ESPN NFL survey is latest illustration that Iowa football is TEU
The flow of tight ends to wear black and gold only to find success at the next level is as good as it has ever been right now, and the proof comes from a recent NFL survey, which saw Iowa dominate tight end rankings.
In a survey from ESPN that polled NFL executives, coaches, and scouts, three former Iowa tight ends appear on the list for the top 10 tight ends in the league. Coming in at No. 2 on the list is one of Iowa's favorite sons, George Kittle.
The San Francisco 49ers star tight end has proven that he has both the ability to block and catch, plus the longevity factor of continuing his high level of play for so long.
Kittle is aging well. He's coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons with a combined 14 touchdowns during that two-year span. Fifty of his 78 catches last season went for a first down. His premier blocking remains unmatched, and he's still tough to bring down, leading all tight ends with 14.2 yards per catch.
Kittle and quarterback Brock Purdy signed massive contract extensions in tandem this offseason, so they have several years to build upon their chemistry. Kittle caught 83% of Purdy's targets last year.
"He's shown that when he's healthy he's the most complete player at the position," an AFC scout said. "Durability is the only thing that's really affected that. He embodies San Francisco's culture and that's why they keep paying him." - Jeremy Fowler, ESPN
Right on Kittle's heels is a younger tight end talent who has taken over the league and continues to take defenses by storm. At No. 3 of the best tight ends in the NFL is the Detroit Lions' budding star, Sam LaPorta. After bursting onto the scene in his rookie year, his sophomore NFL season saw some bumps that slowed him down but showed no signs of having a lasting effect on his output and production.
LaPorta's production dipped in Year 2, when he finished with 60 catches for 726 yards and seven scores. He fought through a knee issue -- a hyperextension and bone bruise -- that slowed momentum.
But he's every bit as valuable as he was in 2023, and Detroit had several additional playmakers for whom to find targets. LaPorta is considered a complete tight end with elite feet, niftiness in the red zone and strength to compete every play.
"[Lack of production is] not really a factor because Detroit has so many players they need to get the ball to," an NFC executive said. "He's a stud. Will be a cornerstone player for a long time." - Jeremy Fowler, ESPN
Rounding out the trio of Hawkeye tight ends dominating in the NFL is the Minnesota Vikings' star tight end T.J. Hockenson. After recovering from injuries, Hockenson has responded without missing a beat. He gained more confidence last year, and it showed with his production down the stretch.
Hockenson's status within the Vikings' offense was growing before a torn ACL and MCL suffered on a late hit in Week 16 of 2023 stalled that progress. Up to that point, Hockenson's 95 receptions were the 18th most in NFL history among tight ends.
Returning close to midseason last year, Hockenson still produced three games of at least 68 yards from November to December. But, overall, he wasn't quite at full tilt.
"He was OK -- didn't appear to trust the knee, especially in blocking, which is common for that injury," an NFL coordinator said. "But I expect him to have a strong year. He will trust it more a year removed and that offense is set up nicely for him. And he's got such a good feel for the game that he'll find ways to get catches." - Jeremy Fowler, ESPN
With Iowa owning the tight end position in the NFL, they are the standalone owners of "TEU" with their proven successes. Up next, Addison Ostrenga gets his chance to be the main tight end for the Hawkeyes in an offense that should see some more wrinkles and targets with new QB Mark Gronowski and second-year offensive coordinator Tim Lester.

