Premier League best bets: Everton vs. Leeds United odds, predictions, and picks
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. It's been a while since Everton fans could feel any sense of optimism going into a new season. The Toffees have been sweating out relegation for the past four seasons, finishing 16th, 17th, 15th, and 13th, respectively, and escaping the drop in dramatic fashion on a couple of occasions during that span. The days of narrowly escaping relegation are meant to be over, as the club showed signs of progress when David Moyes took over as manager in January. Everton went 8-7-4 (W-D-L) with a plus-8 goal difference in 19 matches under Moyes, and their statistical profile painted the Toffees as one of the best teams in the Premier League during that span. They'll try to carry that momentum in a tricky road match with Leeds United at Elland Road on Monday night. Moyes, who managed Everton during a successful spell between 2002 and 2013, is known for his ability to get his teams defensively organized, and he'll need to do just that against a Leeds side that will want to put the ball on the carpet and buzz around all night. Getty Images Stylistically, Everton should match up well with a team that wants the game to be frenzied. Leeds will want to attack directly off turnovers, while the Toffees will want the game to lumber ahead, hoping to keep things as predictable as possible. Leeds were brilliant in the Championship last season, but playing the high-risk style of soccer they want to deploy in the Premier League will be tough. This stylistic matchup should suit Everton, who carry significant value as a road underdog. Premier League: Five new signings who impressed on debut
The opening weekend of the Premier League campaign saw several new signings debut. We've profiled five players who made an instant impression on their first appearances for new clubs. Hugo Ekitike (Liverpool) Liverpool were made to work for three points in the season opener on Friday night, as Bournemouth gave the champions a scare at Anfield. The Reds had appeared in cruise control thanks largely to the performance of Hugo Ekitike, who followed his impressive outing in the Community Shield with another. The Frenchman fired Liverpool in front with a well-taken opener, keeping his cool after bundling a route through the Bournemouth defence. Ekitike turned provider for the second, doing well to hold up play and tee up Cody Gakpo. The 22-year-old was a real positive and has proven he can lead the line this season, regardless of the club's Alexander Isak pursuit. Tijjani Reijnders (Manchester City) Regular watchers of Serie A will not have been surprised to see Tijjani Reijnders shine this weekend. The Manchester City midfielder was superb on debut at Wolves, heavily involved in the opening three goals as the Citizens won 4-0 at Molineux. Reijnders scored and assisted at Wolves, though it's arguably his role in the opener that created the most excitement. His brilliant footwork past two challenges and superb scooped pass freed Rico Lewis to square for an Erling Haaland tap-in. Reijnders won't go down on the stat sheet, but it was a goal born from his creativity. Mohammed Kudus (Tottenham Hotspur) Mohammed Kudus crossed a capital divide this summer to sign for Tottenham Hotspur from London rivals West Ham. The Ghana international endured an inconsistent 2024/25 campaign but has hit the ground running in a Spurs shirt. Kudus was at his creative best in the 3-0 win over Burnley, setting up each of the opening two goals for Richarlison. The 25-year-old has led all Premier League players for take-ons over the last two seasons and has the ability to open up defences for Spurs. Omar Alderete (Sunderland) Sunderland handed out eight debuts at the weekend as Regis Le Bris' new-look squad made a flying start to their Premier League campaign. Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra were impressive in midfield, while Simon Adingra was a real livewire out wide. Omar Alderete earns the nod here, however, following an impressive cameo off the bench. The Paraguayan defender was introduced despite suffering from a knock and made an immediate impression. Alderete created the opening goal against West Ham with a fantastic cross for Eliezer Mayenda and defended astutely at the Stadium of Light. For a fee of £11m, he looks good value. Bryan Mbeumo (Manchester United) Manchester United might have lost their opener at Arsenal, but this was a defeat with a silver lining. New signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo posed problems for the visitors all game, registering nine shots between them. Mbeumo's pace and transition threat were a welcome addition to the Manchester United side, with the 26-year-old providing a physicality that was lacking last season. Though he'll have been disappointed not to have opened his goal account, this was a decent debut that has brought much-needed optimism to Old Trafford. Forest sign French forward Kalimuendo
French striker Arnaud Kalimuendo has signed a five-year contract with Nottingham Forest, the Premier League club announced on Monday. According to French media, the transfer paid to ex-club Rennes is believed to be at least 30 million euros ($35 million). "Nottingham Forest is delighted to announce the signing of Arnaud Kalimuendo, who joins the club on a five-year deal," read a statement on the English club's website. The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Paris Saint-Germain, before enjoying a breakthrough season at Ligue 1 side Rennes last year when he netted 18 times in 34 appearances in all competitions. Prior to joining Rennes in 2022, he made five appearances for PSG and enjoyed success during loan spells at Lens -- scoring 21 goals in 65 outings. "When I heard about the interest from Forest, I was honoured. This is a proud moment for me, joining a team who had a strong season last year and a club with great history," said Kalimuendo. "I'm ready for the challenge, and I arrive here with good experience. I had a good season last year with goals and assists but I want more and want to reach a new level here." Two-time European champions Nottingham Forest finished the 2024/25 season in seventh place after surprisingly spending much of the season in the Premier League's top three. Before the start of the new campaign, manager Nuno Espirito Santo endured a disappointing pre-season -- no wins and only one goal scored in seven matches -- and a disappointing transfer window. However, Forest kickstarted the season with a comfortable 3-1 win over Brentford on Sunday and new signings have begun arriving at the City Ground. The recent additions of winger Dan Ndoye, playmaker Omari Hutchinson and ex-Manchester City midfielder James McAtee have bolstered Nuno's squad. "It's been a busy few days for us — the culmination of a lot of hard work from our staff over a number of weeks," said Forest chief football officer Ross Wilson. jta/cyj/nf/mw
