AAP and BJP exchange barbs over portraits, meeting ‘leak'

The Delhi Assembly has issued breach of privilege notices to Leader of the Opposition Atishi and three other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs for allegedly leaking internal discussions from a General Purposes Committee (GPC) meeting that adopted a proposal on installing portraits of 'national icons' in the Assembly premises.
The notices, issued on Thursday, follow a complaint filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs and come amid a controversy over the proposed installation of a portrait of pioneering educator and social reformer Savitribai Phule.
BJP complaint
While the BJP accused AAP of distorting facts and violating protocol by publicly misrepresenting a verbal suggestion as a blocked proposal, AAP leaders hit back, alleging that the BJP's 'casteist mindset' was behind the refusal to honour Phule, and slammed the notices as an attempt to 'suppress their voices'.
According to the formal complaint filed on May 22 by Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, BJP chief whip Abhay Verma, and party leaders Raj Kumar Bhatia and Tilak Ram Gupta, AAP members made a passing suggestion about Phule's portrait but falsely portrayed it as a rejected proposal.
'We were shocked to find out that AAP twisted facts and claimed during a press conference that the ruling party opposed their proposal to include Mata Savitribai Phule's portrait,' the complaint stated.
BJP leaders argued that revealing the committee's internal deliberations was a 'serious breach of privilege' and accused AAP of pursuing a 'political and mischievous agenda'.
'There was no written proposal,' said Assembly officials, who confirmed that the matter was raised only verbally. Instead, the committee approved portraits of V.D. Savarkar, Dayananda Saraswati, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, as announced by Speaker Vijender Gupta following the GPC meeting on Wednesday.
A senior Delhi Assembly official called the AAP's remarks false, misleading, and politically motivated, and warned of possible action. The Secretariat urged media caution on reporting privileged proceedings. Speaker Gupta declined to comment.
The Assembly Secretariat has asked Ms. Atishi, along with AAP MLAs Kuldeep Kumar, Veer Singh Dhingan, and Chaudhry Zubair to submit written responses to the complaint by May 30.
AAP counter
Reacting strongly, former Deputy Speaker and senior AAP leader Rakhi Bidlan accused the BJP of harbouring a 'patriarchal mindset'.
'This is not just political arrogance, it is a direct insult to the legacy of India's first Dalit woman educator,' Ms. Bidlan said, vowing that AAP will not allow the BJP's disdain for social icons to prevail.
'When our MLAs tried to bring the issue to the public through the media, a dictatorial attitude was adopted, and four MLAs were served notices. Mata Savitribai Phule is not an ordinary personality. She opened the first school for girls in 1848,' Ms. Bidlan said.
Mr. Kumar echoed the sentiment, saying demanding the portrait of the Dalit teacher in the Assembly is such a 'grave offence' that they were served privilege violation notices.
'Perhaps, in the BJP's eyes, this is a crime punishable by hanging,' he added.

