Gold loses Rs3,400/tola
Gold prices in Pakistan slipped on Wednesday, mirroring a decline in international markets, as the precious metal continued to trade within a narrow range amid mixed market signals. In the domestic market, gold dropped by Rs3,400 per tola to settle at Rs345,800, while the 10-gram rate fell by Rs2,915 to Rs296,467, according to the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA).
Internationally, gold prices also retreated, with the rate falling by $34 to $3,276 per ounce (inclusive of a $20 premium). Silver prices in Pakistan were not spared either, slipping by Rs70 per tola to Rs3,427.
Analysts say gold remains range-bound due to conflicting forces in play. "Gold is currently oscillating between strong support at the $3,26070 zone and resistance around $3,360-80," said Adnan Agar, Director at Interactive Commodities. "The market lacks momentum and is stuck in this band. A breakout on either side could trigger decisive movement."
He pointed out that escalating geopolitical tensionssuch as developments in the US-China trade war or any worsening of India-Pakistan relationscould push prices higher. Conversely, signs of de-escalation or trade resolution could exert downward pressure.
Meanwhile, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) raised a total of Rs882.66 billion through two auctions held on April 30, 2025.
In the Pakistan Investment Bond - Floating Rate (PFL) Semi-Annual Auction, SBP accepted bids worth Rs320.66 billion, with Rs93.05 billion raised for 5-year bonds and Rs227.61 billion for 10-year bonds. No bids were accepted for the 2-year tenor. For the Market Treasury Bills (MTBs) Auction, SBP raised Rs562 billion across four tenors: Rs65.18 billion for 1-month, Rs151.66 billion for 3-month, Rs99.42 billion for 6-month, and Rs245.74 billion for 12-month bills.
Combined, these auctions successfully mobilised Rs882.66 billion, reflecting strong investor participation in government debt instruments. The Pakistani rupee recorded a slight gain against the US dollar on Wednesday, rising by 0.02% in the interbank market.
By the end of the trading session, the rupee closed up 5 paisa settling at 280.97 against the dollar, compared to 281.02 on Tuesday.
Globally, the US dollar remained stable during the day but was on track for its worst monthly performance since November 2022, as unpredictable trade policies under President Donald Trump created pressure on the greenback while benefiting currencies like the euro, yen, and Swiss franc.

Sony boosts PlayStation 5 prices in US
Sony has confirmed PlayStation 5 prices in the US will rise by around $50 from August 21 due to higher costs Sony has confirmed that prices for its PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States will increase by around $50 from August 21. The company cited rising costs and a weakening video games market as reasons for the decision. In a blog post, Isabelle Tomatis, vice president of global marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, described the current landscape as a "challenging economic environment." She added that the new pricing will affect all three PS5 models, including the recently launched Pro version, which will now carry a recommended retail price of $749.99. The standard edition of the PlayStation 5 will rise to $499.99. Sony confirmed that the cost of PS5 accessories will remain unchanged and that no further adjustments for other countries are planned at this time. The price rise follows concerns linked to tariffs imposed under the administration of US President Donald Trump. Imports of Japanese goods into the US currently face a 15% tariff, contributing to higher costs for companies such as Sony. Sony previously raised console prices in the UK and Europe earlier this year, pointing to inflation and currency fluctuations. Similar trends have been observed across the industry. Nintendo recently raised the cost of its original Switch console, and Microsoft increased prices for Xbox consoles and accessories in several regions. The move comes amid broader warnings from global businesses about the impact of tariffs on consumer prices. Adidas has estimated additional costs of 200m linked to US tariffs, while Nike said earlier this year that such measures could add $1bn to its expenses. Sony's announcement highlights the growing pressure on gaming companies to balance affordability for players with rising operating costs driven by trade policies and economic uncertainty.

PM reaffirms commitment to strategic partnership with China
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with China, pledging enhanced cooperation across key sectors including trade, investment, information technology, agriculture, mining, and industrial development. During a meeting with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Sharif hailed the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as a cornerstone of Pakistan's socio-economic transformation, highlighting the 'steady progress' of its second phase. A statement from the Prime Minister's Office underscored Sharif's emphasis on CPEC's growing role in enhancing regional connectivity and Islamabad's dedication to its successful implementation. Welcoming Wang to Islamabad, Sharif expressed 'deep appreciation' for Beijing's steadfast support of Pakistan's sovereignty and national development. He also reaffirmed Pakistan's backing of China on its 'core issues' and vowed to advance the countries' 'All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership' – a term reflecting their close diplomatic alignment. Sharif praised President Xi Jinping's 'visionary leadership' and recalled his 'cordial and productive' meeting with the Chinese leader during a state visit to Beijing last year. He expressed anticipation for further talks with President Xi and Premier Li Qiang during an upcoming visit to Tianjin and Beijing, where he will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's Council of Heads of State and ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Asia. For his part, Wang described Pakistan as China's 'ironclad friend' and pledged to elevate bilateral ties 'to new heights.' He lauded Pakistan's efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and reiterated Beijing's commitment to promoting regional peace and stability alongside Islamabad. The meeting was attended by senior officials including Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, and other Cabinet members. Notably, China's growing interest in Pakistan's mining and energy sectors coincides with Islamabad's renewed efforts to attract international investment in hydrocarbon exploration. The government dismissed recent claims of an exclusive oil exploration deal with the United States, affirming that firms from China, the US, Turkey, Kuwait, and other countries remain eligible for upcoming offshore and onshore bidding rounds. These bids involve strategic blocks in the Indus Basin and near Gwadar, with awards expected by October. Last week in the National Assembly, Energy Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik highlighted ongoing energy sector reforms, citing assessments of unconventional resources like tight gas and shale oil, which hold vast potential. Chinese firms, alongside international partners, are expected to play a critical role in exploiting these resources – aligned with Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative objectives of securing essential minerals and energy supplies.
