Drills done, Delhi prepared to tackle disaster
NEW DELHI: The national capital on Wednesday successfully conducted mock drills at 55 locations across its 11 revenue districts, as part of the 'Operation Abhyaas' exercise aimed at testing the city's disaster preparedness and response capabilities in a crisis situation.
Under the nationwide mega civil defence mock drill, prompted by the ongoing Indo-Pak tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 people, mock drills simulating multiple hostile scenarios like air raids, multiple fire emergencies, and search and rescue operations, among others, were carried out.
The drills were conducted in key locations including schools, government offices, busy markets, malls, airports and other critical areas. The exercise commenced around 4 pm with loud sirens signalling the start of the mock emergency scenarios.
Emergency response teams, including PCR vans, fire tenders, ambulances and other first responders, were present at the drill locations. Dog squads were also deployed to assist in the exercises. Notably, the fire tenders also sprayed water at the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) areas. Key locations where the drills were held included Khan Market, Lajpat Nagar Central Market, Townhall in Chandni Chowk, Select City Mall in Saket, and Fortis Hospital in Shalimar Bagh.
At the Townhall in Chandni Chowk, one of the city's busiest markets, a simulated airstrike was set up, with a building collapse scenario that trapped several people. During the exercise, one person was declared dead, two sustained serious injuries and one person suffered a fracture. Emergency teams worked to rescue and treat the injured, with a temporary hospital set up at the site to provide immediate medical care.

However, there was no official confirmation regarding whether the aircraft were of American or Chinese origin. Additionally, two high-value aircraft—believed to be AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) planes equipped with radar systems—were destroyed. A Pakistani combat drone and a C-130 transport aircraft were also neutralised. One of the standout moments of Operation Sindoor was India's S-400 air defence system shooting down an AWACS-type aircraft flying approximately 300 kilometres inside Pakistani airspace—an unprecedented feat. The aircraft could have been used for electronic warfare. Another AWACS aircraft was destroyed in a separate missile strike on Pakistan's Bholari Airbase. Rafale and Sukhoi fighter jets from the Indian Air Force also targeted enemy positions, reportedly destroying Chinese-made combat drones. According to sources, the Indian Air Force is still reviewing battlefield data, and further revelations about the scale of Pakistani losses are expected. Meanwhile, despite consistent denials and contradictory statements, Pakistan has admitted internally that the damage was far greater than publicly acknowledged. The Pakistani military has reportedly compiled a dossier confirming that the Indian Air Force struck at least eight more targets than initially disclosed. India had earlier stated it targeted 11 Pakistani airbases, including Nur Khan, Rafiqui, Murid, Sialkot, Pasrur, Sargodha, Sukkur, Chunian, Skardu, Bholari, and Jacobabad, as well as nine terror camps. Strikes were also reported in Lahore and Rawalpindi. However, Pakistan's internal assessment lists additional locations—Peshawar, Jhang, Hyderabad, Gujrat, Bahawalnagar, Gujranwala, Attock, and Chhor—as having been hit, none of which were officially acknowledged by Indian sources.

Pakistan's delegation in Moscow delivers PM Shehbaz Sharif's 'personal letter' to Putin
Amid ongoing tensions with India following the Pahalgam terror attack, a Pakistani delegation on Tuesday met Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow and delivered a personal letter from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to President Vladimir Putin. The delegation, which was led by Syed Tariq Fatemi, special assistant to the Pak PM, also updated Lavrov on the evolving situation in South Asia. While details of the letter were not made public, the visit is being closely watched as Islamabad seeks to maintain strategic ties with Moscow amid growing Russian alignment with India on key security issues. The timing of the meeting is significant, coming just days after a multi-party Indian parliamentary delegation, led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, visited Russia to highlight Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism. 'The special assistant handed over a letter addressed to President Vladimir Putin from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif,' the Pakistani Embassy in Moscow was quoted as saying by Russia's state-run TASS news agency. Lavrov said that a direct dialogue between Pakistan and India is needed to build mutual trust between the two countries, the news agency reported, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry. Fatemi also conveyed the prime minister's greetings and his country's desire to expand bilateral cooperation with Russia on a wide range of issues, including energy, transport links, trade and other areas. Pakistan announced last month to send a team of experts to foreign capitals to inform the world about the four-day conflict with India and also highlight its point of view regarding the conflict. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7. Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions.
