3-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer works his way back to rotation with Triple-A rehab start
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer topped out at 94 mph and threw 56 pitches on Friday night in his first Triple-A rehab outing since the Toronto right-hander suffered inflammation in his right thumb.
Scherzer, 40, signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal with the Blue Jays in February. Scherzer left his debut start with the team against Baltimore on March 29 after three innings because of soreness in his right lat muscle. The next day, Toronto put Scherzer on the injured list because of inflammation in his thumb.
Scherzer gave up two runs, struck out four and walked none over 4 1/3 innings in an anticipated start for Triple-A Buffalo against the Columbus Clippers. He waved in appreciation to a crowd that gave him a big ovation as he walked off the field.
'It'll be the most watched Triple-A game for a while,' Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. 'Or most uploaded Triple-A game.'
Scherzer did allow a 425-foot home run to one of the top 100 prospects in minor league baseball, Columbus left fielder C.J. Kayfus.
Schneider said ahead of Toronto's game Friday night in Philadelphia that the box score didn't matter to him. He wanted to make sure Scherzer came out of the game healthy.
'I want to see how Max feels tomorrow,' Schneider said. 'I could care less about the line score. I want to see 60-65 pitches. I want to see the fastball velo is good and he's coming out healthy.'
Scherzer has had two cortisone injections this season to relieve inflammation in his thumb. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list last month, but became eligible to return May 29.
Scherzer won World Series titles with Washington in 2019 and Texas in 2023. He won his first Cy Young Award after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 32 starts for Detroit in 2013. The eight-time All-Star earned consecutive NL Cy Young Awards with Washington in 2016 and 2017.
Schneider said Scherzer would likely need one more rehab start before he can join the Blue Jays' rotation. The Blue Jays are in second place behind the Yankees in the AL East.
'The plan right now is to meet us here and probably throw a bullpen and then go back and do another one,' Schneider said.

With the NBA draft right around the corner, now is the time to look at some past drafts and see what the Philadelphia 76ers have done in their history. The Sixers have selected some big-time players in the past who have become an important part of the fabric of the franchise's history. This edition continues to focus on 2014 as the Sixers made a draft night deal with the Orlando Magic. After already drafting Joel Embiid with the No. 3 pick earlier, the Sixers surprised many when they selected point guard Elfrid Payton with the No. 10 pick. It was a little shock due to Philadelphia having Michael Carter-Williams at the time fresh off winning Rookie of the Year. Advertisement However, the Sixers then flipped Payton to the Magic for the No. 12 pick which turned into Dario Saric from Croatia. After spending two more seasons overseas, Saric made his Sixers debut in the 2016-17 season and averaged 12.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists while finishing second in the Rookie of the Year race. He was a starter for Philadelphia on its 2018 playoff run and had a big game against the Boston Celtics in Round 2 of the postseason. The Sixers then flipped Saric to the Minnesota Timberwolves early in the 2018-19 season in the blockbuster Jimmy Butler deal. He has since played for the Wolves, Phoenix Suns, Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, and is now with the Denver Nuggets. He was a key member of Phoenix's 2021 finals team, but suffered a torn ACL in Game 1 against the Milwaukee Bucks. This edition continues to focus on the 2016 draft as the Sixers used the final of three first-round picks. After selecting Ben Simmons first overall and then Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot at No. 24, the Sixers selected Turkey swingman Furkan Korkmaz with the No. 26 overall pick. Advertisement After spending the 2016-17 season overseas, Korkmaz made his debut in the NBA in the 2017-18 season and played in only 14 games as a rookie. He played 48 games in 2018-19--while also making the first of many trade requests--and had his breakthrough in the 2019-20 season when he averaged 9.8 points and shot 40.2% from deep while playing in 72 games with 12 starts. Overall, Korkmaz requested a trade multiple times as he was unhappy with his playing time at different moments with the Sixers. He ended up spending seven seasons in Philadelphia before finally being sent to the Indiana Pacers at the 2024 deadline in the Buddy Hield deal. He averaged 6.8 points and 2.0 rebounds while shooting 35.6% from deep during his time in the league. He was waived by the Pacers after the trade.
