Yoga marks beginning of inner peace becoming global policy: PM Modi
Addressing the 11th International Yoga day participants here, Modi said when India proposed June 21 to be celebrated as International Yoga day in the United Nations, in a short time 175 countries accepted it.
Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Jun 21 (PTI) Yoga leads people on a journey towards oneness with the world while the International Yoga Day marks the beginning of the ancient practice for humanity where inner peace becomes global policy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday.
'My request to the world– let this Yoga day mark the beginning of Yoga for humanity 2.0 where inner peace becomes global policy,' he said.
He further said Yoga leads us on a journey towards oneness with world.
Further, Yoga is for everyone, beyond boundaries, backgrounds, age or ability, the PM said.
Yoga is a great personal discipline, also a system that takes people from 'Me to We' and is the pause button that humanity needs to breath, balance to become whole again, he added.
The PM later joined the volunteers to perform Yoga.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also spoke at the event.
Naidu said Modi made Yoga popular not only in India but across the world, turning it into a global wellness movement.
Naidu highlighted that Yoga Day is being celebrated in more than 175 countries, across 12 lakh locations with the participation of over 10 crore people.
'I am thanking our visionary Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making Yoga popular not only in India (but also) across the world. He started International Yoga Day through the United Nations and made Yoga a global wellness movement,' said Naidu. PTI STH GDK SA

Centre for exempting insurance premium from GST: Samrat Choudhary
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) The Centre has proposed exempting life and health insurance premium from GST, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and convenor of insurance GoM Samrat Choudhary said on Wednesday. Currently, health and life insurance premium attracts 18 per cent GST. The Group of Ministers (GoM) on life and health insurance will submit its report to the GST Council. The report will also include views and concerns expressed by some state finance ministers, he said. 'The Centre's proposal is clear that the insurance sector's individual and family (policies) should be exempt from GST. This has been discussed and the GoM report will be presented to the Council," Choudhary told reporters here after the meeting of the GoM. 'All members have given their approval for lowering rates. Some states have given their own views," he said, adding a final call on rates will be taken by the Council. Choudhary is the convenor of the 13-member state GoM on health and life insurance. The Centre's proposal on insurance is part of the overall next-Gen GST reform proposal under which goods and services tax will be levied at 2 rates– 5 and 18 per cent — based on categorisation of products as merit and standard. The 13-member GoM on health and life insurance was set up in September to suggest tax rates. The panel, which includes ministers from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Meghalaya, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, has been mandated to submit its report to the GST Council by October end. In 2023-24, the Centre and states collected Rs 8,262.94 crore through GST on health insurance premium, while Rs 1,484.36 crore was collected on account of GST on health reinsurance premium. Four new drugs for rare diseases on anvil; five medications for 7 ailments in mkt: VK Paul
New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) Four new drugs for rare diseases are in the pipeline expected to be launched soon while five medications for seven illnesses have already been introduced in the market alleviating suffering of patients, Niti Aayog member (health) Dr VK Paul said on Wednesday. Speaking at an event here, he noted that generic medications launched by the local companies have led to immense savings for the people suffering from rare diseases. Currently, 63 rare diseases are included under National Policy for Rare Diseases on recommendation of Central Technical Committee for Rare Diseases (CTCRD). "For seven diseases, we have made significant progress. These seven diseases include Thalassemia, Wilson's disease and Cystic Fibrosis... there are five drugs which are now available in the market," Paul stated. Four other drugs are on the anvil, he added. He noted that NITI Aayog had shortlisted 13 disorders as a priority in 2023. Department of Pharmaceuticals Secretary Amit Agrawal said the government under the PLI scheme for pharmaceuticals has been able to support production of drugs to treat eight rare diseases. He noted that the government aims to treat rare diseases and orphan drugs as a strategic priority area among the priority areas with higher policy support. Novartis MD & Country President Amitabh Dube said rare diseases affect over 300 million globally, with 70-90 million in India. Acknowledging the progress made, he stressed the need for continued efforts to address the challenges faced by patients in the rare disease management. "We have to create an ecosystem that encourages and enables R&D, reduces regulatory delays and values innovation so treatments can reach Indian patients faster," he added. He also advocated sustainable financing solutions to ensure access to emerging, advanced therapies that exceed ₹ 50 lakh.

New NMC chief vows to boost regulatory mechanism amid graft charges in medical college inspections
New Delhi: Against the backdrop of allegations of corruption in the inspection of medical colleges, newly appointed National Medical Commission (NMC) chief Dr Abhijat Sheth said the apex body would conduct a root cause analysis of the assessment system to weed out any probable shortcomings and strengthen the regulatory mechanism to prevent such lapses in future. In an exclusive interview with PTI, Dr Sheth acknowledged that such allegations are a serious concern for the NMC, and he, along with his team, reviewed the overall processes and the problems immediately after joining the Commission as its chief. Dr Sheth, who also heads the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), was appointed as chairperson of the NMC in July. He took charge on August 5. In July, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) busted a network of officials of the Union Health Ministry, NMC, intermediaries and representatives of private medical colleges allegedly involved in a litany of "egregious" acts, including corruption and unlawful manipulation of the regulatory framework governing medical colleges. The agency has named 34 people in an FIR, including eight Health Ministry officials, a National Health Authority official and five doctors who were part of the NMC inspection team. Dr B N Gangadhar was the NMC chairperson then. In an immediate response to the FIR, the Commission initiated action, blacklisting four assessors and stopping the renewal of the existing undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) seats in six medical colleges. Dr Gangadhar resigned last October, citing health reasons. However, he continued to work in the position as his resignation was not accepted for want of a suitable candidate for the post. In his interview with PTI, Dr Sheth pointed out that the allegations of bribery were against a handful of staffers and officials, and considering the pan-India operations of the NMC, it would be unfair to put the whole organisation in the dock. "We take this as a serious concern and NMC has already adopted a zero tolerance policy against corruption, and they have taken immediate steps to regulate the people and institutions which are alleged in this issue, and appropriate action has been taken against them," Dr Sheth said. On how the assessment process can be improved, Dr Sheth said even before he joined, the NMC had already introduced some of the systems to do away with the physical dependency of inspection, which include institutionalisation of self assessment reports, deployment of central control and command centre for NMC inspections via CCTV surveillance and Aadhaar Enabled Bio-metric Attendance System (AEBAS) to monitor the faculty and the hospital staff. The NMC Act provides enough provisions to ensure that any deviation from the standard of practice will be taken seriously and appropriate regulatory or penal action will be taken to ensure that maximum compliance has been achieved, he said. "What we are going to do now, after my joining with our team is going to have a detailed root cause analysis of the problem, and based on the problem, we will find out shortcomings, any area for the improvements, and at the same time, we will ensure that one -- the regulatory mechanism has to be strengthened based on our root cause analysis, and also we need to take adequate steps to ensure the further prevention of such alleged incidences," he said. Regarding how the NMC will operate with the posts of presidents and members on various Boards like the UG Medical Education Board and Ethics and Medical Registration Board being still vacant, Dr Sheth said, "As far as I know, the posts of president of the UG Board and Ethics and Medical Registration Board are vacant. Also, the posts of members and part-time members are vacant. Filling of these posts is in process." "Until then, we have the president of the Post-Graduate Medical Education Board, Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) and myself, as well as a very strong admin team in place. Since these responsibilities have been entrusted to me, we will ensure that the operations do not suffer and the necessary reforms are initiated. We are expecting that all other posts will be filled up and the processes will get streamlined in the next couple of months," he added.
