McDonald's Japan announces Pokémon Trading Card Happy Meals with guaranteed Pikachus
McDonald's Japan is right in the middle of a collaboration with Sanrio, currently serving up Happy Meals with summer suntanned Hello Kitty Toys. But cravings for burgers and fries will always return, and so McDonald's is already planning its next team-up with a superstar character in Japan, and this time it's Pikachu.
Coming on August 8 is a new line of Pokémon Happy Meal toys, and fans of the franchise have most likely now marked that date on their calendars. If you can hold off until the next day, though, there's something even better, as in addition to the toy, you'll also get exclusive Pokémon Trading Card Game cards!
The lineup consists of a half-dozen Pocket Monster species, including Riolu, Ralts, and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet starters Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. Then, of course, there's Pikachu, whose card features an adorable illustration of the franchise mascot sitting in a restaurant booth and about to dig into a delicious hamburger. Well, actually, judging from the way the cutlery on the table is oriented, he's asking for a bite of the burger ordered by the Pokémon Trainer who's taken him along on this McDonald's run, but come on, get serious, there's no way anyone would ever say no to such a heart meltingly cute appeal.

With a total of six designs, though, you might be wondering how many Happy Meals you're going to have to order in order to snag the Pikachu card, but that's where the deal gets really sweet. Each Happy Meal comes with two Pokémon cards, and one of them is guaranteed to be Pikachu.
However, while the odds are in your favor, time isn't necessarily on your side. McDonald's is yet to say how long the Pokémon Happy Meal will be available for, but usually each toy theme runs for about two weeks. The Pokémon cards, however, will only be given out on August 9, 10, and 11. And should you decide to go on august 8 as well to make extra-sure you don't miss out on the toys, ending up with a bunch of leftover McDonald's French fries in the process, we've got some tasty ideas for how to reuse them.

Disneyland is celebrating its 70th anniversary: Here's a look at the park then and now
Walt Disney crosses the drawbridge that serves as the entrance to Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland, in Anaheim, Calif., on April 16, 1955. By JOHN SEEWER Disneyland is celebrating 70 years of being 'The Happiest Place on Earth.' The summerlong festivities in southern California include the opening of 'Walt Disney – A Magical Life,' a show featuring a lifelike animatronic of the company's founder that debuted Thursday and also marks Disneyland's official anniversary. Walt Disney's vision of creating a getaway for families revolutionized the amusement park industry with immersive attractions featuring robotic figures and holographs, and shows and characters appealing to children. The park's emphasis on storytelling and attention to detail is still evident today in theme parks across the world. Disneyland now ranks as the world's second-most visited theme park, closely behind Magic Kingdom at Disney World in Florida, which opened in 1971. According to the Themed Entertainment Association, Disneyland drew more than 17 million people in 2023, bouncing back from an unprecedented 13-month closure during the COVID-19 pandemic. The park was built on what was once orange groves in Anaheim, just outside Los Angeles. It opened on July 17, 1955 — a year that also saw Ray Kroc start his first McDonald's restaurant and Jim Henson introduce his original version of Kermit the Frog. Disneyland's first day was famously a disaster, all broadcast on a live television special. The park opened just a year after its groundbreaking and simply wasn't ready for its big day. Attractions broke down, there weren't enough restrooms, food and drinks were in short supply, traffic backed up for miles and the shoes of the first guests sank into freshly paved asphalt. Among the original rides still around today are the Mad Tea Party, Peter Pan's Flight and Jungle Cruise. The cost to get in that first year was $1 for adults and 50 cents for children, although tickets for most rides were an additional 10 to 50 cents. Today, a one-day ticket starts at more than $100 and on some days can double that. Over the years, the park has hosted U.S. presidents, kings and queens, and countless celebrities. A few even got their start at Disneyland — actor Kevin Costner was a skipper on the Jungle Cruise and comedian Steve Martin worked at a magic shop where he learned about being a performer. The Walt Disney Co. now has six resorts with a dozen theme parks worldwide. The parks have become one of its most successful and important business segments. The resort in Anaheim now includes Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney, a shopping and entertainment district. While Disneyland still features many of the touches Walt Disney oversaw himself, the original park is ever-evolving, sometimes to the dismay of its loyal fans. Some of the moves have been made to keep up with a changing society, while others have been made to introduce more thrilling attractions with the latest technology to keep up with competitors. Just last year, Disney received approval to expand its Southern California theme parks. A new parking structure and transit hub are the first steps in its plans to open more space for new attractions. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Chiikawa Bakery launches a limited-time menu of sunburned characters and refreshing drinks
These summer-exclusive character breads are almost too cute to eat. Almost. The rays of the summer sun have started to beat down on Japan, leading many of its residents to cover up in long-sleeved clothes or copious amounts of sunscreen. On the other hand, there are many cartoon characters who are revelling in the sunlight and catching some rays, such as the latest McDonald's range of Hello Kitty toys. Next up for the bronzing treatment arw Chiikawa and its friends, who star in a web manga originally published on Twitter that has been turned into an anime. For a limited time this summer at the Chiikawa Bakery near Harajuku in Omotesando, Tokyo, a new seasonal line-up of delicious, sunburned treats joins the regular collection to create unforgettable memories of overwhelming cuteness. The three varieties of bread, each in the form of one of the characters, each cost 580 yen (US$3.95) and all sport beautiful suntanned looks, created through the clever use of coffee spray. ▼ Chiikawa Bread (Sunburned Version), filled with custard cream ▼ Hachiware Bread (Sunburned Version), filled with chocolate cream ▼ Usagi Bread (Sunburned Version), filled with caramel cream Naturally, being summer, you'll also want plenty of fluids to keep you hydrated, so the bakery is also supplying takeout drinks in their own original cups, limited to two per customer. ▼ Iced Tea (590 yen) ▼ Iced Coffee (590 yen) ▼ Iced Cafe Latte (690 yen) ▼ Iced Matcha Latte (720 yen) ▼ Apple Soda Tea (790 yen) ▼ Orange Soda Tea (790 yen) Customers who order one of the above drinks will receive an extra bonus in the form of an original coaster at the checkout, randomly selected from twelve designs. Due to the popularity of the Chiikawa Bakery, daily admission is limited, and so online ticket reservations (which can be made here) are highly recommended. Customers reserving advance tickets for dates starting August 1 will receive a limited edition trading card. There are nine unique designs up for grabs, and will be released in two waves, finishing on January 31, 2026. Do note that walk-in customers are not eligible for the cards, nor can you choose the design. If you do brave the scorching sun outdoors to sample these summer snacks, be sure to lather up in sunscreen, if you're not keen to end up looking like one of the breads yourself. Or if you'd rather explore the cuteness of Chiikawa on a larger scale, be sure to check out Chiikawa Park when it opens on July 28.
