New York Giants' Darius Slayton on Russell Wilson and the 'clarity' he provides

USA Today25-07-2025
The New York Giants started four different players at quarterback last season, and as you can figure, they were a mess on offense.
This year, they have four healthy quarterbacks and should not be concerned about either quality or quantity. The quarterback room has been revamped with veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston joining fan favorite Tommy DeVito and first-round pick Jaxson Dart.
It's been made clear that Wilson, a former Super Bowl champion and 10-time Pro Bowler, is the starter. Thus far in camp, he's already upgraded the Giants' sagging offense, which has been at the bottom of the league the past two seasons.
Veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton, who, along with Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, is one of the most senior Giants, told reporters on Thursday that Wilson's takeover has gone smoothly.
"Probably just some clarity," Slayton said when asked what Wilson brings. "He's been playing football for a long time, so he knows what's worked for him and his career. He knows what he likes, what he doesn't like, and that makes it really simple on all of us, just be able to get on the same page as him.
"It's been nice having him around. Been a good first two days for us. Obviously, camp is a little bit different than OTA's -- a little bit higher intensity, a little more team periods, things like that, where you get to play a little bit closer and closer to real football. It's been a good two days, and I think Russ has operated well."
Wilson brings a new element to the Giants' huddle -- a passion for the game along with a level of experience and intelligence they haven't had in years. He is the master of the deep ball. The Giants have not been proficient when it comes to throwing deep in recent years.
In the first two days, Wilson showed off a bit, making good use of his two top young wideouts, Malik Nabers and Wan'Dale Robinson. Slayton likes what he's seen so far.
"Yeah, you see flashes like Wan'Dale made a play down the field. That was kind of a situational period," he said. "Yesterday, Malik made a couple plays down the field, so you see the flashes kind of early on. We're in the red zone, the high reds, so we literally haven't even gotten to the full field yet, but you kind of see flashes of plays being made. That's what I'll say. I think the first few days, we've done a pretty solid job so far, but you definitely see flashes."
Slayton is entering his seventh year in blue and has only experienced one winning season. He has been through some lean times here and finally sees the tide turning for him and his team.
"When -- I'll say when -- when we get it turned around and when we get this thing going in the right direction, I think for me specifically, it's been a good six years," he said. "It's been a long six years, but I've looked forward to every year, and obviously, I don't want to see any team in the league succeed more than I want to see the Giants. Obviously, my whole career has been invested here. Most of my adult life has been invested in the New Jersey and New York area, so it'll be huge for me to be able to win here when my time is done."

Dan Orlovsky Names Five NFL QBs with the Most to Prove

Dan Orlovsky Names Five NFL QBs with the Most to Prove originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The NFL season is right around the corner, and teams are deep into prep mode, fine-tuning playbooks and locking in reps with one goal in mind: a Super Bowl run. As always, certain players are under more scrutiny than others. For quarterbacks, the spotlight burns brightest. Whether it's bouncing back from injuries, silencing critics or finally living up to their draft hype, some QBs are feeling the pressure more than most. According to ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky, there are five signal-callers in particular who enter this season with more to prove than anyone else. He started with Anthony Richardson, saying this is the year he needs to stay healthy, be that tough, durable guy and finally show why the Indianapolis Colts took him fourth overall. Richardson has all the talent, but Orlovsky said he believes it's time to turn potential into production and prove the pick was worth it. He then talked about Bryce Young, reminding everyone that his rookie season didn't go well at all for the No. 1 overall pick of the Carolina Panthers. But Young did finish strong and has the perfect opportunity to prove he can bounce back and quiet critics who already have written him off. Next up was J.J. McCarthy, who Orlovsky says is surrounded by the right offensive line and weapons to make a serious playoff push with the Minnesota Vikings, but it's on him to put the pieces together and deliver. He also brought up Trevor Lawrence, calling him the 'golden child' and saying the pressure is on after the Jacksonville Jaguars loaded him up with talent, including stars like Travis Hunter. Orlovsky Saves the Best for Last Finally, Orlovsky talked about Caleb Williams, calling him the 'next Patrick Mahomes' and saying with one of the best offensive minds in football helping him, now is the time to show he's everything he was hyped up to be the face of the franchise, the elite talent and the future of the organization. Williams is deep into his second training camp with the Chicago Bears, but with a third head coach and fourth offensive coordinator already, it feels like he's starting over. Despite the constant changes, Williams has shown steady growth. Bears head coach Ben Johnson and offensive coordinator Declan Doyle have praised Williams' poise, arm talent and ability to thrive in unscripted moments. Backup QB Case Keenum also highlighted his competitive edge, saying Williams has that 'switch' great players have. His drive to lead in clutch situations is winning over the locker room, and it's clear he's embracing the grind to become the Bears' story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 4, 2025, where it first appeared.

