President said he was very angry with such flood control projects. Marcos had disclosed that 20% of the total P545 billion budget of flood control projects was awarded to only 15 contractors. The total number of the flood control projects was 9,855. Marcos earlier said a total of 6,021 projects were worth more than P350 billion, adding that they do not specify the exact type of flood control structures built, repaired, or rehabilitated. The President's list of 15 contractors does not include SYMS Construction Trading. Meanwhile, Marcos called on the public to continue filing reports in the website with regard to corrupt flood control projects. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

US seeking Quiboloy extradition, sources say

Documents supporting the US request to extradite Quiboloy were transmitted to the Philippine Department of Justice in June this year, according to sources who have knowledge of the process, but spoke on condition of anonymity due to a lack of authority to speak on the issue. The United States is seeking the extradition of Filipino religious leader Apollo Quiboloy, who is wanted in the US for several charges, including child sex trafficking, engaging in sex with minors, fraud, and money laundering, Philippine government sources told GMA News Online on Wednesday. Documents supporting the US request to extradite Quiboloy were transmitted to the Philippine Department of Justice in June this year, according to sources who have knowledge of the process, but spoke on condition of anonymity due to a lack of authority to speak on the issue. Quiboloy, indicted by a US federal grand jury in 2021, landed on the Federal Bureau of Investigation's most wanted list, which identified the charges against him, such as conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking by force, fraud, and coercion, sex trafficking of children, and bulk cash smuggling. 'The US is seriously seeking the extradition request and taking the necessary steps with the Philippine government in bringing him to justice,' one of the sources said. An extradition treaty signed in 1994 by Manila and Washington states that "all requests for extradition shall be submitted through the diplomatic channel" and "shall be supported by documents, statements, or other types of information which describe the identity and probable location of the person sought." The Philippines is mandated under the treaty to promptly notify the US through the diplomatic channel of its decision on the extradition request. If the extradition request is granted, "the authorities of the contracting parties shall agree on the time and place for the surrender of the person sought," the agreement said. GMA News Online reached out to Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel Romualdez for confirmation, but referred the request for comment to the DOJ. Comments have also been sought from the DOJ and the US Embassy in Manila, and these will be published as soon as they are available.
