Gangster Manjit Mahal's nephew shot dead in Delhi's Bawana; police say fallout of a gang war

Indian Express7 hours ago

A 30-year-old man was killed and his seven-year-old daughter was injured when unidentified men shot at them in Delhi's Bawana area while they were out on a morning walk Friday.
The man has been identified as Deepak, and sources in the Delhi Police said they suspect the shooters could be linked to the gang of Kapil Sangwan, who is also known as Nandu, as the deceased is the nephew of jailed mafia don Manjeet Mahal, the Nandu gang's longtime rival.
According to senior police officers, the shooting took place at around 7.30 am when Deepak was walking with his daughter. Deepak died on the spot, and his daughter sustained injuries to her hand. She has been treated and is out of danger.
Deepak's body has been sent for post-mortem examination, the police said.
Meanwhile, the crime and forensics teams have reached the spot where the shooting took place, and are analysing the bullet shells.
Mahal and London-based Sangwan have been in each other's crosshairs even before he fled to the United Kingdom.
The Delhi Police say the rivalry between the gangs originated out of a money lending dispute in 2015, when Mahal's associate allegedly gunned down Sangwan's brother-in-law over a pending loan. Sangwan then launched a full-scale gang war against Mahal, now jailed, and orchestrated the killing of his father in 2017.
The gang war between the two has claimed a dozen lives over the years, police sources said.
In April 2025, a businessman was murdered in Delhi's Paschim Vihar area, with the Nandu gang claiming responsibility on social media as they suspected he was working for Mahal.
In 2023, Sangwan allegedly ordered the killing of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader for his proximity with Mahal, a police officer said. A red corner notice has also been issued against Sangwan.

Jalandhar grenade attack: NIA searches 3 places in Amroha

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids in Uttar Pradesh's Amroha district on Thursday as part of its investigation into a grenade attack on BJP leader Manrohan Kalia's home in Jalandhar, on April 7, 2025. The raids targeted three individuals close to an Amroha resident, Saidul Ameen, who had already been arrested on April 12. The NIA claimed Ameen was a key accused in the case. For representation only (HT File Photo) This was one among a series of grenade attacks carried out byBabbar Khalsa International (BKI) operatives in Punjab, on the directions of foreign-based handlers of the proscribed terrorist organisation. A local source said that the NIA teams searched the houses of Abdul Hakim, a farmer from Sihali Jagir village, and Nawab, a friend of Saiedul Ameen, a resident of Katra Bakhtwara Singh locality under City Kotwali limits of Amroha. He said Abdul Hakim's two sons Azeem and Jurkhan are employed in Delhi. Besides, the NIA raided one other unknown place in Amroha. He said Ameen also used to do welding work in Delhi for the past few years. He said Ameen was previously arrested, and his mother was questioned by Punjab police in Amroha. He said the NIA investigations revealed that Ameen had transferred several lakh rupees to his mother's account. A senior NIA official confirmed that the NIA is working to uncover Ameen's network spread across three states - Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab - during which they raided 18 locations including three in Amroha, and to identify others involved in the grenade attack. He said the teams seized various incriminating material, including mobiles, digital devices and documents. He said the agency is gathering evidence and building a case against the accused. 'The NIA teams questioned family members of these individuals during raids in Amroha and seized their mobile phones for examination. However, no one was taken into custody, and the individuals were asked to report to the Delhi NIA office on July 3,' confirmed Amroha superintendent of police (SP), Amit Kumar Anand. The NIA searches were at the locations of suspects linked with BKI operative Kulbir Sidhu, US-based gangster Manish alias Kaka Rana, and their nodes based in India and various other countries, a release shared by the NIA read. It further read that Kulbir Sidhu, originally from Yamunanagar in Haryana, is currently in Germany and is a key aide of designated terrorist and BKI chief, Pakistan-based Wadhawa Singh Babbar. Sidhu is also an accused in the NIA case related to the murder of VHP leader Vikas Prabhakar in Nangal, Punjab, in April 2024.

