Liverpool transfer news: 'Sad' Alexander Isak verdict as forgotten star offered escape route
Liverpool are showing no signs of slowing down in the transfer market as they aim to get Alexander Isak 's mega transfer over the line.
The Swedish hitman is a major target for the Reds despite already splashing out nearly £300million on transfers this summer, with the arrival of Hugo Ekitike for £79m adding yet another high profile arrival and showing the club mean business this season.
Isak could cost Liverpool around £150m and the striker has reportedly stated his desire to move to Anfield - with the departure of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich for £65.5m freeing up more funds for Arne Slot to spend.
But the Dutchman may have to also rubber stamp the exits of more unwanted stars at Anfield before he can press on with any incomings. Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa are just two players who have been linked with exits.
Mirror Football has rounded up some of the biggest Liverpool transfer news and rumours.
Owen on Newcastle
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool have enough financial muscle left to complete an ambitious swoop for Newcastle star Alexander Isak, given that the Swedish star would cost at least £150m.
Isak still has three years left on his contract at St James' Park and Newcastle are in no rush to sell him, but their hand could be forced after the player told the club he wanted to explore his options.
Newcastle have Champions League football to offer Isak but it appears his head has been turned.
Owen, who played for both clubs, said he sympathised with Newcastle potentially losing a player of Isak's calibre but insisted money would not be the driving force behind the move.
"If any decent player becomes available, the big boys come and eventually they move," he told talkSport.
"It's sad because you want competition in football, but you put yourself in a player's point of view. If you didn't have ambition, then football would be nothing. You've got one short career trying to win as much as you can, trying to get to the best team.
"That's what drives everybody. People will say it's money, it's not. Most footballers just want to be in the best teams, in the best competitions and winning trophies. Unfortunately, this scenario will never, ever change."
Diaz pays tribute to Liverpool
Some Liverpool fans will be gutted to lose a top player like Luis Diaz, especially after he showed his value to the team since his arrival in 2022, scoring 41 times across four seasons.
He'll now be plying his trade for Bayern Munich after sealing a big £65.5m move to Germany but he'll have fond memories of winning three domestic cups under Jurgen Klopp and the Premier League title under Arne Slot last season.
The Colombian made sure he let Reds supporters know how much he "treasured" his time at Anfield with a moving post paying tribute to the club.
"Three years and a half that I'll treasure forever," he wrote on social media. "I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together. I have met incredible people, fabulous colleagues, coaches who helped me a lot, and extraordinary fans.
"Liverpool is, indeed, a special team, and I will keep everyone in my heart. The cycle ends here, and it is so gratifying to look back and realise how happy we were. Not only because of the trophies we won, but for the union and friendship that made it all possible. There were ups and downs, as there always are, but there was always truth. As it should be in a family.
"It's good to be leaving with the feeling of a duty fulfilled, and, most of all, to be leaving a champion. It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn't lost one of ours in such a tragic way. As I said, and I repeat, I carry everyone with me in my heart, but one of them in particular: Diogo. I will never forget him. We will never forget him. Thank you for everything."
Juventus
Federico Chiesa is being strongly tipped to leave Liverpool after being left out of the club's travelling group to Asia for pre-season, though it has emerged it's because he is being assessed over a minor medical issue.
Even still, the Italian must be getting increasingly frustrated at his repeated fitness setbacks and might fancy a change of scenery after a difficult first year at Liverpool that saw him start only four games in all competitions last season.
Fellow Italian Luca Toni - a former star of Bayern Munich and Juventus - has urged the Turin outfit to bring Chiesa back to the club on loan.
It's been less than a year since Liverpool signed the winger from Juventus for around £12m but Toni feel the player has a lot left to give.
'If I were Juventus, I'd bring Chiesa back on loan,' he told La Gazetto della Sport. 'He's out of the Liverpool project, so I'd bet on his desire to redeem himself."
Chiesa was forced out of Juventus last summer after being told by new boss Thiago Motta that he had no future at the club, with the Italian telling him to find a new club.

