Karathu can't believe what's happening to Perak
From glory to sorry days: Perak players celebrating with then coach Karl Weigang after they won the Malaysia Cup in 2000. Inset: Datuk M. Karathu, an iconic figure in Perak football, expressed his dismay over the club's decline.
PETALING JAYA: Perak's exit from the M-League next season is a big shame.
Veteran coach Datuk M. Karathu, an iconic figure in Perak football, expressed his dismay over the club's decline.
Karathu said it was shocking to see such a proud team, an eight-time Malaysia Cup champion, brought to the brink of collapse.
'Perak is a name respected across Malaysian football. This should not be happening,' he said.
Yesterday, Perak dropped a bombshell when they announced that they are out of next year's Super League.
Owners XOX have officially pulled out for the first time in a century.
Perak football, founded in 1921 (104 years ago), had played in every league until now. They have won the Malaysia Cup eight times.
Karathu, 82, who coached Perak on four occasions, blamed the management's inexperience and a lack of football expertise.
'I got the news through WhatsApp groups,' he said.
'I saw the management's statement - they claimed to have spent RM40 million but couldn't sustain the team. I believe inexperience played a big part.
'There were too many coaches compared to players. I saw a photo - it looked like there were two players for every coach!
'That's not how you run a club, especially when facing financial difficulties.'
Club chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azim Mohd Zabidi said the owners XOX Bhd had officially withdrawn from next season's Super League, bringing the state team's journey to a sad closure.
'We started with big dreams – to build something sustainable, something Perakians could be proud of. We believed that with your support, we could create a club that weren't just competitive, but rooted in community and passion,' said Azmi in a statement.
'We walked into a club burdened by nearly RM8mil in unpaid wages from the past. We cleared that, and we gave everything we had – time, belief, and nearly RM40mil over three years.
'But the reality is that the support we needed didn't grow the way we hoped. Support from Perak's public and private sectors never came in and the expected growth in Perak's subscriber base fell very short of expectations.
'The internal funds have now dried up, and we just can't keep going.
'Whatever funds remain - from merchandise, league dues, and our final budget – will go towards settling what we owe. It will not be enough, but it's all we have left.'
Azim said the team will continue to operate by selling their remaining merchandise, to raise funds.
Azim said the club were for sale and has asked any conglomerates or businesses to come forward and state their interest.

Malaysia, Poland poised to deepen ties in halal, defence, green hydrogen and digital tech
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Poland should showcase the capacity of both countries to work together in key sectors such as the halal industry, defence, digital technology and green hydrogen, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. At a joint press conference with President of Poland Andrzej Duda during Duda's official visit to Malaysia, Anwar said Poland's strength in modern and advanced technology makes it an increasingly important partner in the European Union and the region. "We should showcase the capacity of both Malaysia and Poland to work together in the fields that we have discussed, including the halal industry, and with your strength in modern technology," he said. Anwar noted that Poland's last high-level visit to Malaysia was in 1999, and since then, the country has achieved phenomenal growth, particularly in new technology, artificial intelligence, food technology and green energy. "I look forward to enhancing these bilateral relations in defence, food tech, trade, investments, digital technology, renewable energy and your (Poland) new expertise in green hydrogen," he said. The Prime Minister also welcomed the remarkable increase in bilateral trade, noting that Malaysia-Poland trade grew by 19.5 per cent from 2023 to 2024. "The exponential growth in trade is very much welcome -- a 19.5 per cent year-on-year increase from 2023 to 2024 is indeed a remarkable feat that shows the potential in our bilateral trade, investments and overall relations with the Republic of Poland," he added. According to Anwar, both leaders held extensive discussions on enhancing palm oil exports, wood and rubber products, and electrical and electronics collaboration, including exploring green hydrogen initiatives. Meanwhile, Duda, who arrived in Malaysia on June 9, for a three-day official visit, described the visit to Malaysia as significant, noting that Poland has undergone tremendous political and economic transformation since its last presidential visit in 1999. "Malaysia today is our second-largest trade partner in this region, and our bilateral trade has seen exponential growth," he said, adding that he hoped to see greater market access for Polish products in Malaysia. Duda said he had submitted a non-paper to Anwar, prepared by Poland's Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture, outlining proposals to expand the export of Polish agri-food products to Malaysia, including poultry meat and pork. He also urged Malaysian investors to consider opportunities in Poland, highlighting a wide range of incentives including grants, tax reliefs, preferential loans and workforce training. On energy cooperation, he said Poland is the fifth-largest hydrogen producer in the world and third-largest in the European Union, and is open to broad collaboration with Malaysia in green and renewable energy technologies. "We discussed the potential for research cooperation and development in fuels and hydrogen, and I assured the Prime Minister that Poland has skilled experts and a large market to support such ventures," he added.

