East Kilbride Rugby Club coach praises 'outstanding' star as he scoops two awards
Loose-head prop Alistair Marriott won big at the club's annual awards
East Kilbride Rugby Club head coach Franklin Clark heaped praise on player of the year Alistair Marriott after the loose-head prop claimed two prizes at their annual awards night.
Marriott won Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year in a season where the club reached the National Shield final and finished fifth in West Region One.
Clark said: 'Ally has been absolutely outstanding in just about every game he has played. Everything you would want out of a guy as a rugby player, he brings it.
"He does everything he is asked to do, he carries hard, he tackles hard and encourages all the other players.
'He is a model team-mate and player, so he thoroughly deserves both of his awards.'
There were plenty of other awards handed out on the night, as scrum half Justin Ludick won Young Player of the Year after a fine first season since moving from South Africa to study.
Clark said: 'Justin has had a great season. He is only a young kid who has come to Scotland this past year to study. He has fitted in really well and become an integral part of the team, so he has been really good.
'It has got to have been difficult for him, coming to a different country and trying to fit into a new team when he doesn't know anybody.
'He says he will stick around next season after he goes back home in the summer to see his family.'
Most Improved Player went to Craig McKenzie and Clark said: 'Craig has just done everything asked of him. He is quite a good organiser in defence.'
There was a joint award in the category of Top Try Scorer with Evan Martin and Ross McKeown sharing the prize, while Rory Blackwood won the Top Points award.
Clark said: 'Both Evan and Ross have had great seasons. Evan probably would have scored more tries but he got injured. He got injured in the Shield semi-final and missed the final.
"He only came back in our last game and he was determined to get two tries to finish top scorer, but he only managed the one.
'Ross has been immense. I think he has scored a try in just about every game he has played this season. He is full of heart and running, a great ball carrier, and just what we were needing this season.'
Meanwhile, it was announced that Mark Ellison has decided to hang up his boots after 15 years and 200 appearances with the club, which included winning promotion to National League Three and captaining the side to their 2019 West Shield victory.
He was presented with a special 200th cap to make the milestone and it was presented by Robert MacKinnon, who has been made honorary vice president for life following 23 years of service.

Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes receives transfer message from Portugal team-mate
Ruben Neves says he would welcome Portugal team-mate Bruno Fernandes at Al-Hilal with open arms this summer. Fernandes was once again United's shining light across an otherwise wretched season, with the 30-year-old notching 19 goals and 20 assists in his 57 appearances for the club. Though it is unlikely to provide much consolation, Fernandes went on to win the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award by a landslide, despite captaining the club to their lowest-ever points total in the Premier League. Speculation has been mounting that Fernandes could be set for a change of scenery after five-and-a-half years at Old Trafford, despite Ruben Amorim repeatedly underlining his fellow countryman's importance to his project. Widespread reports claim Al-Hilal are looking to wrap up a stunning deal for Fernandes before their Club World Cup campaign gets underway in a fortnight's time. The Saudi Pro League outfit are believed to be readying a £100million bid for Fernandes and have intimated they would be prepared to triple the Portuguese's current salary at the Theatre of Dreams. 'I recommend all the players in the national team, of course,' Neves, formerly of Wolves, said when asked about the prospect of Fernandes joining him at Al-Hilal. 'Fortunately, Portugal have produced a lot of talent and continues to do so. We are a lucky country in that respect. We are also very hard-working. A very small country, but one that has produced excellent players. 'Just yesterday we saw four of our players – Goncalo Ramos, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes and Vitinha – lift the Champions League. It is an excellent sign for Portugal. 'I would like to have any player from the national team in my side.' And while Fernandes is yet to provide any assurances over his future, Amorim remains hopeful that his compatriot will not have his head turned by the extraordinary riches on offer in Saudi Arabia. 'I think he wants to stay,' Amorim told reporters during United's post-season tour of Asia. 'He's really young, he's really good and he needs to be in the best league in the world. 'Of course, I'm the manager, I'm the coach, but sometimes it is the decision of the player. More Trending 'I talk with him and I explain things and I just have that feeling: when you talk to someone you have that feeling that they want to stay. 'Sometimes, in a lot of games this season, he was frustrated, but he knows what we are doing, so the feeling that I have every time I speak with him is that he wants to continue, for sure, with Manchester United, but you never know.' Asked whether United can afford to turn down the money that Al-Hilal are willing to pay for Fernandes, Amorim replied: 'Yes, we can find another way to earn money.' Fernandes' current contract with the Red Devils runs through to June 2027. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Emotions ran high in the away dressing room at Loftus Versfeld as a number of players came to terms with the end of their Edinburgh careers. The 42-33 loss to the Bulls in the quarter-finals of the United Rugby Championship brought the curtain down on the season for Sean Everitt's side and several long-serving stalwarts will now move on. 