Baltimore Ravens Schedule Predictions 2025: Game by Game Ravens Picks

The Baltimore Ravens have won double-digit games in each of the last three seasons but haven't been to the Super Bowl since 2012. While dominating in the regular season remains important, what matters more than ever for Lamar Jackson and Co. is getting over their playoff woes. Let's dive into our game-by-game Ravens schedule predictions for this season. Week 1 @ Buffalo Bills: Win (1-0) The Ravens' schedule opens with an opportunity for revenge against the Buffalo Bills. Not only should this be the best game in Week 1, but it could also be one of the best NFL games in 2025. Baltimore and Buffalo are evenly matched, but we give a slight edge to the Ravens' offense and defense in both matchups. That makes the difference, especially late in the game, with Baltimore pulling out a win. Prediction: Baltimore Ravens 28, Buffalo Bills 24 Related: Week 2 vs Cleveland Browns: Win (2-0) This should be a one-sided matchup, even if the Cleveland Browns' defense delivers some good drives. Defensively, Baltimore boasts far too much talent in the secondary and front seven for Cleveland's offense to have any sustained success. Turnovers and a few sacks will help Baltimore coast to a two-score win over the Browns. Prediction: Baltimore Ravens 28, Cleveland Browns 14 Related: Week 3 vs Detroit Lions: Win (3-0) The timing of this matchup with the Detroit Lions could prove favorable for Baltimore. There's no doubt that the Lions roster is outstanding and their experience gives them a real shot at winning a matchup against a top-three team. However, the inexperience of the new play-callers and the small mistakes that naturally occur when still settling into new systems are enough to swing this. Baltimore pulls out a close one, in what could prove to be a Super Bowl preview. Prediction: Baltimore Ravens 34, Detroit Lions 31 Related: Week 4 @ Kansas City Chiefs: Win (4-0) There remains a real likelihood that Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is serving a suspension for this matchup. If that's the case, it will have a significant impact on the Chiefs' offense and that makes this draw easier for Baltimore. It'll be a nail-biter, but Rice's absence looms large late as Jackson outduels Patrick Mahomes to keep the Ravens undefeated. Prediction: Baltimore Ravens 30, Kansas City Chiefs 24 Read More: Week 5 vs Houston Texans: Win (5-0) The Houston Texans' offensive line is going to cost them multiple wins this season, including against the Ravens. DeMeco Ryans is a defensive savant, and the talent he has to work with matches up well against the Ravens' offense. That will keep this a one-score game, but it's going to be the Ravens' pass rush that really controls the outcome. Prediction: Baltimore Ravens 21, Houston Texans 17 Read More: Week 6 vs Los Angeles Rams: Loss (5-1) The Ravens' dreams of an undefeated season come to an end early. The Los Angeles Rams come into Baltimore with one of the best offenses in the NFL. What also separates this year's team from last season's squad is the quality of the offensive line. Baltimore won't get to Matthew Stafford quickly enough, allowing him to hit Puka Nacua and Davante Adams enough to sustain scoring drives. On the other side of the ball, the Rams' front seven simply overwhelms Baltimore up front. Prediction: Los Angeles Rams 28, Baltimore Ravens 20 Read More: Week 8 vs Chicago Bears: Win (6-1) The Chicago Bears have a bright future, but it takes time for a quarterback to settle into Ben Johnson's system, and this pass rush is just league average. Those two issues are enough to allow Baltimore to come out of this one comfortably, pulling out a 10-point victory. Prediction: Baltimore Ravens 31, Chicago Bears 21 Read More: Week 9 @ Miami Dolphins: Win (7-1) The Miami Dolphins secondary is going to be in for a very long day. With even a little time to throw, Jackson will pepper Zay Flowers and company with targets against the worst cornerback room in the NFL. That's really all Baltimore needs to come out of this one with a 7-1 record. Prediction: Baltimore Ravens 35, Baltimore Ravens 24 Week 10 @ Minnesota Vikings: Loss (7-2) It will be