Govt targets RM5bil from SST revision
Minister of Finance II Datuk Amir Hamzah Azizan PUTRAJAYA: The government expects to raise RM5bil from the revision of the sales tax and expansion of the service tax (collectively SST) to other services effective July. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, said the revision of the SST is driven by the need to improve the fiscal space of the federal government to improve the delivery of service to the public and lower the cost of living besides increasing the amount of cash assistance to the people. 'To ensure that the majority of the people are not affected by the SST revision, the Madani government is taking a targeted approach to ensure that basic goods and services are not taxed. 'In addition, various facilities are also provided to reduce the impact on micro, small and medium enterprises,' he told a media briefing here yesterday. Hence, Putrajaya has maintained zero sales tax on essential goods like rice, chicken meat, and vegetables but introduced a 5% tax on goods such as king crab, salmon, truffle and essential oil as well as raise the sales tax to 10% for products such as racing bicycles, antique hand paintings and tungsten scrap residues from 5%. It has broadened the tax base and imposed a 8% tax on services such as rental and leasing, financial and beauty services, and a 6% tax on construction, healthcare and education services. The Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia (CTIM) said the move to revise the SST was timely and a strategic use of indirect taxation to enhance government revenue without resorting to further direct taxes or reintroducing the goods and services tax at this juncture. 'As Malaysia's service-based economy continues to grow, CTIM recognises the government's effort to broaden the tax base by incorporating more sectors into the SST regime. 'This aligns with global trends and reflects a pragmatic approach to fiscal sustainability,' it noted in a statement. CTIM added to ensure a smooth transition, it urged the government to establish dedicated support channels – such as hotlines, emails, or live chats – manned by knowledgeable personnel to provide timely responses and minimise compliance risks. The collection of the SST from registered businesses will begin next month and for companies that now come under the tax space collection, it is expected to begin in September after such businesses have registered with the Customs department. This extension of the SST is accompanied by selected exemptions to avoid double taxation as well as ensure that certain essential services for Malaysian citizens are not taxed, Amir Hamzah added. Details are available on the Royal Malaysian Custom's department's website. Putrajaya collected about RM45bil in SST in 2024. According to the Finance Ministry's official first quarter 2025 Economic Report, the federal government's revenue for the quarter amounted to RM72.1bil, driven in part by a surge in SST receipts which totalled RM11.1bil. The reimplementation of SST in September 2018 saw the government collect RM5.4bil for the period. Annual SST collection in 2019 amounted to RM27.6bil, RM25.2bil in 2020, RM25.5bil in 2021, RM31.3bil in 2022 and RM35.4bil in 2023.

Top Indian dealmakers earn more than Singapore, HK peers
Foreign lenders such as Japan's Mitsubishi UFJ are continuing to expand in India. (EPA Images pic) SINGAPORE : Senior dealmakers in India are earning more than their counterparts in Singapore and Hong Kong, according to Bloomberg Intelligence, as global firms boost pay to attract top talent in the world's fastest-growing major economy. Heads and directors at investment banks in the South Asian nation's major financial hubs, such as Mumbai and free trade zone GIFT city, are paid 24% more than their peers in Hong Kong and 37% higher than in Singapore, according to Bloomberg Intelligence's analysis of a survey by recruiter Michael Page. For the year, India's bankers are set for pay rises of more than 9%, compared to 4%-5% in the two Asian cities, Bloomberg Intelligence senior analyst Sarah Jane Mahmud wrote in a note today. The report cited survey data from consulting firm Aon. India is seeing a boost from a rebound in investments even as global trade uncertainties weigh on the country's broader outlook. Foreign lenders such as Japan's Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc are continuing to expand in the South Asian nation, while Julius Baer Group Ltd is seeking to triple the wealth assets it manages, the Bloomberg Intelligence report said. Investors have refocused on India's lower relative exposure to the US during the recent turbulence in global trade policy. M&A volumes have picked up and dealmakers say the country is well positioned to lure more overseas capital from private equity and sovereign wealth funds. While India has higher income tax rates than Singapore and Hong Kong, its lower cost of living may be a draw, according to the report. Pay for wealth managers in India, however, continued to lag behind that of Hong Kong and Singapore by 47%-58%, only a slight improvement from last year, the report showed.