But we have been working hard on all fronts, right from social justice to political justice. When we say political justice, we are talking about representational politics. Our Bihar team, led by Pradesh Congress Committee president Rajesh Kumar, will announce its committee soon. We will try for a much better social balance than in past teams. * There has been criticism that choosing Rajesh Kumar, a Dalit leader, as the state Congress chief is just symbolism… No. Rajesh Kumar has been associated with the party for a long time and has contributed immensely to the organisation. Along with Congress Legislature Party leader Shakil Ahmad Khan, he is our Bihar face. Rahul Gandhi has been focusing on representation from as many social segments as possible. We have also redone our district committees, giving good representation to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Extremely Backward Classes (EBC), minorities, and Dalits. * What is the Congress's strategy to convince voters? We have been talking about migration, unemployment, poor quality education, and greater participation of women in politics, government and non-government sectors. Rahul Gandhi has been addressing 'Samvidhan Bachao (Save the Constitution)' meetings. He also met EBC, OBC, and Dalit students in Darbhanga. The Bihar government has been so terrified by our plans to reach out to students that they tried their best to stop Rahul Gandhi from meeting the students. Haven't BJP and JD(U) leaders organised functions in schools and colleges? But they foisted a false case on our leader for holding a meeting without permission. * What do you make of the Centre announcing a caste enumeration in the next population Census? They have done so under our pressure. The demand for a nationwide caste census has been our agenda. We still think that the NDA is not serious about it. Their conscience is not clear. Had it been so, it would have devised policies as per the findings of the Bihar caste-based survey. But we will keep talking about it in a phased manner through meetings and yatras. Rahul Gandhi is in Nalanda on June 6 to further pitch for social and political justice. * How are the Congress's ties with the RJD? Is Tejashwi Yadav the leader or the chief ministerial face of Mahagathbandhan? Our INDIA bloc allies have their distinct strengths. We have to complement and supplement one another. The coordination committee is the supreme body for discussing all issues, from joint rallies to seat sharing. There have been coordination committee meetings at the district level, too. As for Tejashwi, he is the leader of the coordination committee. It is not the Congress's mandate to announce anyone as the CM face. It is the collective job of all allies to announce their leader at the right time. * Is the 'jungle raj' tag for the RJD holding the Congress back from declaring Tejashwi as the Mahagathbandhan's leader? The real 'jungle raj' is being witnessed under the current NDA regime. One can see the rising graph of crime in recent times. There has been too much interference from the bureaucracy in governance. * Is there any concern that you may end up contesting fewer seats as part of the alliance since it won just 19 of the 70 seats it contested in 2020? We cannot speculate on seat sharing. We aim for a strong Congress that will make the INDIA bloc stronger. Our campaign is not region-specific; our focus is on quality seats. Seat sharing will be completed well ahead of the polls. * What is the Congress's view on National Students' Union of India (NSUI) in-charge Kanhaiya Kumar's role? Can one see Tejashwi and Kanhaiya sharing the dais during campaign events? Kanhaiya is a very good orator. People come to listen to him. He connects well with people. We hope Tejashwi and Kanhaiya share the dais. This is more a matter of perception than reality. We have a vast line-up of leaders who will campaign in Bihar. Besides national party president Mallikarjun Kharge and LoP Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Sachin Pilot, and other senior leaders will campaign. * Will the NDA's nationalism pitch following Operation Sindoor make things tough for the Opposition in the elections? Ours is a win-win alliance. On the contrary, we see the NDA constituents wavering. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has switched sides so many times that we will not be surprised if he does it again. LJP (RV) leader Chirag Paswan looks non-committal towards the NDA with his recent statements (on wanting to contest the Assembly polls). Rashtriya Lok Morcha leader Upendra Kushwaha is also wavering. As for the nationalistic pitch around Operation Sindoor, US President Donald Trump exposed the myth of Narendra Modi's nationalism with his social media post on brokering the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. * How big a factor will Nitish Kumar be? Nitish Kumar is a nice person. But he is no longer running his party or the government. A handful of people have taken control over him. He has not been able to provide employment. Nor could he bring big industries to Bihar as was done during the Congress's rule. Whatever little employment the Bihar government could give, it was during the Mahagathbandhan government. * Will Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor be a factor in the Assembly polls? He is trying hard to be a factor. But he is struggling.

