Mass arrests as operation Vala Umgodi targets illegal mining
Vala Umgodi Operations led to three arrests of 1 857 suspects of different nationalities in April.
The suspects were arrested for illegal mining-related offences and various other crimes such as murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of explosives and possession of counterfeit goods.
More than 100 unpolished diamonds, including suspected diamond stones, were seized during the three separate Vala Umgodi operations.

Other items seized include 27 unlicensed firearms, 385 rounds of ammunition, 71 vehicles (sedans, bakkies, trucks, mining machines, trailers, and tractors), 341 phendukas, and six phenduka stands.
On April 21, an intelligence-driven operation in Primrose and Rietvlei resulted in the arrest of 10 illegal miners.
A joint operation at Marathon/ Rasta informal settlement in Primrose led to the arrest of eight individuals who were found in possession of various equipment, including phendukas, steel balls, gas cylinders, and generators. Two of these suspects were also found in possession of unlicensed firearms and live ammunition.

Body of woman with gunshot wound found in Roodepoort veld Police are investigating a case of murder after the discovery of a woman's body, believed to be in her early 30s, in an open veld in Braamfischerville Phase 4 on June 4. According to the police's Johannesburg District communications co-ordinator, Lieutenant Colonel Mpho Tshetlhane, the body was discovered and reported to police by a passer-by at about 08:00. 'Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman sustained a bullet wound to the head. She was declared dead by paramedics on the scene. 'No one has been arrested yet, and police investigations are continuing.' The police are appealing to community members with information regarding the incident, or that might assist police investigations, to contact Dobsonville Police Station on 079 525 1365 or 079 525 1373. Alternatively, they can report any information at their nearest police station or via the police Crime Stop number, 08600 10111. 'They can also use the MySAPS App to provide tip-offs anonymously.' This is the latest incident in what seems to be a spike in similar cases in recent months, with the bodies of two women found in a veld in Matholesville in April. R100k reward to catch fugitive linked to missing Sodwana skipper
IN a bid to bring justice to the family of missing, presumed murdered, Sodwana Bay skipper John 'Matambu' Dercksen, an avid angler and friend of the missing fisherman has posted a hefty reward. The R100 000 reward has been posted by an 'angel fisherman who walked a long path with our beloved John Matambu', said Cherie Eilertsen, Dercksen's sister. The reward, which is equivalent to 350 000 Mozambique metical, is being offered for information on the current location of Tomas Frederik 'Verdie' Visser, and will be paid on his successful apprehension and arrest. ALSO READ: Suspect in missing Sodwana Bay skipper case reportedly 'on the run' This latest development comes just weeks after a suspected sighting of Visser in Mozambique, which turned out to be someone else. In the meantime, a warrant for Visser's arrest has been issued in connection with a sexual assault case in Nelspruit. This after a summons to appear in court was not served on Visser as he could not be traced, as posted on social media by Eilsertsen earlier in the week. According to Eilertsen's post, charges against Visser for the Nelspruit matter include house break-in with intent to commit crime; assault; and sexual offences.