a defense-driven battle, with both clubs exchanging big hits and racking up multiple sacks. Baltimore should be successful in making quarterback J.J. McCarthy uncomfortable, but Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores is just as skilled at frustrating MVP-caliber quarterbacks. With the added edge of home-field advantage, the Vikings hand the Ravens their second loss of the year. Prediction: Minnesota Vikings 20, Baltimore Ravens 17 Week 11 @ Cleveland Browns: Win (8-2) Rebounding from the loss in Minnesota, Baltimore gets to bounce back quickly against the Browns. Again, this is a matchup where Myles Garrett and the Browns' defensive line can cause some problems for Jackson. Fortunately, Derrick Henry rips off some big runs, and the Ravens put on a defensive clinic to secure their 8-2 record as they head back home. Prediction: Baltimore Ravens 23, Cleveland Browns 10 Read More: Week 12 vs New York Jets: Win (9-2) The New York Jets have a bright future under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn, especially with some of the young talent they have on both sides of the ball. With that acknowledged, Baltimore knows it can exploit the Jets' No. 2 cornerback, Brandon Stephens. Between that weak spot and the significant advantage the Ravens' defense holds over a Justin Fields-led offense, Baltimore should win this one with ease. Prediction: Baltimore Ravens 31, New York Jets 14 Week 13 vs Cincinnati Bengals: Win (10-2) The Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals offenses exchanged explosive plays in their meetings last year, and we expect that once again during the 2025 NFL season. Joe Burrow will do everything in his power to match Jackson touchdown for touchdown, but the vast difference in talent and coaching between these clubs swings the matchup in the Ravens' favor. Prediction: Baltimore Ravens 38, Cincinnati Bengals 31 Week 14 vs Pittsburgh Steelers: Win (11-2) The Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers have a history of fantastic matchups. However, we're not as confident it'll be quite as good a battle this year. Pittsburgh's offense doesn't have much offensive weaponry outside of DK Metcalf, and Baltimore certainly has the defensive backs to take him away. If their WR1 is blanked, a 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers is in for a very long day against this Ravens defense. Prediction: Baltimore Ravens 28, Pittsburgh Steelers 20 Read More: Week 15 @ Cincinnati Bengals: Loss (11-3) Just two weeks after beating Burrow and the Bengals in a shootout, Baltimore lets one slip away in Week 15. Cincinnati's offensive line holds up better in pass protection, and the young defensive talent begins delivering more consistency. With the support of that and a third-quarter interception thrown by Jackson, Cincinnati is able to pull out the win. Prediction: Cincinnati Bengals 31, Baltimore Ravens 27 Week 16 vs New England Patriots: Win (12-3) The Ravens will handle the Patriots in Week 16 thanks to Baltimore's relentless defensive pressure and opportunistic secondary that'll disrupt New England's rhythm. That's what will cause the real issue for New England, resulting in three turnovers with two of them turned into scoring drives by this Ravens offense. Prediction: Baltimore Ravens 30, New England Patriots 13 Week 17 @ Green Bay Packers: Win (13-3) A young Green Bay Packers receiving corps is really going to be in for it against the Ravens' secondary. This will also be a revenge game for Jaire Alexander, assuming he's healthy. Ultimately, Baltimore's advantages in pass defense and its ability to run the football will swing this matchup, but it should be a great duel all four quarters. Prediction: Baltimore Ravens 34, Green Bay Packers 28 Week 18 @ Pittsburgh Steelers: Win (14-3) We're expecting the Steelers to be out of the playoff mix by this point in the season, and Aaron Rodgers will be ready to retire. Baltimore will still be playing for home-field advantage in the AFC, earning that critical first-round bye. Jackson and Henry get the Ravens out to an early 20-10 lead in the third quarter, and then this team finishes its season with a 14-3 regular-season record.