Liverpool 'name England international among two candidates on their centre back shortlist' - as Arne Slot looks to bolster his defensive options ahead of their title defence
Liverpool are reportedly intent on bringing in defensive cover this summer as they prepare to begin their Premier League title defence. On Monday Arne Slot 's side returned to Anfield for the first time since Diogo Jota 's death and played a pair of friendlies against LaLiga side Athletic Bilbao. Fielding two separate teams on the same day exposed the lack of depth in the heart of defence, with Andy Robertson and academy product Trey Nyoni deputising in the position for the first game. With Virgil van Dijk unavailable through illness and Joe Gomez still nursing an injury suffered during the club's pre-season tour Liverpool were forced to deploy Wataru Endo alongside their only available senior centre back in Ibrahima Konate. This, combined with Jarell Quansah's move to Bayer Leverkusen last month, highlighted the Reds' need for defensive reinforcements and the club are reportedly already hard at work identifying potential options. Mail Sport revealed earlier this summer that Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is on the club's radar. The England international has less than 12 months remaining on his current deal at Selhurst Park and reports suggest he would be keen on a move to Merseyside. Newcastle repeatedly pushed to sign Guehi last summer as a protracted saga unfolded surrounding his future before he ultimately remained at Palace. According to a report from The Times, the club are also keeping tabs on Parma's Giovanni Leoni. At just 18, Leoni already commands a starting place for the Serie A club and earned plaudits for his performances last season as the club managed to avoid relegation in their first season back in the top flight. Meanwhile Conor Bradley is expected to miss Sunday's Community Shield against Crystal Palace through injury. Bradley did not feature in either of Monday's friendlies after suffering a knock in training and is now in a race to bit fit for the start of the Premier League season. Liverpool get their campaign underway next Friday as they welcome Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth to Anfield.

Ben Doak has handed Scotland head coach Steve Clarke a timely boost by netting for Liverpool in a dazzing pre-season display against Athletic Bilbao. The 19-year-old winger is fit again after injury and was handed a start in the first of two friendlies which were staged back-to-back at Anfield on Monday night against the Spanish side. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The opening match, featuring a mix of first-team stars and youngsters, saw the Reds claim a 4-1 victory with Doak on the scoresheet and also having a major hand in another goal. The second match also saw the hosts emerge victorious 3-2 thanks to Mo Salah and a Cody Gakpo double. Ben Doak celebrates scoring for Liverpool in the friendly win over Athletic Bilbao at Anfield. (Photo by) | Getty Images In match one, Liverpool went two goals up inside five minutes as another emerging talent - 16-year-old England youth Rio Ngumoha - opened the scoring before Doak provided the cross for Ngumoha to nod down for Darwin Nunez to add a second. Doak twice went close to adding a third, being denied by the woodwork from a tight angle before a sensational half-volley from 25 yards drew a diving save from Bilbao goalkeeper Alex Padilla. But the former Celtic youth got his goal three minutes before half-time as he burst past his marker in the box before firing an effort across goal which Padilla only succeeded in diverting into the net when it appeared to be going wide. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Doak was then replaced on 56 minutes before Harvey Elliot added a fourth but his eye-catching performance bodes well for Clarke and Scotland ahead of next month's World Cup qualifiers away to Denmark and Belarus. The teenager has impressed for Scotland since being handed the first of his six caps in September last year and was sorely missed in the Nations League play-off loss to Greece in March as well as the defeat to Iceland in June. He spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough in the Championship where he had a big impact with three goals and seven assists in 24 appearances prior to suffering a thigh injury in February which ended his season prematurely and ruled him out of the last two Scotland camps. Doak will now be raring to go for the upcoming internationals but where he is playing his club football by the time the crucial fixtures come around remains to be seen. And new signing Oliver Antman is IN ahead of tonight's crunch clash with Viktoria Plzen. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 3 Oliver Antman could make his Rangers debut TONIGHT Credit: Willie Vass 3 Mikey Moore has been training but won't feature tonight Credit: Willie Vass 3 Moore travelled with the Rangers squad to Motherwell Credit: PA Having already seen-off Panathinaikos, the Gers now take on the Czech side in the third qualifying round. A place in the play-offs is up for grabs, with the winner of tie advancing to take on either Red Bull Salzburg or Club Brugge for a coveted place in the league phase. The first leg takes place at Ibrox tonight. And Russell Martin could have his most recent signing to call upon. Finland international Oliver Antman completed a £4million switch from Dutch club Go Ahead Eagles on Monday, becoming the club's ninth summer signing. It was done just in time to see him added to the squad and he could now make a stunning debut TONIGHT. At this stage of the competition, clubs are able to make two changes to their squad the night before a game takes place. That meant that Rangers could have also added Mikey Moore, who joined on loan from Tottenham last week. But the 17-year old's name does NOT appear in the updated squad list on the Uefa website. Due to the winger's young age, it's thought his registration and international clearance could take longer. Russell Martin doubles down on Rangers squad criticism It was that red tape that prevented him from being involved against Motherwell at the weekend and looks to be same as far as tonight's crunch European clash goes. The player to drop out of the squad is Thelo Aasgaard. The £3.5m recruit from Luton hasn't been able to make his Gers debut yet after sustaining an injury in pre-season More to follow...