NH-74 scam case: ED seizes Rs 24.70 lakh during searches in Uttarakhand, UP

Dehradun: The Enforcement Directorate seized Rs 24.70 lakh and incriminating documents during simultaneous searches at seven locations in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh in a case linked to a Dehradun-based provincial civil service (PCS) officer in the NH-74 scam case, an official said on Friday. D.P. Singh, a senior PCS officer currently working as Executive Director, Doiwala Sugar Mill in Dehradun, faced the searches on Thursday, said an official statement. The ED said D.P. Singh, the then Special Land Acquisition Officer (SLAO), Uttarakhand, while working in the capacity of Competent Authority of Land Acquisition (CALA), entered into conspiracy with Revenue Officer/Officials, Land Consolidation Officer/Officials, farmers/land owners, middlemen and others for misappropriation of the government funds by manipulating the use of land by way of passing backdated orders. This resulted in payment of higher compensation to landowners at non-agriculture rates, as opposed to the legal and expected compensation, said the ED. To achieve his ulterior motives, he resorted to fabrication/forgery by making back-dated entries in revenue records/documents, which were projected as genuine at the time of distributing compensation to landowners against land acquired for the widening of NH-74 and NH-125. This resulted in a loss of Rs 162.5 crore (approx.) to the government treasury, said the federal probe agency. The ED in this case had already attached movable and immovable properties amounting to Rs 43 crore (approx.) from various accused persons. While the investigation is in progress against these officials and landowners, seven Prosecution Complaints have already been filed before the Special Court (PMLA), Dehradun. Earlier last year, the ED attached immovable properties worth Rs 7.89 crore in the form of land situated at Vallah village in Amritsar district, along with movable properties worth Rs 2.40 crore in connection with a case linked to the scam. The ED had initiated the investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) based on an FIR filed by the police. During the investigation, it was revealed that five brothers -- Ajmer Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Gurvail Singh, Sukhwant Singh and Satnam Singh -- managed to get backdated forged orders and subsequently got them entered in the revenue records on a later date in connivance with the revenue officials and middlemen. Based on this, they fraudulently received excess compensation to the tune of Rs 15.73 crore for their land, which was being acquired for the widening of NH-74 at a non-agricultural rate. The ED investigation revealed that this ill-got money was either utilised for purchasing immovable properties in their names or was transferred to their other bank accounts or bank accounts of their relatives.

China removes senior general, naval chief & top scientist in military

The purge of China's powerful defence and security establishment continued as top military officials, including a senior general, chief of navy and a nuclear scientist, were expelled from the national legislature on Friday. General Miao Hua along with Vice Admiral Li Hanjun, chief of staff of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), and Liu Shipeng, deputy chief engineer of China National Nuclear Corporation, have been removed from the National People's Congress (NPC), the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported. Li is the latest of a string of PLA generals and a handful of defence industry executives to have been implicated in a sweeping crackdown in the military, the Post reported. Both have been stripped of their membership of the legislature, the report said. State-run Xinhua news agency reported that the standing committee of the NPC, which concluded its session here on Friday, also voted to remove top General Miao Hua from his position as a member of the Central Military Commission (CMC), the overall high command of the Chinese military, headed by President Xi Jinping. Miao, the youngest general in the Chinese military hierarchy, has been under probe for serious violations of discipline since November last year. He was dismissed from the NPC in April this year. Miao was also director of the Political Work Department of the CMC, a role critical in managing Communist Party ideology and personnel changes within the People's Liberation Army (PLA). His career advanced significantly after Xi assumed power, leading to roles in the Chinese Navy as a political commissar and eventually becoming the PLA's youngest admiral. The defence ministry said Miao was being investigated for suspected serious violations of discipline, a phrase used as a euphemism for corruption. Since he took over power towards the end of 2012, 72-year-old Xi has carried out massive purges in the country's over two-million-strong military, removing or punishing dozens of senior generals for corruption and indiscipline. Those who were punished included two defence ministers as Xi consolidated his hold on the armed forces and the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC). Xi has repeatedly emphasised the importance of party loyalty among PLA officials to strengthen ideological control and support China's goal of becoming a military superpower. Miao is the second CMC member to be removed from his position since the current leadership took office in 2022.
