Two killed in separate collisions in Calgary on Friday

Calgary police traffic investigators are looking into the circumstances behind a pair of fatal crashes in the city on Friday.

The first occurred on Centre Street at 12th Avenue North around 4 p.m., when a 2002 Acura MDX SUV going south turned left, into the path of an oncoming 2004 Suzuki motorcycle.

'It is believed the motorcycle struck the SUV causing the rider to become dismounted and suffer critical injuries,' the Calgary Police Service said in a news release distributed on Saturday. 'The driver of the SUV was uninjured and remained at the scene.'

The motorcycle rider, identified by police as a man in his 60s, was taken to a hospital for treatment but he did not survive.

'Neither speed, alcohol, nor drugs are believed to be factors in the collision,' police said.

Later on Friday, around 9:45 p.m., a 2004 Honda Civic going north on Macleod Trail, about 500 metres north of Stoney Trail, struck a pedestrian crossing the road going eastward.

The driver wasn't hurt but the pedestrian, a man in his 50s, was declared dead at the scene, police said.

Speed and impairment are not thought to have played a role in the collision for the driver, but investigators are looking into the possibility alcohol and drugs could have been a factor for the pedestrian.

While speaking with the complainant, officers said they noticed signs of potential impairment. The driver was asked to take a roadside breath test, which they failed. The driver, a 41-year-old man from Grand Bend, was charged with impaired operation and failure or refusal to comply with demand.

One of the vehicles struck in the incident south of 17th Avenue near 30th Street S.E. was parked and occupied, while the other vehicle was travelling when it was hit. Two people sustained superficial injuries and didn't require treatment at a hospital, police said. 'Although the initial vehicle located by police was not the offending vehicle, it led to the arrest of the offender,' police added. 'The offending vehicle is still outstanding and police are continuing to investigate.'

Police say that around 10:30 p.m., on Ash Crescent S.E. in the Southview area, one vehicle hit another vehicle and then a parked vehicle as well before fleeing the scene. The collision injured two people, who sustained superficial injuries but didn't require transport to hospital. Police did locate a suspect who they believe to be the offender, but are still searching for the vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234.