'It's a very emotional changing room at the moment,' said Sean Everitt, the Edinburgh head coach who took the club into the URC play-offs for the first time in three years. 'We've got five leavers that are sitting in the changing room absolutely gutted. A lot of effort went into this game and the preparation was really good for us. The travel was good. Unfortunately, we just fell short. But yes, very emotional. 'Ali Price has come to work every day since he's joined Edinburgh with a smile on his face, which is really contagious amongst the team and he certainly brought a lot to the table. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'You look at a guy like Jamie Ritchie that's been at the club for 11 seasons. He's been really outstanding since I've been there for the last two years. One of the standout players, Player of the Year last year and was also a nominee for Player of the Year this year. We will miss him. His competitive edge and leadership is something that we will miss and we wish him well going forward. And then there's obviously guys like Javan, Mark and Robin Hislop as well. 'Robin, although he hasn't played much this year, he's been an anchor within the squad, not always available for selection due to injury. And when he came back from injury, he didn't probably get the game time that he wanted. But a guy that carries himself well around the group when things don't go his way, always positive, training to the best of his ability. We miss people like that because it's a good example to our youngsters. Ali Price of Edinburgh kicks clear during the United Rugby Championship quarter-final against the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld. | Getty Images 'I think the positive of it all is that Jamie and Ali have got good opportunities in the south of France and they'll enjoy their environment change. It's not the end of their careers. Sometimes a change in environment is good for an individual. It takes them out of their comfort zone. And if possible, we'd welcome them back in Edinburgh, if we can.' Ritchie has agreed a deal to join Perpignan for next season while Price has been heavily linked with a move to Montpellier. In addition, Dave Cherry, Matt Scott, Jamie Hodgson, Emiliano Boffelli, Jake Henry, Nathan Sweeney and Jack Hocking are all also leaving Edinburgh. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Everitt said he was proud of the way his team performed at Loftus Versfeld against last season's URC finalists, and in particular the start they made. 'We knew that the first 20 minutes were going to be vital and I thought that the players reacted very well to that. We wanted a fast start to counteract what the Bulls do to the opposition when they come to Loftus and we certainly got the start that we wanted. 'But then there were a couple of loose kicks, which does happen in rugby, and the Bulls were outstanding in how they cut us there on counter-attack. 'And then they blitzed us in the second half and we conceded three tries in 13 minutes. But the boys fought until the end and did well to come back to within nine points. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I think if you look at the penalty near the end, we went for the corner and maybe, if we had got three points there, then the pressure turns on the opposition because you're then within a score. So, I'm proud of the fight that the guys showed.

Lennon Miller can be a Euro star like Scott McTominay, says Motherwell defender
Stephen O'Donnell reckons Miller can play at the highest level Motherwell vice-captain Stephen O'Donnell says Lennon Miller can be a top star in Europe – but would be delighted to see him remain at Fir Park next season. Right-back O'Donnell has watched Scots like Scott McTominay and Lewis Ferguson tear it up in Italy, and has no doubt that Miller could follow in those footsteps. The 18-year-old is expected to be in high demand this summer, with the Fir Park club anticipating a huge fee, and O'Donnell reckons his team-mate could become a superstar. He said: 'No-one would have said Scott McTominay would become such a talisman for Napoli, but what I would say is that some players have surprised me by going and doing so well, others haven't. 'I don't think Lennon would surprise me if he went and did well anywhere. 'I think he has a temperament, a natural ability, and if a team wants to get on the ball, I don't think there will be many better players at his age around the world at getting on the ball and trying to create stuff from deeper positions. 'I am excited to see what the future holds for him. If it's not Motherwell, I wouldn't be surprised if he went away abroad and kicked on to another level. 'Lennon is a character, he's professional, he's always fit, though he had a wee blip through the season. 'He's always training and training well, and his ability is there for everyone to see, winning the sports writers and the Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year awards. 'He's a talent, and one that we're lucky to have. If he goes, he goes with everyone's blessing, and I just hope that his career goes in a direction that I and we all think it will go. 'He's a very talented boy, a really good guy, and a very good team-mate, which is the most important thing, and I'm sure he'll do great, wherever he goes.' O'Donnell reckons there are others at Fir Park that could attract attention over the summer, providing a win-win situation for the club. He said: 'There are lots of players under contract, but the ones that have done well, we can command a fee for, the likes of Callum Slattery and Lennon Miller, and you wouldn't be surprised if anyone came in for these guys, because they're very good players. 'That puts the club in a good position, and if that was to happen for one of both – or anyone – it's good for the club. 'If they're here at the start of the season, that's good for the club as well.'