Bears Witnessing Shocking Development At Left Tackle Spot
The Bears knew they had to improve the offensive line this offseason after Caleb Williams got sacked a league-high 68 times in 2024. As a result, the team made several moves, including letting Teven Jenkins leave in free agency while adding Joe Thuney, Drew Dalman, and Jonah Jackson to start at the interior spots. At right tackle, former first-round pick Darnell Wright remains entrenched, but the left tackle spot is up for grabs. Braxton Jones started at that spot in 2024 and delivered mixed results. Jones earned a solid Pro Football Focus grade, but was penalized seven times and allowed five sacks. As a result, the team is holding an open competition at the spot, and several guys are in the mix. 2025 second-round pick Ozzy Trapilo has seen some first-team snaps, and many were expected 2024 third-rounder Kiran Amegadjie to factor in as well, but that hasn't really happened due to Amegadjie having some injury issues this summer. Instead, a surprising player has recently been getting some starter snaps at left tackle- Theo Benedet. The Canadian offensive lineman has been a star of camp, and rotated with the starters on Wednesday with Jones. Trapilo, meanwhile, was at right tackle with the second-string offense. Offensive line coach Dan Roushar offered a glowing review of Benedet's work. 'There's a lot of things to really like about Theo. He's had probably as much improvement as any player we have in the group,' said Roushar. 'With that, there's a lot of things for him to improve on and he knows that and we've gotta work on it. He is working his tail off. He has put himself in a position to go compete for a job somewhere in this group.' Jones should still be viewed as the favorite to start due to how raw Benedet is. However, Benedet is now the favorite to land the backup left tackle spot, while Trapilo should be the backup right tackle. As a result, Amegadjie could find himself on the chopping block soon unless he quickly gets healthy and regains favor. Bears offensive coordinator defends Caleb Williams amid recent criticism
Caleb Williams is entering a pivotal second season with the Chicago Bears. The 2024 No.1 overall pick had an underwhelming rookie campaign, but is in a better situation this year with Ben Johnson at head coach. With Williams under a lot of pressure heading into 2025, fans and media are watching his every move. For instance, the USC product received some criticism from multiple national media members for not playing in Chicago's preseason opener versus the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. 'My take is everybody but Tom Brady played this weekend and Caleb Williams didn't,' FOX Sports' Colin Cowherd said of Williams not playing in the preseason. 'He's not quite there. We're asking him to do stuff under center, and it was strategic in not playing him. ' Williams has also caught some heat due to a viral video of him struggling in a drill at practice, which caused him to get frustrated with himself. Though Williams has a lot of doubters and adversity to face this year, his offensive coordinator still has confidence in him. First-year Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle defended his quarterback during a recent interview and praised him for his work ethic. 'He [Williams] works at. He works at it really hard,' Doyle said on the NFL Spotlight With Ari Meirov. 'It's important to him, and I've seen him progress from spring to right now. He's going to continue to progress as he continues to stress himself and grow.' 'He's very attentive in media roomings. He wants to get it right. He wants to be a great quarterback.' It's great to hear Doyle defending Williams and instilling a vote of confidence in his young quarterback. Doyle served as the tight ends coach of the Denver Broncos in 2023 and 2024, so he was around quarterback Bo Nix during his spectacular rookie season in 2024. If Williams can continue and progress, he'll take a step in the right direction in 2025. The 23-year-old has all the talent and tools necessary to be a franchise quarterback, and just needs to block out the noise. Caleb Williams, Bears starters set to make preseason debuts vs. Bills
The Chicago Bears will host a joint practice with the Buffalo Bills on Friday, and both teams will cap off the week with a preseason game at Soldier Field. Chicago's starters, including quarterback Caleb Williams, didn't play in the preseason opener last week versus the Miami Dolphins. However, head coach Ben Johnson announced on Wednesday that the starters will be out there against Buffalo on Sunday. 'Ben Johnson said that everyone is going to play Sunday vs. Buffalo in the Bears 2nd preseason game,' Courtney Cronin of ESPN said on X. 'That includes Caleb Williams and the starters who sat out last week.' During his press conference, Johnson also added why he is deciding to play Williams versus the Bills after sitting him out last week. 'Well, last week — and really, all through camp — I've been pretty consistent with the thought of reps, reps, reps are the most important thing to get him [Williams] up to speed,' Johnson said on Wednesday. 'And by the plan that we had a week ago, we were able to get him probably somewhere between 80 and 100 more reps than we would've been able to do had he played in the game.' 'This week, it's a different schedule. Different length of time in terms of in between games and all that. And so, our plan right now is the guys that sat out last week, they will be playing this week.' Johnson's decision to sit Williams and the starters last week received some criticism. The first-year head coach now believes that his starters need to play a couple of drives of preseason action to get ready for the season, which doesn't kick off until September 8 versus the Minnesota Vikings.. After working with the Bills this week, Chicago will wrap up the preseason at Arrowhead Stadium against the Kansas City Chiefs.