Anubrata Mondal threatened a police officer & may go scot-free. It's a blot on TMC
Every other word in the audio clip is a four-letter expletive and has had to be bleeped out. Mondal's foul comments are legendary. He once publicly ordered TMC workers to bomb the police and to set fire to the homes of political foes. No action was ever taken against him. But in the leaked audio clip of a phone conversation that went viral last week, his language crossed too many Lakshman Rekhas. Mondal is heard warning a police inspector, Liton Halder, with physical harm and threatening his wife and mother with rape. Anubrata Mondal is one of Mamata Banerjee's favourites. Keshto, she calls him. The chief of the Birbhum wing of the Trinamool Congress, he ensures victory in every election. And he raises funds: he just spent two years in Tihar for links with cattle smuggling. For a party that boasts numerous women MPs, multiple welfare schemes for women, and is led by a woman, the whataboutery that followed is a blot. If a BJP leader can abuse Col Sofiya Qureshi or a Congressman's mother on public TV, then why target Mondal, was the TMC chorus. A few who condemned Mondal mumbled. Mamata should have publicly rebuked him and kept police morale up by ordering the strictest action. But she did not. Instead, the legal cell of Birbhum police sent a letter to the lead anchor of a top Bengali TV news channel, ABP Ananda. It threatened action 'without any further notice' if the channel continued to air the controversial audio clip as it 'tarnished the image of the police'. As if Mondal had not damaged the image of the police already with the abuse he had hurled at the inspector in charge of Bolpur police station, and then ignored police summons for days. Seemingly with impunity. The Anubrata Mondal case The police did file an FIR against Mondal, charging him with two cognisable offences—sexual harassment and use of criminal force to deter public servants from doing their duty—and two non-cognisable offences. These could put a common man behind bars or at least force the accused to seek anticipatory bail. But not Mondal. Summoned to the police station twice—on 31 May and 1 June—he sent a medical certificate prescribing him five days of bed rest. But the certificate, reports claim, is dubious. It was issued by a government doctor, not on his official pad but on the letterhead of a private medical college, allegedly in complete violation of service rules. The doctor has since been incommunicado, at least for the media. Displaying perhaps the only dash of diffidence in this drama, Mondal arrived at the police station on Thursday, sneaking in through the back gate in a friend's car, minus his trademark white SUV, security staff, and pilot. Two hours of interrogation later, he left looking unruffled. He reportedly told the police he had no memory of any conversation with Inspector Liton Halder at 11.30 pm on 28 May because he was not in his senses after taking his sleeping pills. Police have reportedly confiscated two cell phones of Inspector Halder, the recipient of the abusive call. Meanwhile, they have let the alleged abusive caller, Mondal, keep his own. Which begs the question: Who taped the phone conversation? Between abuses, Mondal is heard mocking Halder, saying, 'I know you are recording the conversation.' If that was so, did Halder also leak it? The police will address this issue eventually. Congress and BJP leaders are worried that Halder may end up suspended from service, and Mondal may go scot–free. Also read: Ashoka founder's letter shows we only celebrate moral courage if there's no real cost The Sharmistha Paloni case The Anubrata Mondal case has unfolded parallel to the case of Sharmistha Paloni, raising the question, are the police becoming overzealous, selectively? As Mondal walked out of the Bolpur police station on Thursday, the 22-year-old YouTuber, a Kolkata girl studying law in Pune, got interim bail from the Calcutta High Court. She had posted comments on social media that another Kolkata resident had found offensive to Muslims and complained to the police. Panoli had immediately deleted her post and apologised. But the West Bengal police labelled her an absconder, arrested her from her Gurugram workplace, and brought her to Kolkata, where she was sent to judicial custody. The police defended their action, which some felt was high-handed, and denied hounding the student. But it is now under the scanner after a twist in the tale. The Kolkata resident Wazahat Khan Qadri Rashidi, who had filed the complaint against Panoli, is now charged with the same offence: posting material on social media that is offensive, in this case, to Hindus. Rashidi is absconding, reportedly since Sunday. All eyes are now on how quickly the West Bengal police track him down. Communal post case: Influencer Sharmistha Panoli walks out of jail; arrested over controversial video
NEW DELHI: A law student, Sharmistha Panoli arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through a social media video walked out of Alipore Women's Correctional Home on Friday, a day after the Calcutta high court granted her interim bail. Panoli was arrested by Kolkata Police on May 30 from a hotel in Gurugram for a video she had posted on 'Operation Sindoor', which was deemed communal in nature. Though she deleted the video and issued a public apology on May 15, an FIR was later registered against her at the Garden Reach police station in Kolkata. The Calcutta high court on Thursday noted that the complaint did not disclose any cognisable offence and granted her interim bail. Conditions of the bail include surrendering her passport, cooperating with the investigation, and furnishing a personal bond of Rs 10,000. The court also directed that she be given police protection, citing threats she had received after the video went viral. Panoli's arrest had sparked political backlash, with BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari calling it a case of 'police overzealousness' and 'atrocities'.
