Dharwad: Building sustainable agri startups and farmer producing organisations (FPOs) strengthen farmers' group to handle input purchase and market challenges, said Professor Cherukumalli Srinivas Rao, director and vice-chancellor of Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi.Despite remarkable success in agriculture production and farm mechanisation, the required growth rate at country level in the production of agricultural commodities is challenged by weather vagaries, groundwater depletion, soil health deterioration, loss of soil carbon and biodiversity, Rao said while addressing the 38th annual convocation of University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad on Wednesday.He said sustainable rainwater management is crucial for food production stability, and rapid expansion of farm mechanisation is needed in view of labour costs.He said education in agriculture goes beyond classrooms.
"It is deeply rooted in the lives of farmers, their aspirations and their challenges. The students and faculty should engage with farming communities, learn from their experiences and work collaboratively to uplift rural livelihoods," Prof Rao said.Hailing the National Education Policy-2020, Prof Rao said skill development and industry orientation are key components of NEP-2020. Emphasis on internships and research experiences enhances employability and practical knowledge, he said.Showring praise on UAS Dharwad over its achievements in several fields, Prof Rao specially acknowledged the varsity's feat in receiving two patents-one for 'Buckwheat Upma Mix' and another for the 'Twin Ring Borewell Recharge Technique'.Karnataka governor and chancellor of University Thawar Chand Gehlot presented gold medals, degrees and cash prizes to the graduating students.Pro-Chancellor and agriculture minister N Chaluvarayaswamy was present. UAS vice-chancellor Prof PL Patil welcomed the gathering and briefed about the university's achievements in various fields. As many as 863 candidates, including 41 Doctoral, 197 Masters and 625 Bachelor's Degree were conferred on the occasion.

Vikrama Simhapuri University implements dual major programmes
The Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU) is implementing the New Education Policy-2020 by transitioning from a single-major programme, to a dual-major model. According to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Allam Srinivasa Rao, the move will equip students to gain skills in two distinct domains, significantly enhancing their career prospects. Prof. Rao chaired a coordination meeting on Monday at the university campus. The meeting was attended by principals of affiliated and constituent colleges offering Degree, PG, MBA, MCA, Physical Education, Education, and Law programmes. The V-C highlighted the effective implementation of the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) system, a digital platform that allows students to store credits obtained from various educational institutions across the country. He said: 'The system increases academic flexibility and supports skill development.' As part of the Yogandra 2025 initiative, the V-C suggested speeding up student enrolment by registering their details and maintaining data in digital format. He stressed the need for efficient coordination with affiliated colleges to streamline the process. VSU Registrar Dr. K. Sunitha said: 'Affiliated colleges will play a key role in implementing the restructured academic programs introduced by the university. Every institution must actively participate in the successful execution of these changes. It is essential to have a thorough understanding and effective implementation of the dual major programmes, the ABC system, and Yogandra 2025's enrolment procedures.'

Ranya Rao's mother moves High Court over continued detention despite bail
Kannada actor Ranya Rao's mother has filed a habeas corpus petition before the Karnataka High Court, challenging the legality of her daughter's detention in connection with a gold smuggling Rao was granted bail on May 20 by the Special Court for Economic Offences, but continues to remain in custody, due to a separate case that was filed under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974 (Cofeposa). advertisementRanya Rao was arrested at the Bengaluru airport on March 3 for allegedly attempting to smuggle 14.8 kg of gold from Dubai. A detailed personal search reportedly revealed gold bars concealed around her waist and calves using bandages and tissues. Additional gold bars and cut pieces were also found hidden in her shoes and front pockets. The seized gold, stated to be of 24-carat purity, was valued at over Rs 12.56 crore. Rao has been booked under the Customs Act and the Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act. During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Aravind Kamath submitted that objections had already been filed in the matter. The court subsequently adjourned the proceedings to June Rao and the second accused, Tarun Kondaru Raju, were granted bail by the Special Court for Economic Offences last month after asking both to furnish two sureties and execute a bond of Rs 2 lakh each. The bail was subject to conditions that the accused would not leave the country and would not repeat the offence. The bail was granted after officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence failed to submit the charge sheet within the stipulated period. The order was passed by Justice Vishwanath C due to the Cofeposa charges, Rao continues to be in preventive detention, as the legislation empowers authorities to detain individuals suspected of involvement in smuggling or activities detrimental to the conservation of foreign exchange.
